On Windows, open the page in Microsoft Edge and press Ctrl+Shift+S. Edge opens its current Screenshot tool (formerly Web Capture). Capture the web page or PDF, then inspect the save dialog: Microsoft’s current documentation does not promise that PNG is always offered, so select PNG only when it appears as an available format.
If Edge does not offer PNG, use Windows Snipping Tool with Windows+Shift+S. It can capture a rectangle, window, full screen, or freeform area. Open the resulting snip, choose Save as Image, and select PNG if your version presents that file type.
Save an Edge screenshot as PNG
- Open the web page or PDF in Microsoft Edge.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows. You can also open the page’s context menu or Edge’s Settings and more menu and choose Screenshot, if the command is available.
- Use the on-screen capture controls to select the content you need. Edge documents capture of web and PDF content and annotation with inking tools.
- Choose the save command. If the dialog includes a file-type list, select PNG, choose a folder and filename, and save.
- Check the resulting filename extension and open the file in an image viewer. If the dialog did not offer PNG, do not assume that changing the extension converted the image; use Snipping Tool or an image converter instead.
Microsoft describes the feature this way: “This feature lets users capture web and PDF content, and annotate captures using inking tools.”
The exact buttons and export-format list can vary by Edge build. The official documentation confirms the Screenshot entry points and capture capabilities, but it does not specify a universal PNG save-dialog sequence.

Use Snipping Tool when Edge does not give you PNG
Snipping Tool is the documented Windows fallback when you need a screen-region image or an explicit save-copy action.
- Press Windows+Shift+S.
- Choose a capture mode: Rectangular, Window, Full-screen, or Freeform.
- Capture the Edge window, page area, or screen region.
- Open the captured snip in Snipping Tool if it is not already displayed. Windows automatically saves captured snips to the Screenshots folder.
- Choose Save as Image, select a destination and filename, and select PNG only if the dialog lists it.
- Reopen the saved file and confirm its extension before uploading or attaching it.
Snipping Tool captures what is visible on the screen. It is therefore useful for a precise region, a whole Edge window, or a monitor, while Edge Screenshot is the browser-integrated choice for web and PDF content.
Which capture method should you choose?

There is no documented image-quality comparison between the two capture tools in the cited Microsoft material. Choose based on whether you need browser capture or a screen selection, then verify the actual file type produced.

Edge Screenshot on Windows and macOS
Windows
The documented Windows shortcut is Ctrl+Shift+S. If the shortcut does nothing, try the context menu and the Settings and more menu. A policy-controlled installation may hide all three entry points.

Microsoft’s policy documentation lists Screenshot/Web Capture support on macOS beginning with Edge version 87. It does not provide a macOS keyboard shortcut in the material covered here, so use the Edge menus when the feature is enabled. The same documentation lists Android and iOS as unsupported for this policy-controlled feature.
Mobile Edge
Do not assume that the desktop Screenshot command exists in Android or iOS Edge. The policy support matrix does not cover those mobile platforms for this feature; use the operating system’s own screen-capture tools if you need a mobile image.

Why Screenshot may be missing
WebCaptureEnabled policy
Microsoft’s WebCaptureEnabled policy controls browser access to Screenshot/Web Capture. When the policy is enabled or left unconfigured, Microsoft says the command appears in the context menu, the Settings and more menu, and the Ctrl+Shift+S shortcut. An organization can configure the policy to disable access.
DisableScreenshots policy
A separate DisableScreenshots policy controls screenshot capture through keyboard shortcuts or extension APIs. Microsoft notes that Web Capture may still be available through the browser or other methods even when screenshots are disabled. On a managed computer, the absence of one command does not identify which policy is responsible.
Practical checks
- Confirm that you are using the desktop Edge build rather than mobile Edge.
- Try all documented entry points: shortcut, context menu, and Settings and more.
- Ask your administrator whether Web Capture or screenshot policies are configured.
- Use Snipping Tool if your organization permits it and you only need a screen-region capture.
How to verify that the file is really PNG
- Look at the saved filename. A
.pngextension is a useful first check, not proof that a differently encoded file was converted. - Open the file in an image viewer that displays format or properties information.
- If the save dialog offered several formats, record the selected type rather than relying on a renamed extension.
- For a website upload, follow that site’s requirements for color mode, dimensions, and maximum file size; those requirements are separate from Edge’s capture command.
Microsoft’s documentation does not enumerate every format exposed by every Edge or Snipping Tool build. Treat the format selector in your own installation as authoritative.

Common problems and fixes
The shortcut does nothing
Open the context menu and the Settings and more menu and look for Screenshot. If it is absent there as well, a managed-device policy, an unsupported platform, or a build-specific menu change may be involved. Snipping Tool is the Windows fallback for a visible screen capture.
I captured the wrong area
Repeat the capture and choose the mode that matches the task. Edge Screenshot is intended for web or PDF content; Snipping Tool lets you choose rectangular, window, full-screen, or freeform selection.
The save dialog has no PNG option
Do not promise yourself a PNG when the format is not listed. Save the available image, or repeat the capture with Snipping Tool and use Save as Image if PNG is offered there. A filename change alone does not perform a format conversion.

The image contains a cookie banner, popup, or chat box
Those elements are part of what a browser sees at capture time. Close or accept the banner and dismiss overlays before capturing, if the page allows it. For automated captures where removing these elements matters, use the API option below.
Printing produced a PDF instead
Ctrl+P and Command+P open Edge’s print dialog. Printing is not the Screenshot save workflow. Return to Screenshot or Snipping Tool when the required output is an image.
