The safe way to move an Ultima save is to identify the exact game and release first, then copy the save data used by that installation. Original DOS releases, DOSBox packages, and community engines can use different folders and formats, so there is no single save path for the whole series. Exit the game, make an untouched backup, transfer the documented save files or folder, and keep the original until the destination loads the intended character.
This guide separates three tasks that are often confused: preserving a backup, moving a save to another computer, and importing a character into a different Ultima title. The first two are usually file-management jobs. The third is a game feature that may not exist.

Start by identifying the exact Ultima release
Before opening folders, write down four details:
- Title: for example, Ultima IV, Ultima V, Ultima VI, Ultima VII, Serpent Isle, or Ultima Underworld.
- Platform and operating system: the original DOS computer, another classic computer platform, Windows, macOS, Linux, or a handheld.
- Release source: original disks, a modern storefront package, a compilation, or a separately installed community engine.
- Runtime or port: a DOSBox configuration, Exult, or another engine that may redirect or convert save data.
These details determine what you should copy. A save from an original DOS directory is not automatically stored in the same place as a storefront installation, and an engine such as Exult can maintain its own save structure. The Ultima Codex saved-games index separates original examples from Exult examples for Ultima VII and Serpent Isle, illustrating why a game number alone is not enough to identify a path.
Why a hard-coded series-wide path is unsafe
Classic games predate the per-user save folders used by many modern Windows applications. Some wrote files beside the executable; others used a launcher-defined working directory or an engine-specific data folder. A compatibility layer can also expose a virtual DOS drive whose files live somewhere else on the host computer. If you copy a plausible-looking folder without confirming the release, the game may show no saves, load an older state, or overwrite the wrong installation.

Use the table as a decision aid, not as permission to copy every file with a similar name. Confirm the installed version and inspect its own documentation or launcher settings before moving anything.
Find where your installed game writes saves
Use the least destructive method available: first check the release documentation or launcher, then inspect the actual game directory. Do not begin by deleting, renaming, or replacing files.
For a classic or DOSBox installation
- Open the folder that contains the game’s launcher or executable.
- Look for files with the extension documented for that release. In the 2011 GOG forum example for Ultima IV, the relevant pattern is
*.SAV. - If the game runs in DOSBox, identify the host folder mapped to the DOS drive. The files visible inside DOSBox are stored in that mapped host directory, not in an abstract DOS-only location.
- Check the launcher or configuration for a different working directory before assuming the executable’s folder is the save location.
- Create a test save with a distinctive name, exit normally, and note which file or folder receives a new timestamp. This confirms the active location without guessing from similarly named directories.
The test-save method is useful when a computer contains both an old standalone copy and a newer compilation. Make the test in the copy you intend to transfer, not in a folder that might belong to another installation.

For a community engine or source port
Read the engine’s documentation for its save directory and version. Engines can preserve the original game’s rules while changing where saves are stored and how they are named. The Ultima Codex index’s separate original and Exult sections are a reminder that a file copied from one implementation may not be recognized by another. If the engine offers an in-game “open saves folder” command, use that rather than searching the entire disk.
For an unknown or very old computer
Search only after closing the game and making a disk image or other safety copy if the data is irreplaceable. Search for the documented extension, such as .SAV, within the installation or mounted game volume. Sort results by modification time and compare them with a newly created test save. Avoid moving similarly named files from unrelated games until the test identifies the active directory.
Make a dependable manual backup
A backup is a preserved copy that you can return to; it is not merely a second shortcut to the same folder. Use this procedure whenever the exact release documentation identifies the save files or directory.

- Exit the game completely. Do not copy while a save is being written. If a DOSBox window remains open, close the game and then close DOSBox after the program has returned to its prompt or launcher.
- Copy the documented save data as a unit. Copy the entire save folder when the release uses one. If the instructions identify individual files, copy all related files rather than selecting only the file with the newest timestamp.
- Store the copy somewhere separate. Use another local folder, an external disk, or a removable drive. A generic USB flash drive is optional; it is not a title-specific requirement.
- Preserve context. Add a text note containing the game title, release source, operating system, engine or DOSBox version if known, and the date of the copy. This prevents a valid save from being mistaken for one from a different installation later.
- Keep the original untouched. Do not rename or delete it until a second copy has been opened successfully.
For long-term preservation, make more than one copy in different locations. A backup on the same failing hard drive protects against accidental deletion but not against drive failure. If the save is important, periodically open a copy in the same release that created it; merely seeing a file in a folder does not prove that it is readable.

Transfer a save to another computer
Moving to a new computer is safest when the destination uses the same title, release, and runtime as the source. Matching those three variables removes most compatibility surprises.
- Install and launch the destination release once. Start a new game or reach its main menu, then exit. This lets the installer create its expected folders and configuration.
- Locate the destination’s active save directory. Use the release documentation, launcher settings, or a test save. Do not assume it matches the source path; a different operating system or storefront can relocate it.
- Back up any destination saves. Copy the existing destination folder to a separate location before replacing files. This gives you a way back if the transferred data is incompatible.
- Copy the source save data into the destination location. Preserve filenames and extensions. If the release uses a folder hierarchy, retain that hierarchy instead of flattening files into one directory.
- Start the destination and verify the result. Check that the expected save names, party, location, and inventory appear. Load the save and play long enough to confirm that it can move, rest, or otherwise write a new state.
- Retain the source backup. Keep it until the transferred save has been tested and you are certain no newer destination progress was overwritten.
If the destination shows no saves
- Recheck the title and release. A save from Ultima IV is not a save for Ultima V, even when both are installed in one compilation.
- Confirm that you copied into the active directory, not merely the folder containing a desktop shortcut or installer.
- Check filename case, extension, and folder nesting. A renamed file or a missing companion file may be ignored.
- Verify that the destination engine supports the source format. An original save may require the same engine or a documented conversion procedure.
- Restore the destination backup before trying another experiment. Never use repeated replacement attempts as a substitute for keeping an untouched copy.
If the save appears but fails to load
- Return to the original release and test the backup there. If it fails in the source installation, the file may already be damaged.
- Compare the runtime and game data on both computers. Different patches, expansions, or engine versions can change compatibility.
- Try a second copy from the source rather than repeatedly editing the first transferred file.
- Do not open and resave the only copy in a conversion tool unless that tool’s documentation explains how to preserve the original format.
Using storefront cloud synchronization
Cloud synchronization can reduce manual copying, but it is a release feature rather than a property of the Ultima series. The GOG Ultima 4+5+6 listing describes those games as DOSBox-powered and reports verified cloud-save support for that product. Check the current listing and the installed release before relying on synchronization.

What cloud sync can and cannot do
- It can copy the files that the storefront has configured for synchronization between supported installations.
- It may not include saves created by a separately installed engine, a modified DOSBox configuration, or a different storefront build.
- It can propagate an accidental deletion or an older state. A manual backup remains valuable before changing computers or resolving a sync conflict.
- It does not convert one game’s save format into another game’s format and does not create cross-title character import.
When moving between computers, allow the first installation to finish synchronizing before launching the game, then verify the in-game save list. If the service reports a conflict, preserve both versions locally before choosing which one to keep.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Backup copying is not character transfer
Copying a save preserves progress in the same game. Character transfer means that one title reads a character or party created by another title and converts it into a new game’s format. These are separate features and require separate documentation.

The Origin Systems Ultima Underworld I & II manual states: “Note that you cannot translate a UW1 character into UW2, or vice versa.” Treat that as a direct limitation: a backup of a UW1 save is useful for restoring UW1, but it is not an import file for UW2. The manual also says that each game permits up to four saved games at once. Its statement that a save can occupy up to 500K of hard-disk space describes the original DOS context, not the storage needed by a modern computer.

Other numbered games and ports
Do not infer a transfer rule from Underworld or from a forum post about Ultima IV. Some releases may offer a sequenced-game import, while others may not; community engines can add or remove conversion support. Look for an explicit “import,” “translate,” or “carry over” feature in the manual for both the source and destination title. If the documentation only discusses saving and loading, assume that ordinary file copying is a backup operation, not a character conversion.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
| Mistake | Why it causes trouble | Safer approach |
|---|---|---|
| Copying a path found in an old forum post without checking the installation | Installers, operating systems, and storefront builds change folder locations. | Use the post only as a clue, then confirm with a test save in the current installation. |
| Copying while the game is open | The latest save may not have been flushed to disk, or a partially written file may be copied. | Exit the game before copying. |
| Replacing destination files without a safety copy | Existing progress can be permanently overwritten. | Back up the destination save folder first. |
| Mixing original and engine-specific saves | The destination may not recognize the format or may silently ignore it. | Match the source and destination implementation, or follow a documented conversion process. |
| Assuming cloud sync covers every save | Sync scope is configured per product and may exclude custom engine folders. | Check the product’s current cloud-save description and retain a manual backup. |
| Confusing a copied save with a cross-game import | Most games load only their own save format. | Find explicit title-specific translation instructions; otherwise restore the save in its original game. |
A repeatable preservation workflow
Use this checklist whenever you acquire an old hard drive, reinstall a classic game, or move to a new computer:
- Record the exact title, edition, storefront or media source, platform, and engine.
- Launch the intended installation and create a clearly named test save.
- Exit fully and identify the file or folder whose timestamp changed.
- Copy that save data to a separate backup location.
- Add a note describing the release and date.
- On the destination, launch once to create its folder structure and back up any existing saves.
- Copy the source data without changing names or hierarchy.
- Load the transferred save and create a new test save.
- Keep the original backup until the new save has been verified.
- Treat any request to move a character into another Ultima title as a separate compatibility question.
This workflow accommodates the evidence available for classic Ultima releases without pretending that one filename, one directory, or one cloud service applies to the entire franchise.
