To make a phone last longer during a gaming session, start by lowering screen brightness and, where the game and device allow it, reducing frame rate or refresh rate. To limit cellular use, play over strong Wi-Fi and check your phone’s per-app data totals after a typical session. Battery Saver and Data Saver can help with some system and background activity, but neither guarantees lower power or data use for every game.
Which settings make the biggest difference?
Start with changes that directly reduce display workload, then use connectivity and system power settings to address the conditions around the game.

- Dim the screen. A bright display adds power demand. Apple recommends reducing brightness as a battery-saving measure: Apple’s battery guidance.
- Lower frame rate or refresh rate if available. Android Developers recommends lower refresh-rate targets, such as 30 Hz or 60 Hz, and frame pacing for supported games. Lower settings can make animation less smooth or controls feel less responsive, so choose based on whether battery life or performance matters more in that game: Android Developers’ Game Mode API guidance.
- Use Wi-Fi with a strong signal. Google and Apple recommend Wi-Fi rather than mobile data when available; Apple notes that weak signal can affect battery life. Wi-Fi shifts game traffic off your cellular allowance, but it does not make an online game offline or stop its internet use: Google Android battery guidance and Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance.
- Try your phone’s power-saving mode. Battery Saver on Android and Low Power Mode on iPhone reduce selected system activity or features. Effects vary, so check that the game still runs smoothly and stays connected.
How to reduce battery drain on Android
Lower the game and display workload
In the game’s settings, look for frame-rate, graphics-quality, or performance options. If your phone offers a refresh-rate setting, a lower rate may also help. The Android Developers recommendations apply to supported devices and games; there is no universal battery switch that every Android player can use. Graphics-heavy and highly interactive games can be demanding, but games do not all drain power equally. Google Pixel Phone Help lists playing graphics-heavy games among activities to avoid when trying to stretch a low battery: Google Pixel Phone Help.

Android Battery Saver can reduce background activity and other selected functions. On Pixel phones, Google also offers Extreme Battery Saver. The exact options and menus depend on the phone maker, Android version, and device; Google’s Pixel directions are examples rather than universal Android steps. A power-saving mode may change how some functions behave, so confirm the game remains playable and online.

Restrict background mobile data with Data Saver
On Android 7.0 and later, Data Saver can restrict apps’ background communication over mobile data. Android.com documents this Pixel-oriented path: Settings → Network & Internet → Data Saver. Menu labels can differ on other Android phones. Some apps can be allowed “Unrestricted data” if they need it. Data Saver reduces, but does not completely stop, data transmission; it should not be treated as a way to eliminate an online game’s active traffic: Android.com’s Data Saver guide.
Be careful with Airplane Mode
Airplane Mode disables mobile service and can disconnect an online game. On Pixel, Wi-Fi can be turned back on while Airplane Mode is active, but this only works for games that can use Wi-Fi or play offline, and you will not have cellular service. Do not use it if you need mobile connectivity: Google Pixel Phone Help.

How to reduce battery drain on iPhone
Dim the screen and use a reliable Wi-Fi connection
Apple recommends dimming the display and using Wi-Fi when accessing data. A weak mobile or Wi-Fi signal can also contribute to battery use, so improving signal conditions may help. Wi-Fi can protect your cellular allowance, but an online game still sends and receives data.
Use Low Power Mode as a system-level measure
Low Power Mode reduces or disables selected features, including Mail fetch, Background App Refresh, and some visual effects. It may reduce activity around a gaming session, but Apple does not promise a particular game will use less power or run at a specific frame rate. Test the game with the mode on before relying on it.

Check what is actually draining the battery
Open Settings → Battery to review the daily usage chart and app or system activity. Apple identifies background activity and no or low mobile coverage as possible usage types. Use those clues to decide whether to change an app or connectivity setting rather than switching off unrelated features: Apple’s battery troubleshooting guidance.
On listed supported iPhone models, 5G Auto can switch to LTE when 5G would not provide a noticeably better experience. Availability depends on model and software, so this is not a universal instruction to manually change network settings for gaming.

How much data does mobile gaming use?
There is no reliable universal data-per-hour figure in the official sources cited here. Actual use depends on the game and its features, and a single session may not represent another game or play style. Wi-Fi avoids charging that traffic to your cellular allowance, but it does not reduce the amount of internet communication the game requires.
- Check the game’s own settings or support information for any mobile-data controls or usage details.
- Record the game’s cellular-data total in your phone’s per-app usage screen.
- Play a representative session using your usual settings and connection.
- Check the app’s total again and compare the change with the session length. Repeat if the session was unusual, such as a large update or download.
Phone menus and the period used for data totals vary. Treat your own measured session as a guide for that game and setup, not a universal rate.

Choose settings by what you are trying to improve
| Change | Main benefit | Trade-off or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Lower brightness | Less display power demand | The screen may be harder to see in bright surroundings. |
| Lower frame rate or refresh rate | Can reduce display and game workload on supported devices | May reduce smoothness or responsiveness; options depend on the game and device. |
| Wi-Fi with a strong signal | Uses Wi-Fi instead of cellular data for game traffic and can help battery life compared with mobile data | The game still uses internet data; a weak connection can still affect the experience. |
| Battery Saver or Low Power Mode | Reduces selected system activity or features | Effects vary and may affect functions or the game experience. |
| Android Data Saver | Restricts background mobile-data communication for apps | Does not guarantee less foreground game traffic or stop all data transmission. |
Adjust only what your game needs
For a casual game, a lower frame rate and power-saving mode may be an acceptable exchange for longer play. In a competitive game where response and smoothness matter, keep the performance settings you need and focus instead on brightness, strong Wi-Fi, and measuring cellular use. There is no single best configuration across all games and phones.
