To download an XML file that is already linked on a webpage, right-click the link, choose Save Link As (or your browser’s equivalent), select a folder, and save it. If clicking the link opens XML in the browser instead, change the browser’s download action or use the link’s save option. Exporting XML from Excel is a separate task: it creates an XML file from worksheet data.
Download an XML file linked on a webpage
- Find the link to the XML file.
- Right-click the link, or use the equivalent context action on your device.
- Choose Save Link As in Chrome, or the browser’s equivalent save-link command. - Select a folder and save the file. If the website supplies the name with an
.xmlextension, keep that extension.

If Firefox opens the XML instead of saving it
Firefox can display XML internally or save it, depending on the action configured for that content type. Open Settings > General, then find Applications or Files and applications. Locate the XML content type and choose Save File or Always ask. The section label can vary with the Firefox version. Mozilla’s guide to file types and download actions

If XML handling remains unexpected, the website may be sending an incorrect content type, which can affect the browser’s behavior.

If the XML page looks blank or difficult to read
A blank-looking display or a dense, unformatted block does not necessarily mean the file is unavailable. NASA’s Planetary Data System recommends trying the browser’s View Source option. For validation, schema-aware work, or a clearer document-tree view, use an XML-aware editor; that is for inspecting the file, not a requirement for downloading it. Export XML from Excel instead of downloading an existing file
If your goal is to turn worksheet data into XML, use Excel’s XML Map export rather than a browser download. Microsoft lists support for Excel for Microsoft 365, Excel 2024, 2021, 2019, and 2016. The workflow requires worksheet data mapped to an XML schema:

- Open the workbook and select Developer > Export.
- If prompted, choose the XML map to export.
- Enter a filename and click Export.
Microsoft’s documented XML Map export limit is 65,536 rows. Larger exports may require dividing the data or using a different approach. Export can also fail or omit data when the schema uses unsupported structures, mixed content, or required elements that have not been mapped. Microsoft’s Excel XML export instructions
