How to Save an HTML Page With Images and CSS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To save one page with its pictures and styling for offline use in Firefox desktop, choose Save Page As, select Web page, complete, and keep the resulting HTML file beside its companion resource folder. Open that file with your network disconnected and check the images, fonts and layout. The Web page, HTML only option creates one HTML file but does not save pictures.

A saved page is a copy of what the browser could retrieve. It is not automatically a complete backup of JavaScript applications, live data, forms or resources generated only after scripts run. The method below tells you what is captured, how to repair common omissions, and when a site mirror or rendered screenshot is a better fit.

Save a page with images and CSS in Firefox

  1. Open the page you want to keep in Firefox desktop.
  2. Open the browser menu and choose Save Page As (Firefox documentation also calls this Save Page).
  3. Choose a local destination and enter a filename.
  4. In the format selector, choose Web page, complete.
  5. Save the file. Firefox creates the HTML document and a companion directory containing pictures and other resources needed to display it.
  6. Do not separate the two items when you move or share the copy. Open the HTML file while offline and inspect the parts that matter.

Mozilla describes this format as saving “the whole web page along with pictures.” It also warns that the original HTML link structure may not be preserved. The official Firefox help page was updated on 2023-08-11: Mozilla’s save-a-web-page instructions.

Choose the right Firefox format

Need Firefox choice What you receive Important trade-off
Read one page offline with its pictures and styling Web page, complete An HTML file plus a companion directory for pictures and other display resources Keep both together; link structure can change
Keep only the page’s markup and text Web page, HTML only One HTML file Pictures are not saved
Retrieve one image, stylesheet or script Page Info > Media Individual elements selected from the page You must identify and save each needed resource

The HTML-only option is not a smaller version of a complete archive: it deliberately omits images. If you need a particular asset rather than a whole page, open Firefox’s Page Info window and use its Media panel. Mozilla documents that panel for saving images, scripts and stylesheets: Firefox Page Info guidance.

Check the saved copy before you rely on it

Test without a network

Close the original tab, disconnect Wi-Fi or unplug the network, then open the saved HTML file. Scroll through the page and check the images, background images, fonts, tables and print layout you actually need. A page can look correct while online because the browser is silently downloading a missing resource from the original site.

Understand what “complete” does not guarantee

Firefox saves resources it can retrieve for the page, but a rendered page can contain behavior that is not represented by a static HTML copy. Live feeds, login sessions, forms that submit to a server, videos, web sockets and content generated only after JavaScript runs may not work offline. Treat the offline check as the acceptance test rather than assuming that a successful save means every feature was archived.

Keep the pair together when moving it

The companion directory normally sits next to the HTML file. Renaming or moving only the HTML file breaks the relative paths Firefox wrote for images and other assets. Zip the file and directory together if you need to send the copy to another computer.

When Firefox misses an image or stylesheet

The asset is loaded only after a script runs

Some pages create image URLs at runtime, lazy-load them after scrolling or fetch them from an API. A save operation may not obtain an address that did not exist in the page’s retrievable resources. Scroll through the original page first, wait for deferred images to appear, and save again. If the page still depends on runtime code, a static offline copy may not be possible with a browser save alone.

The resource is remote or access-controlled

Assets can require a login, a short-lived token, a cookie or a request header. The saved HTML may retain a reference that cannot be used later, especially after you disconnect or leave the site. Sign in before saving when you are authorized, then test offline; do not copy content you do not have permission to access.

CSS is present but the layout is wrong

Inspect the companion directory for stylesheets, fonts and background images. A page can include its visible images while missing a font or CSS background that controls spacing and colors. Page Info > Media can help you save a particular stylesheet or image separately when you know which element is absent. Re-run the offline test after replacing or adding an asset.

Save a whole site for local browsing with HTTrack

Firefox is suited to one page. If you need a browsable local tree of many pages, HTTrack is a free site copier that downloads a site to a local directory, rewrites links for offline navigation, and can resume or update an existing mirror. Its homepage lists version 3.50-4 (2026-09-25); check the project’s current documentation before deploying it: HTTrack Website Copier.

Start with a narrowly scoped capture

  1. Choose a small starting URL and an output directory.
  2. Use HTTrack’s project and connection controls to limit scope and request rate.
  3. Open the resulting local index and test links, images and styles before expanding the crawl.
  4. If required resources live outside the initial host, the command-line guide documents --near for fetching linked non-HTML requisites. Use it cautiously because it can over-fetch an external host.

HTTrack parses HTML and CSS but does not execute JavaScript. If a script constructs an image URL only at runtime, the crawler may never discover that asset. This is the main reason a mirror can be incomplete even when the original page looks perfect in a browser. The command-line guide covers --near, connection limits and rate controls: HTTrack command-line guide.

What single-file mode really means

HTTrack can embed saved stylesheets, scripts, images and fonts as data: URIs. The guide describes a default per-asset ceiling of 10 MB. Assets above that limit, audio and video, and links between pages can remain external. Therefore, “single file” does not mean that every behavior or media type is self-contained. Open the generated file and test it offline.

Chrome and other browsers

Chrome’s official help says to open the browser menu and choose Cast, save, and share > Save page as…, then open the saved file to read it offline. The cited Chrome guidance does not establish the exact format choices available in every Chrome release, so use Firefox when you specifically need the documented Web page, complete versus Web page, HTML only distinction. Troubleshooting checklist

Only text appears; pictures are gone

  • Confirm that you selected Web page, complete, not Web page, HTML only.
  • Check that the companion directory is in the same location as the HTML file and has not been renamed.
  • Reconnect briefly, open the original, scroll until lazy images load, and save again.
  • For one missing element, use Page Info > Media rather than re-saving the entire page.

The page works online but not offline

  • Disconnect the network before opening the saved file; otherwise remote requests can hide the problem.
  • Look for live data, login-dependent resources or JavaScript-generated URLs.
  • If the page is a dynamic application, consider a site mirror only for discoverable HTML/CSS resources; HTTrack does not execute JavaScript.

Links point to unexpected locations

Firefox cautions that the complete-page save may not preserve the original HTML link structure. Use the saved copy primarily for reading and reference, and verify important links against the online page before distributing it.

The mirror downloaded too much

Reduce the starting scope and apply HTTrack’s connection and rate controls. Use --near only when an external host contains a resource the page genuinely needs, because that option can expand the crawl beyond the original host.

Or skip the browser setup

If your goal is a dependable visual record rather than an editable offline HTML archive, ScreenshotNeo renders a URL to PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF through one request. It is not a replacement for Firefox’s HTML-plus-folder copy: the result is a screenshot or PDF, not a directory of source HTML and assets. It is useful when you need the page as it appeared at capture time.

ScreenshotNeo accepts consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether it was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients. Every feature is on every plan: 1,000 shots a month are free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. These examples capture https://stripe.com:

cURL

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' }); const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);

Use a screenshot when visual fidelity, a PDF handoff or an AI-agent workflow matters more than preserving editable markup. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Firefox save the original page URL inside the copy?

The complete-page save can change the original HTML link structure, so treat the local file as a captured copy rather than a guaranteed preservation of every original path.

When should I choose a screenshot instead of an HTML save?

Choose an HTML save when you need local markup and resource files; choose ScreenshotNeo when a rendered PNG, WebP, JPEG or PDF is the deliverable and you do not need editable source files.
