Simply renaming image.webp to image.jpg does not convert the image data.
The exact menu label varies by browser, operating system, site, and device. The reliable process is always the same: save, inspect, convert when necessary, and keep the original until you have checked the JPEG.
1. Save the image from the webpage
Windows, macOS, Linux, and ChromeOS
- Open the page containing the image and wait for the image to finish loading.
- Right-click the image. On a trackpad, use the equivalent secondary click.
- Choose the browser option similar to Save image as, Save image, or Download image. Do not choose Save page as; that saves webpage files rather than the individual picture.
- Select a folder and enter a useful filename. Leave the existing extension visible if your file picker shows one, then click Save.
Some sites disable the context menu, place the visible picture inside a link, or display an image through a viewer. In those cases, look for a download button in the viewer, open the image in a new tab and try the image menu there, or ask the site owner for an authorized original. Do not bypass access controls or download material you do not have permission to use.
iPhone and iPad
Touch and hold the image, then choose the available save or download command. Depending on the page and iOS version, the result may go to Photos or the Files app. If you need to convert it later, saving to Files makes the downloaded filename and extension easier to inspect.

Android phones and tablets
Touch and hold the picture and choose the browser’s download or save-image command. Check the notification or the Downloads folder afterward. A site may offer its own download control instead of exposing the browser’s image menu.
2. Check whether the file is really JPEG
JPEG files normally use .jpg or .jpeg. Open your file manager and enable filename extensions if they are hidden. You can also open the file’s information or properties panel and inspect its type. An image viewer that identifies the format is another useful check.
- Already JPG or JPEG: you can use the saved file as-is.
- WebP: common on modern websites and supported by current major browsers; convert it before sending it to a system that requires JPEG.
- PNG: often used where transparency or lossless detail matters; converting to JPEG removes transparency.
- AVIF, GIF, TIFF, or another type: use an image application that can open the source and export JPEG.
The extension is only a label. The file’s internal image encoding determines its format, so changing the characters after the final dot does not perform a conversion and can make the file fail to open.
3. Convert the downloaded image to JPG
Using an image editor
- Open the downloaded file in an image editor that supports its format.
- Choose Export, Save a copy, or the equivalent command rather than overwriting the original.
- Select JPEG or JPG as the output format.
- Choose a quality setting when offered. Higher quality generally produces a larger file; lower quality produces a smaller file with more visible compression.
- Give the output a new name such as
photo-converted.jpgand save it. - Open the new file and confirm that it displays correctly and has a
.jpgor.jpegextension.
Keep the original WebP or PNG. It may preserve transparency, animation, metadata, or detail that JPEG cannot. JPEG is a lossy format and does not support transparent pixels; transparent areas are normally replaced by a solid background during export.

Using a built-in preview or paint application
Most desktop systems include a basic image application with an export or “save as” format list. Open the image, select JPEG in that list, set quality if available, and save a separate copy. The wording differs by operating system, so follow the labels shown by your installed application rather than relying on a particular menu name.
Using a web converter
A browser-based converter can be convenient for a non-sensitive image, but uploading transfers the file to a third party. Read its privacy terms, file-size limits, retention policy, and supported input types. Do not upload confidential documents, personal photos, private customer data, or copyrighted material unless you are authorized to do so. Download the resulting JPEG and verify it before deleting the source.
4. Why a webpage image downloads as WebP instead of JPG
Websites can deliver modern formats such as WebP even when the picture looks like an ordinary photograph. Browsers decode that format for display, but the browser’s save action may preserve the delivered WebP file. The image’s appearance on the page does not reveal its storage format.
Responsive images add another complication: a page can select a different file for a phone, a high-density display, or a narrow window. The downloaded version may therefore have different dimensions or compression from the picture you expected. Inspect the saved file rather than assuming that the extension matches the visible image.

Firefox and other browsers also use their configured file-type and download actions. If a browser opens a file instead of downloading it, use its download control or adjust the relevant file-handling preference, then check the resulting file in your Downloads folder.
5. When the browser will not save the image
The right-click menu is blocked
Try the page’s own download button, open the image in a new tab, or use the browser’s page information and download controls where available. A blocked context menu does not prove that you may copy the image; respect the site’s terms and copyright.
You saved an HTML file instead
You probably selected Save page as or saved a link rather than the image. Return to the image itself and use the image-specific save command. If the file opens as a webpage, do not rename it to JPG.
The downloaded file is tiny or blank
The visible picture may be a placeholder, thumbnail, lazy-loaded image, or a protected viewer surface. Wait for it to load, open the largest available version, and use the site’s authorized download control. A blank result can also mean that the page delivered an image requiring a script or session that is no longer available.

The JPEG looks worse than the original
JPEG recompresses the image and can introduce blockiness around text or sharp edges. Export once from the highest-quality source, choose a higher quality setting, and avoid repeatedly opening and saving the JPEG. For graphics with transparency, flat colors, or text, PNG may be a better final format.
The converted file has a black or white background
The source likely contained transparency. JPEG cannot store transparent pixels. Place the image over the intended background before exporting, or keep a PNG/WebP copy when transparency is required.
6. A dependable workflow for quality and organization
- Save the source: download the image without changing its bytes.
- Record the source: keep the original filename and, when useful, the page address and download date in your notes.
- Inspect dimensions: confirm that the download is large enough for its intended use; converting format cannot restore detail that was absent from the source.
- Convert once: export a separate JPEG from the original.
- Compare: check edges, text, colors, transparency, and file size at the intended display size.
- Archive intelligently: retain the original when you may need another format or a higher-quality export.
For a single image, the browser plus an existing image application is usually the simplest route. An optional browser extension can add “save as JPG,” PNG, or WebP choices to an image menu, but treat extensions as software: check the current publisher, permissions, reviews, and availability before installing. A store listing describes a feature; it is not independent testing or proof of safety or an affiliate relationship.

Saving an image downloads an image asset already supplied by the page. It does not create a screenshot of the complete layout. If you need the rendered page, a specific element, or a full-page capture, use a screenshot tool and then select JPEG output where supported. This is especially useful when the visual content is assembled by scripts, charts, or CSS rather than provided as one downloadable file.

ScreenshotNeo can return a rendered webpage screenshot through one request. It accepts the cookie or consent banner as a visitor and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status in headers.

8. Cost, privacy, and format decisions
- Browser download: normally free, fastest for one image, and keeps the original delivered file.
- Desktop conversion: useful for private files and repeat work; quality and metadata controls depend on the application.
- Online conversion: convenient, but adds upload, retention, and privacy considerations.
- Screenshot API: appropriate for rendered pages, automation, batches, or repeatable output; account limits and API settings apply.
Choose JPEG when broad compatibility and smaller photographic files matter. Choose PNG or another lossless format when transparency, crisp text, or repeated editing matters. Always confirm the receiving system’s required extension, maximum dimensions, and file-size limit before exporting.

Is JPG different from JPEG?
No. JPG and JPEG are two common filename extensions for the same image format.
Can I convert a WebP image to JPG by renaming it?
No. Renaming changes only the filename. Open the image and export a new JPEG so the encoded data changes.
Will converting PNG to JPG preserve transparency?
No. JPEG has no transparency channel; transparent areas must be placed over a solid background during export.
Why did the saved image have different dimensions from the one I saw?
Responsive webpages can deliver different image files based on viewport size, device pixel density, or available source resolution.
