To save an entire web page as a PNG, use your browser’s built-in full-page screenshot command. In Firefox, right-click the page and choose Take Screenshot → Save full page. In Edge, press Ctrl+Shift+S and choose Capture full page. In Chrome desktop, open DevTools, run Capture full size screenshot from the Command Menu, and save the resulting PNG.
The methods below also cover visible-only captures, individual elements, lazy-loaded content, scrolling panels, and an automated API option.
Choose the right capture method
| Need | Best option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fast, one-off full page | Firefox Take Screenshot | It has a direct Save full page command. |
| Full page with quick markup | Edge Screenshot | You can capture the whole page or an area, then use pen or touch annotation. |
| Chrome desktop PNG | DevTools Capture full size screenshot | It captures beyond the visible viewport without an extension. |
| One element or repeatable technical captures | Firefox Developer Tools | The screenshot command supports selectors, delay, and device-pixel-ratio options. |
A PNG records pixels, so it is useful for visual sharing, design review, bug reports, and a static record. Choose PDF instead when searchable text, selectable links, accessibility, or printing is more important.
Save a full web page as PNG in Firefox
Full-page capture
- Open the page and wait until its main content has rendered.
- Right-click an empty part of the page and select Take Screenshot. You can also press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
- Choose Save full page. Firefox also offers Save visible, a draggable region, and automatically detected page parts.
- Click Download. Mozilla’s support documentation says the downloaded image uses a
.pngextension.
Capture only what is visible
Use Save visible when you need the current viewport rather than content below the fold. This is useful for a single error message or a quick status image.

Capture one element with Developer Tools
- Open Firefox Developer Tools and select Settings.
- Under Available Toolbox Buttons, enable Take a screenshot of the entire page.
- Use the screenshot button when you need a page-wide image or a selected element.
Firefox’s Web Console also supports a command such as :screenshot page.png --fullpage. Its options can add a delay, set device-pixel ratio, target a CSS selector, and force a particular output filename. A selector capture is preferable when a long page contains a small component you need to document.
Save a full web page as PNG in Microsoft Edge
- Open the page you want to capture.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+S, or open Edge’s Screenshot tool from the browser menu.
- Select Capture full page to include content below the viewport. For a partial image, select an area instead.
- Use the save or copy control. Before saving, Edge can add pen or touch markup.
Edge’s full-page mode is designed to include content that extends beyond your screen. Review the result for fixed headers, embedded frames, and animated sections before sharing it.
Save a full web page as PNG in Google Chrome
Chrome desktop procedure
- Open the page and wait for images and other lazy-loaded content to appear.
- Open DevTools with Command+Option+I on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+I on Windows and Linux.
- Open the DevTools Command Menu with Command+Shift+P on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+P on Windows and Linux.
- Type screenshot.
- Choose Capture full size screenshot, then save the PNG downloaded by Chrome.
Capture one component
To capture a specific component, inspect its DOM node in DevTools and run Capture node screenshot from the related screenshot commands. This avoids stitching a full page when you only need a chart, card, table, or error panel.
Make sure the PNG contains everything
Lazy-loaded images
Some sites request images only after an element approaches the viewport. Scroll through the page once, wait for images to finish, and then capture it. Chrome’s full-size command can otherwise produce blank image areas.

Nested scrolling panels
A browser full-page capture follows the document, not necessarily a separate panel with its own scrollbar. If important content is inside a scrolling dashboard, capture that element separately or scroll the panel to each state and save multiple images.
Dynamic and fixed content
Animations, rotating carousels, live data, sticky headers, cookie notices, and chat widgets can change between the top and bottom of a capture. Pause motion where the site allows it, dismiss notices when appropriate, and inspect the PNG at full size. Cross-origin embeds may also remain incomplete because the browser cannot treat their contents as ordinary page pixels.
Very long pages
Long documents can create extremely tall images that are awkward to open or share. Consider capturing key sections, exporting a PDF, or using an automated service that can resize the final image. Never assume a successful download means every section rendered; inspect the image before publishing it.
Capture a page automatically with an API
For scheduled documentation, regression snapshots, bulk URLs, or server-side workflows, an API avoids opening a browser manually. ScreenshotNeo is the recommended screenshot API: it removes common consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; only clean shots are billed; and its lowest paid plan is $5 for 3,000 shots.
Or skip the browser setup:
Use one GET request. The API can return PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; the example below requests a WebP file, which you can change to the format required by your workflow. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for parameters and response details.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
Python:
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo can load full pages and lazy images, capture a CSS-selected element, emulate dark mode, use 12 device presets or a custom viewport, apply retina scale, and produce PDFs with paper size, margins, landscape mode, and page ranges. You can also supply custom CSS or JavaScript, click an element before capture, hide selectors, wait for a selector, delay, or network idle, block ads, trackers, requests, or resource types, and set headers, cookies, user agent, Authorization, timezone, and geolocation. Transparent backgrounds, image resizing, configurable-TTL caching, signed links for public <img> tags, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification cover common production needs. Parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.

The image stops before the bottom
Confirm that you selected full-page mode rather than visible-area mode. Then reload, let the page finish, and scroll through it once so lazy content is requested. If the content is in a nested panel, capture that panel separately.
Images are blank
Wait for network activity and image placeholders to settle. Disable aggressive content blocking for that page, or use a delay or selector wait in an automated capture. A page that requires login may also need an authenticated browser session or API cookies.

Live dashboards, rotating ads, animations, and personalized content are inherently variable. Freeze the test data where possible, wait for network idle, set a deterministic viewport and timezone, and record the capture time alongside the PNG.
Chrome does not show screenshot commands
Ensure DevTools is open and that you are using the Command Menu shortcut for your operating system. Type “screenshot” rather than searching the general browser menu; the full-size and node commands are DevTools actions.
The file is too large to share
Capture only the relevant element, resize the output, or choose WebP/JPEG when lossless PNG is not required. Keep PNG for diagrams, text-heavy UI, and archival clarity.

PNG quality, privacy, and repeatability checklist
- Verify the URL and wait for the final layout before capturing.
- Use a consistent viewport, zoom level, device-pixel ratio, and color mode for comparisons.
- Remove personal data, account numbers, tokens, and private URLs before sharing.
- Check fixed headers, overlays, lazy images, iframes, and scrolling panels in the saved file.
- Use PDF when readers need selectable text or accessible printing.
- For repeated captures, automate waits and authentication rather than relying on manual timing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I save only one part of a web page as a PNG?
Yes. Firefox supports a dragged region or detected page part, Edge supports area capture, and Chrome DevTools provides Capture node screenshot for an inspected element.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why does a full-page screenshot miss content inside a dashboard?
A dashboard panel may have its own scrollbar, so the browser captures the document but not every panel state. Capture the panel element separately or save each scrolled state.
Should I use PNG or PDF for a web page?
Use PNG for a visual, pixel-based record. Use PDF when searchable text, selectable links, accessibility, or printing is the priority.
Can an automated screenshot include a logged-in page?
It can when the capture workflow supplies the required cookies, headers, user agent, or Authorization credentials; never expose those credentials in a shared URL or image.
