If the print dialog is stuck, first cancel and retry; then check whether the problem affects one page, the browser, or printing elsewhere on your computer. If the browser preview remains broken, use its system print dialog or save the page from another browser.
Try the quickest recovery first
- If the print window still responds, cancel it. Reopen the page and try the print command again. In Edge, Microsoft recommends retrying the command or closing Edge and starting a new session when preview fails. Avoid force-closing a browser unless it is unresponsive and you accept the risk of losing unsaved work.
- If the preview opens but does not finish, wait briefly, then cancel and retry. If the problem persists, restart the browser and try once more.
- In Edge, if the preview says “Print preview failed,” select another available printer or destination and reopen the dialog. Microsoft notes that a missing built-in PDF viewer can prevent Edge from showing a preview; retrying or restarting Edge may help. This explanation applies to Edge, not necessarily other browsers. Microsoft’s Edge print troubleshooting lists these steps but does not promise they will fix every failure.
Find out whether the webpage or the browser is causing the problem
Try saving a different webpage or online document from the same browser. Then, if possible, try printing from another application. A failure limited to one page points toward that page’s content or print styling; a failure across multiple browser pages may be browser-specific. If other applications also fail, investigate the operating system, printer setup, driver, hardware, or connectivity. A printer driver can sometimes affect one browser differently, so these comparisons narrow the cause rather than prove it.

- Only one webpage fails: Try a simpler view if the browser offers one. In Edge, eligible pages may open in Immersive Reader; print from that view to avoid some page-specific clutter or styling.
- Several pages fail in one browser: Try the system print dialog or another browser’s PDF destination.
- Other applications also fail: Check the selected printer or PDF destination and investigate system-level printing or connectivity.
Microsoft describes print failures as arising from a variety of causes and recommends diagnosing whether the issue is with the webpage, browser, printer, or system. Its troubleshooting guide is specific to Edge, though comparing other apps and pages is useful for isolating the fault.

Edge can hand printing to the operating system’s print dialog instead of relying on its own preview. Open Edge’s print controls and choose Print using system dialog. Microsoft lists these direct shortcuts:

From the system dialog, choose the available PDF destination, such as Microsoft Print to PDF on Windows, if it is offered. The exact destination labels depend on the operating system and installed options. If you cannot find the command, look among the print dialog’s additional options; interface wording can change. Save the page as a PDF from another browser
A second browser is a workaround and diagnostic check, not proof that the first browser is defective. Use a browser’s built-in PDF destination rather than a physical printer.

Chrome on desktop
- Open the webpage and press Ctrl+P on Windows or Linux, or Command+P on Mac.
- In the print window, choose the PDF destination and adjust the available settings.
- Select Print or the equivalent save action, then choose where to store the file if prompted.
Chrome’s print controls also let you choose other destinations. To save to Google Drive, Chrome’s help describes selecting Save to Google Drive when the extension is installed; otherwise, save the PDF locally and upload it to Drive. See Chrome Help.

- Open the menu and choose Print.
- In the preview, set Destination to Save to PDF.
- Choose any needed page range, orientation, margins, paper size, scale, or header and footer settings, then select Print and save the file.
Firefox offers a Simplified format where available, which can remove some page clutter. It is not offered for every page. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing guide.

Edge
On Windows, press Ctrl+P; on macOS, press Command+P. You can also right-click the page and choose Print. Choose an available PDF destination in the print controls and save the output. If the preview is what hangs, use Edge’s system-dialog option described above. For eligible pages, Immersive Reader may offer a less cluttered version to print. See Microsoft’s Edge print guidance.
