Use your browser’s Print dialog, choose its PDF destination, and inspect the preview before saving. If content runs off the sides, try landscape orientation or reduce the scale; if page edges feel crowded, adjust margins or turn off browser headers and footers. Check every preview page: a website’s print layout may differ from what you see on screen.
Save the page and check for clipping
- Open the webpage you want to save, then open your browser’s Print dialog.
- Choose the PDF destination. In Firefox, Mozilla documents selecting Save to PDF from the destination menu.
- Inspect the preview before saving. Look for text or images missing at the left or right edges, content crowded near the top or bottom, and page breaks that split or omit material.
- Change one setting at a time, checking the preview again after each change. When the result is readable across all pages, save the PDF.
Do not assume the PDF will preserve the screen layout exactly. Mozilla notes that webpages can be set up to appear differently on paper than on screen (Mozilla Support: How to print web pages in Firefox).

Choose settings that bring clipped content into the printable area
Content cut off at the sides
Try Landscape orientation or reduce the print scale so the content fits within the paper width. In Microsoft Edge, Scale to print includes Fit to printable area, which adjusts the content to the paper’s printable area; it also offers Actual size and a custom scale. Firefox’s print settings include orientation and scale as well.

Headers, footers, or tight page edges
Adjust the margins to create usable space. Browser-generated headers and footers can add a date, URL, or page number; turn them off if they crowd the content. Chrome for Developers notes that browser headers and footers may not appear if the margins leave too little room for them (Chrome for Developers: Printing with CSS).

Missing background colors or images
Enable the print-background or background-graphics option if a background carries information you need. Background printing is separate from fixing page-edge clipping. Leave it off when you prefer a cleaner, less ink-heavy result.
Unexpected page breaks or changed layout
Review every page in the preview. Websites can use print-specific styling, and browsers divide content into printable pages; the result may paginate differently from the screen. Treat preview adjustments as a way to improve readability, not a guarantee that every site can be made to look identical to its on-screen version.

Where to find the relevant controls
Firefox
In the print dialog, choose Save to PDF from the destination menu. Under More settings, Mozilla documents controls for paper size, scale, margins, format, headers and footers, and print backgrounds. The format may offer Original or Simplified, if available; Simplified format is not compatible with print backgrounds. Labels and available options can vary by browser version and operating system. See Mozilla’s Firefox printing instructions.

Chrome
Open Chrome’s Print dialog and use its preview and available layout controls to assess the output. The Chrome for Developers documentation explains how printed content is divided into page areas and how browser-generated headers and footers interact with margins. It also describes Chrome 131 support for CSS-generated content in page margin boxes, a developer-facing detail that can affect a site’s print layout. The source does not provide a complete current, user-facing Chrome menu walkthrough, so rely on the labels shown in your own version’s dialog.
Fix common PDF print problems
| What you see in preview | What to try |
|---|---|
| Text or images cut off at the sides | Switch to landscape or reduce scale. In Edge, try Fit to printable area. |
| Date, URL, or page numbers crowd the content | Turn off browser headers and footers, or adjust margins to make more space. |
| Background colors or images are missing | Enable print backgrounds or background graphics if those elements convey information. |
| Page breaks differ from the screen | Inspect every preview page and account for the website’s print layout and browser pagination. |
These steps can improve a PDF’s fit and readability, but they cannot force every website to reproduce its screen layout on paper. Mozilla explicitly cautions that webpages may look different when printed.

Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents, including Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.
