Open the webpage’s print preview, choose the browser’s PDF destination, set a paper size if that workflow offers it, and check the preview before saving. A standard paper-size menu is not the same as a field for arbitrary width and height: ordinary browser dialogs do not all provide custom dimensions. If you need an exact size, the options depend on whether you control the webpage’s print CSS, manage Chrome settings, or are building an app with WebView2.
Save a webpage as a PDF using the browser’s print preview
- Open Print. In Microsoft Edge, use the menu’s Print command or press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on macOS. In Firefox, open the print view from the browser menu or use the print shortcut for your platform.
- Choose a PDF destination. Firefox documents a destination named “Save to PDF.” In other browsers, choose the available PDF destination or system option that creates a PDF rather than sending the job to a physical printer.
- Inspect the print settings. Expand More settings where available. Check Paper size, Scale, Margins, page range, headers and footers, and background graphics. The available controls vary by browser, platform, and destination.
- Adjust and review the preview. If the exact size is unavailable, a nearby standard size with adjusted scale or margins may work, but it will not change the PDF to arbitrary dimensions. Check for clipped content, unexpected page breaks, unreadably small text, missing backgrounds, and unwanted headers or footers.
- Save, then verify dimensions if they matter. Use a PDF viewer or editor to inspect the output page size when exact dimensions are a requirement. A print preview is useful, but checking the saved file confirms the result.
Edge documents scaling options including Fit to printable area, Actual size, and a custom percentage, along with margin and background settings. Firefox documents paper size, scale, margins, backgrounds, and headers and footers. Those controls should not be taken as a promise that every configuration accepts a free-form width and height. See Firefox’s print help and Microsoft Edge’s print instructions.

What counts as a custom paper size?
Choosing from a paper-size menu
A menu lets you select from the sizes available in that print workflow. Firefox documents a Paper size control, but its help does not promise that every Firefox setup has an editable custom-dimension field. The same caution applies when switching browsers or destinations: check the controls in your own print preview rather than assuming the options match.

Setting dimensions with print CSS
If you control the page or its stylesheet, CSS @page can specify the printed page box and its margins. For example, a page author could add this to a print stylesheet:
#1 Best Overall
- 1 ream (500 sheets) of 8.5 x 11 white copier and printer paper for home or office use
- Multipurpose letter size copy paper works with laser/inkjet printers, copiers and fax machines
- Smooth 20lb weight paper for consistent ink and toner distribution; dries quickly and resists paper jams
- Bright white paper (92 GE; 104 Euro) offers great contrast for crisp printing and vivid color
- Virgin copy paper providing professional quality results; acid-free to prevent yellowing
@media print {
@page {
size: 148mm 210mm;
margin: 12mm;
}
}
The dimensions above are an illustrative A5-sized page box, not a guarantee that every browser, printer, or PDF destination will produce identical output. The rule is useful when you can change the site’s CSS; it does not let a reader impose a stylesheet on any unrelated website. Chrome for Developers describes the paged-media model and notes that Chrome and Firefox support @page. See Chrome’s paged-media guidance.
Using a managed Chrome policy
Organizations that administer Chrome can set the Default printing page size policy. Google documents a Custom option that takes required height and width in micrometers, for ChromeOS and Chrome browser on Windows, Mac, and Linux. This is an administrator policy, not a general consumer print-dialog feature. Google warns that incompatible values, or dimensions unavailable on the selected printer, cause the policy to be ignored. See Google’s Chrome policy documentation.

Generating a PDF from a WebView2 app
Developers embedding Microsoft Edge WebView2 can use PrintToPdf or PrintToPdfStream with custom print settings. The ShowPrintUI route opens a browser or operating-system dialog and offers less programmatic customization. This is an application-development option, not a setting for ordinary browser users. See Microsoft’s WebView2 printing documentation.

| Situation | Best-fit route | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You are saving a page as an ordinary user | Browser print preview and PDF destination | Use the available size menu and preview. Arbitrary dimensions may not be exposed. |
| You control the page’s stylesheet | Print CSS with @page |
Can define page-box size and margins for printing in supported browsers; does not apply to an unrelated site you cannot edit. |
| You administer a Chrome environment | Default printing page size policy | Custom dimensions are configured in micrometers. Invalid or unsupported values may be ignored. |
| You are developing a WebView2 application | PrintToPdf or PrintToPdfStream |
Use custom print settings through the app API; the print UI route is less customizable. |
For the saved result, compare the actual page dimensions, pagination and clipping, legibility after scaling, margins, and whether backgrounds or browser headers and footers appear. Browser and destination combinations are not fully interchangeable. Edge and Firefox both describe preview-related settings, while Chrome’s policy and WebView2 documentation address administrator and developer workflows rather than a universal end-user control.

Fix common print-to-PDF problems
The exact size is missing
First determine whether the selected PDF destination exposes only a fixed paper-size menu. If you control the page, use print CSS; if Chrome is centrally managed, ask an administrator whether the page-size policy is appropriate. WebView2 custom settings are relevant only when you are building an application. Do not assume that a browser can add arbitrary dimensions to a dialog that does not offer them.
The content is cut off or split awkwardly
Check the preview, then try a different paper size, scale, or margin setting. Edge documents Fit to printable area, Actual size, and a custom scale percentage; shrinking to fit can prevent clipping but may make text too small. If you own the page’s print stylesheet, revise its page size and margins and review page breaks.

The PDF looks different from the screen
Web pages can reflow for print. Check page breaks, image placement, backgrounds, and headers or footers in the preview. If the browser adds its own headers and footers, turn them off in the print dialog if that control is available. Chrome’s paged-media guidance notes that browser headers and footers may appear when space permits; very small or zero margins can suppress them.
Background colors or images are missing
Look for a background-graphics option in the print settings and enable it if the intended output needs backgrounds. Firefox and Edge document background controls, but the exact label and availability can depend on the workflow.

A managed Chrome size is ignored
Ask the administrator to check that the configured height and width are compatible and that the selected printer supports the size. Google states that incompatible values or a size unavailable on the selected printer cause the policy to be ignored.

If your goal is to capture a page as an image or a PDF through an API, ScreenshotNeo accepts a URL in one GET request. This is a screenshot/PDF capture service, not a way to make a browser’s local Save as PDF dialog accept custom paper dimensions. For supported parameters and response details, see the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo can accept cookie or consent banners and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Every feature is on every plan. Can I force a custom paper size when saving any website as a PDF?
No. A print dialog may offer preset sizes without an arbitrary-dimensions field. Custom sizing depends on whether you can change the page’s print CSS, administer Chrome policy, or control PDF generation in an application.
Does ScreenshotNeo set a custom paper size for a browser’s Save as PDF dialog?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures a URL through its API or MCP server; it does not change local browser print-dialog controls.
