The steps depend on where your slideshow lives. On a Mac, Photos can export a saved slideshow project directly as a video. On iPhone or iPad, use iMovie when you need a standalone video file; Photos’ slideshow guide describes playing and sharing a slideshow, but not exporting it directly as a video. For a Keynote presentation, export the presentation as a movie.
Choose the workflow that matches your slideshow

Export a slideshow from Photos on Mac
This works for a saved slideshow project in Photos. Apple says that exporting a slideshow creates a video file in the format you select. See Export photos, videos, slideshows and memories on Mac.

- Open Photos and select the slideshow under Projects.
- Click Export in the toolbar, or choose File > Export > Export Slide show.
- Enter a filename, choose a format from the Format menu, and select where to save the video.
- Click Save.
Apple documents 480p for standard-definition displays and 720p or 1080p for high-definition displays in this export screen. These are the choices Apple lists for the Photos export workflow, not a universal recommendation for every social platform or playback device.

If you have not made the slideshow yet
Select photos and videos in Photos, then choose File > Create > Slideshow > Photos to start a new project. Arrange the items and customize the theme, music, and slide duration before exporting. This is different from starting a temporary slideshow for playback.

Save an iPhone Photos slideshow as a video
Photos on iPhone can play a slideshow from selected items, but Apple’s iPhone guide does not document a direct standalone-video export command for that slideshow. The guide’s sharing action shares through an available option; do not expect a guaranteed “Save as Video” button. To make a video file, create the movie in iMovie. Start and customize the Photos slideshow
- In Photos, select the items in your Library.
- Tap More, then Start Slideshow.
- While it plays, tap the screen to adjust options such as transitions, timing, music, or looping.
Make and save the video in iMovie
Use the selected photos and videos to make a movie in iMovie, then export the finished project:

- Open the completed project in iMovie and tap Share.
- Tap Share Video.
- In Options, choose an available resolution or frame rate. The choices depend on the video.
- Decide whether to include HDR, then tap Save to Files to choose a local or iCloud Drive folder, or Save Video to put the video in Photos.
Apple says, “For compatibility with most devices, turn off this option,” referring specifically to HDR when sharing an iMovie movie or trailer. If the receiving display supports HDR and you want HDR output, you can leave it on; otherwise, turning it off favors compatibility with most devices.

Save an iMovie video on iPad
For an iMovie project, select the movie in Projects, tap Share, then tap Save Video and choose an available resolution. Apple’s instructions for sharing a 4K project specifically cover saving from iPhone or iPad to the Photos library; available choices depend on the project and installed software. For a Files destination, use Share Video and then Save to Files when those controls appear. See Share 4K videos with iMovie.

Export a Keynote presentation as a movie
If your slideshow is a Keynote presentation, export it as a movie from Keynote rather than recreating it as a Photos or iMovie slideshow. The format you choose affects compatibility, file size, and suitability for editing. Apple’s Export to other file formats in Keynote on Mac describes the available movie formats.

Choose export settings for the destination
- For broad playback compatibility: use H.264 for a Keynote movie. For an iMovie export, turn HDR off if compatibility with most devices is the priority.
- For lower storage use: HEVC is the Keynote option Apple describes as more storage-efficient at similar visual quality.
- For further editing: ProRes is the editing-oriented Keynote choice; it is not needed simply to share a slideshow.
- For Photos or Files: choose the corresponding save action in iMovie. Which resolutions, frame rates, and HDR options appear depends on the video and app controls.
