If images are missing in Firefox, first check whether the problem affects one website or every site. Open the same page in another browser or on another device: if images fail there too, the website or its server is probably at fault; if only Firefox is affected, work through site data, extensions, Enhanced Tracking Protection, and security-software checks in that order.
1. Find out whether Firefox is really the cause
Open two or three pages on the affected site, then visit an unrelated image-heavy site. Try the failing URL in another browser, such as Edge, Chrome, or Safari, or on a phone using a different connection.
| What you observe | Most likely direction | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Images fail in Firefox and another browser | Site outage, broken image URLs, server or network problem | Check the site from another connection and contact its operator |
| Images fail only in Firefox | Firefox data, add-on, privacy, or security setting | Continue with the Firefox checks below |
| Only one image or one section is missing | Broken path, permission, lazy-loading, or a blocked third-party resource | Inspect that site’s permissions and protection settings |
| Images appear after a hard reload, then disappear again | Stale cache, cookie state, or an extension modifying pages | Clear the affected site’s data and isolate add-ons |
Mozilla’s image guidance says a failure across browsers generally points to the website, while a Firefox-only failure justifies browser troubleshooting. Record the page URL, the time, and whether text, video, or only images are affected; that information helps the site owner reproduce a server-side problem.
2. Reload once, then clear the affected site’s data
Start with a normal reload. If the page still has empty image boxes, press Ctrl+Shift+R on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+R on macOS, to request fresh page resources.

Next, remove cookies and cached files for the affected site rather than wiping all browsing history. Firefox’s labels vary by release, but the site-specific route is usually:
- Open the problem page.
- Click the padlock or site-information icon at the left of the address bar.
- Choose Clear cookies and site data (or the similarly named option), confirm, and reload.
If that option is not shown, open Settings, search for cookies, and use Cookies and Site Data to manage data for the domain. A broad “clear history” operation can sign you out of unrelated sites, so use it only when site-specific removal does not help. Mozilla’s article Fix problems that cause images to not show documents clearing cookies and temporary cached files as a remedy for some loading failures (last updated April 23, 2023).
3. Test extensions and themes without guessing
Content blockers, privacy extensions, script managers, antivirus browser add-ons, and custom themes can alter page markup or block image hosts. Mozilla’s current broken-website guidance lists extensions and themes among common causes of pages rendering incorrectly.
- Open the Firefox menu, choose Help, then Troubleshoot Mode (in some versions this appears as Help > Troubleshoot Mode).
- Confirm the restart. Troubleshoot Mode temporarily disables extensions and some customizations; it does not delete bookmarks or passwords.
- Open the page that was missing images.
If images return, restart Firefox normally and disable extensions one at a time from Menu > Add-ons and themes > Extensions. Reload after each change until you find the blocker. Re-enable unaffected extensions and update or replace the one that caused the failure. If Troubleshoot Mode does not change the page, extensions are less likely to be responsible.

4. Check Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP)
Firefox can block trackers and related resources that a site uses for image delivery. Mozilla notes that blocked resources can also affect videos, login controls, and payment forms. You can test the setting for one site without weakening protection everywhere.
- With the affected page open, click the shield icon beside the address bar.
- Review the Enhanced Tracking Protection panel and the categories of blocked content.
- Temporarily switch protection off for this site, then reload.
If images appear only when ETP is off, the site likely depends on a resource classified as a tracker. Restore protection if the test does not help. If the site is trustworthy and genuinely needs the resource, use a narrowly scoped compatibility exception rather than a global shutdown. Mozilla explains the exception workflow in Manage Enhanced Tracking Protection exceptions (updated June 25, 2026). The site-permissions interface is described in Site Permissions panel (updated May 18, 2026).
When reporting the issue, tell the site owner which image host is blocked and whether the page works with ETP temporarily disabled. Do not leave protection disabled for every website as a first-line fix.
5. Check antivirus, firewall, and privacy software
Internet-security products can filter image requests independently of Firefox. If site-data cleanup, Troubleshoot Mode, and the ETP test made no difference, inspect the security software installed on the computer or network:

- Ultra-thin bezels: Maximize your viewing experience with thin bezels.
- Look for web-shield, HTTPS scanning, parental-control, ad-blocking, or privacy-filter rules.
- Check whether the image domain is on a blocked list or whether a recent policy update coincided with the failure.
- Test briefly with the relevant web filter paused only if your security product provides a safe, reversible switch; turn it back on immediately after the test.
- On a managed work or school device, ask the administrator rather than changing policy yourself.
If disabling a filter restores images, add a narrowly targeted allow rule for the affected host and keep the rest of the protection enabled. If the problem occurs on several devices behind the same router, test a different network; DNS filtering or a captive portal may be involved.
6. Recognize a website-side image problem
Firefox cannot repair an image that the server does not provide. Mozilla specifically calls out image URLs containing backslashes as a likely path problem in browsers other than Internet Explorer. Garbled content in an image area can indicate a server misconfiguration or an incorrect content type.
Send the site operator:
- the exact page URL and, if visible, the image URL;
- your Firefox version and operating system;
- whether another browser also fails;
- a screenshot of the missing-image area and any console or network error you can copy.
If every browser shows the same missing asset, avoid repeatedly changing Firefox preferences; the site needs to correct its paths, permissions, CDN, or server response.
7. Advanced Firefox recovery (use only after basic tests)
Check the documented image preference
Mozilla’s image article includes a check for browser.display.document_color_use in about:config. Enter about:config in the address bar, accept the warning, search for that exact preference, and confirm it has not been changed from its normal value. Do not alter unrelated preferences. Mozilla warns that Configuration Editor changes can affect stability, security, and performance; record the original value so you can undo a test.

Refresh Firefox
If a clean Troubleshoot Mode session still fails while other browsers work, Mozilla suggests Refresh Firefox. It removes extensions and modified preferences while preserving essential personal data such as bookmarks and passwords, but review the confirmation screen because custom settings are discarded. Export anything important before proceeding.
Create a temporary new profile
A new profile separates damaged settings from your normal profile. Use Firefox’s profile manager to create a test profile, open the same page, and compare results. If images work there, migrate carefully rather than copying the entire old profile at once. Keep the original profile until you have verified that bookmarks, passwords, and extensions are available.
8. A practical decision path
- Scope: compare browsers and devices.
- Low-risk reset: reload, then clear data for only the affected site.
- Isolation: use Troubleshoot Mode and re-enable extensions individually.
- Privacy test: inspect the shield panel and make a site-level ETP test.
- External filters: check antivirus, firewall, DNS, and managed-device policies.
- Escalate: report broken paths or server responses to the website.
- Last resort: verify the documented preference, refresh Firefox, or test a new profile.
This order favors reversible tests before profile or hidden-preference changes. It also distinguishes a one-site compatibility issue from a browser-wide fault without sacrificing privacy protections globally.

If you need a dependable image of a page for documentation or testing rather than a fix inside Firefox, ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server. It accepts a URL and returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Before capture it can accept cookie banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status.
One request is enough:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
See the complete parameter reference and options in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. The service supports full-page captures with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element shots, dark mode, device presets and custom viewports, retina scale, PDF paper and page controls, custom CSS or JavaScript, click and wait actions, blocked requests, headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone, geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed links, asynchronous webhooks, bulk calls for up to 100 URLs, usage reporting, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will clearing Firefox cache delete my bookmarks or saved passwords?
Clearing cookies and cached files for one site normally signs you out of that site but does not remove bookmarks or saved passwords. Review Firefox’s confirmation dialog before a broader history deletion.
Should I disable Enhanced Tracking Protection permanently?
No. Use the shield-panel switch only as a diagnostic test, then restore protection or create a narrowly scoped exception if the site genuinely requires it.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What information should I send a website owner?
Send the page URL, Firefox and operating-system versions, whether another browser fails, the image URL if visible, and a screenshot or error text.
