WordPress 7.0, named “Armstrong,” was released on May 20, 2026. It is no longer an upcoming release: its confirmed changes span AI connection tools, a refreshed admin experience, new editing and design controls, and more options for developers. Whether those additions matter to your site depends on how you edit or build it—and, for AI workflows, which optional integrations and external services you choose.
When did WordPress 7.0 come out?
WordPress 7.0 was publicly released on May 20, 2026, according to the official release announcement and WordPress version documentation. An earlier schedule targeted April 9. The project later revised the date to May 20, explaining that contributors needed more time to finalize architectural improvements; the schedule update records that change.
What’s new in WordPress 7.0?
The release announcement groups its changes across connected AI capabilities, administration, editing and design, and developer tools. These are described features, not published performance benchmarks or a guarantee that every capability is enabled on every site.
AI connections and abilities
WordPress 7.0 introduces an AI Client in Core for communication with generative AI models, alongside a dashboard hub for managing connections and integration with the Abilities API. A Client-Side Abilities package adds a user interface and command palette. The announcement also describes an optional AI plugin for tasks such as generating or editing images, titles, excerpts, and alt text.
#1 Best Overall
Core provides connection and integration infrastructure; it does not include an AI provider or mean that every AI task is automatically available. Actual use depends on the provider, connection, optional plugin, and site configuration. The release lead, Matias Ventura, described the aim as “laying the foundation for AI across the WordPress experience”—a statement of project direction, not a promise that all workflows are built in or will improve results.
Administration and editorial workflow
- Refreshed administration theme: the dashboard’s visual experience has been updated.
- Command Palette: open it from the admin bar with ⌘K on a Mac or Ctrl+K on Windows and Linux.
- Font management: a dedicated page supports block, hybrid, and classic themes.
- Visual revision browsing: revisions can be compared visually, rather than relying only on text-based inspection.
Blocks and design controls
- Additional blocks: Gallery, Heading, Breadcrumbs, and Icons.
- Responsive visibility: control whether a block is shown or hidden by device.
- Navigation overlays: customize overlays using blocks and patterns.
- Patterns: edit a pattern as a unit or detach it for independent changes.
- Block-level CSS: apply custom CSS to an individual block.
Developer tools
Developers can create blocks and patterns server-side in PHP, with automatic registration through the block API. The Site Editor is also more extensible: the announcement describes routing, route validation, and a wordpress/boot package for custom Site Editor pages.
Which WordPress 7.0 changes matter for your work?
| Reader | Relevant changes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Site editor or designer | New blocks, responsive visibility, customizable navigation overlays, pattern editing, and block-level CSS. | Try the controls in your editing workflow and confirm that your theme and plugins behave as expected. |
| Administrator or content editor | Refreshed admin theme, Command Palette, font management, and visual revision browsing. | Check whether the new navigation and revision view fit your team’s day-to-day process. |
| Site owner interested in AI | AI Client and connection management in Core, with an optional AI plugin described for specific content and image tasks. | Confirm the provider, plugin, and connection you intend to use; AI functionality is not a bundled provider service. |
| Plugin or theme developer | PHP-based server-side block and pattern creation, automatic block API registration, and a more extensible Site Editor. | Review the release documentation and test changes against the theme, plugins, and hosting setup you support. |
Should you update to WordPress 7.0?
If you want its editing, administration, or developer features, 7.0 is the release that introduced them. The announcement confirms the release, but it does not establish compatibility for your particular site. Before updating a production installation, check your theme and plugins, make a backup, and follow your host’s guidance. Test the update in a staging environment if one is available, especially when the site depends on custom code or business-critical workflows.
To start an update, use the WordPress dashboard or the release archive. WordPress.org documents both routes on its WordPress 7.0 version page.
