How to Save a Full Webpage as an Image in Firefox

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Firefox’s built-in Take Screenshot command. Open the page, press Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux (or Command+Shift+S on macOS), choose Save full page, then select Download. Firefox saves a PNG image in its default download folder. You can choose Copy instead to put the image on your clipboard.

Save an entire webpage in Firefox

Firefox can capture the page beyond the visible browser window, including content you reach by scrolling. The normal workflow is:

  1. Open the webpage you want to capture.
  2. Right-click an empty area of the page and choose Take Screenshot. If the context menu is inconvenient, use Ctrl+Shift+S on Windows or Linux, or Command+Shift+S on macOS.
  3. In the capture bar, select Save full page. This is the option that includes material below the current viewport.
  4. Choose Download to save the image, or Copy to place it on the clipboard.

The downloaded file is an image; Mozilla’s help example uses a filename ending in .png. Unless you changed Firefox’s download preference, find it in the browser’s default download folder.

Full page versus visible area

Save full page

Save full page stitches the page’s content below the window into one capture. Use it for documentation, an article archive, a long receipt, or a bug report where the lower sections matter.

Save visible

Save visible captures only what is currently displayed in the browser viewport. Choose it when you need a dashboard panel, a single paragraph, or a compact image that does not include the rest of the document.

Scroll to the exact position you need before selecting Save visible. For a full-page result, do not manually scroll first; Firefox’s full-page command handles content outside the current view.

Download the image or copy it

Download

Download writes an image file to disk, making it suitable for attaching to a ticket, inserting into a document, or uploading to a service. Check Firefox’s download panel if you are unsure where the file went.

Copy

Copy sends the capture to the system clipboard. Paste it into an image editor, email, presentation, or chat application. Clipboard contents can be lost when you copy something else, so use Download when you need a durable file.

Add a Screenshot button to the Firefox toolbar

If you use the feature often, place its control on the toolbar:

  1. Open the Firefox menu.
  2. Choose More Tools.
  3. Select Customize Toolbar.
  4. Find the Screenshot item and drag it to the toolbar.
  5. Click Done.

You can then start a capture from the toolbar without opening the page context menu. Firefox’s labels can change between releases, so if a label differs, look for the item named Screenshot or Take Screenshot.

Developer Tools method for advanced captures

Firefox Developer Tools expose a command-line route with additional controls. This is useful when you need a delay, a device-pixel-ratio setting, a particular filename, or a CSS selector.

  1. Open Developer Tools with F12 or the browser’s Developer Tools command.
  2. Open the toolbox settings and enable the screenshot button if it is not already visible.
  3. Open the Developer Tools command line and run:
:screenshot filename.png --fullpage

The --fullpage flag requests content beyond the current window. Firefox’s command documentation also describes options for delay, device pixel ratio, filename, and CSS selector. Treat this as an alternative route, not the quickest method for an ordinary full-page image.

Why “Save Page As” is not a screenshot

Firefox’s Save Page As command stores webpage data. Depending on your choice, it can create a complete webpage with supporting files, HTML only, text, or all files. Those outputs are useful for preserving or inspecting a webpage’s source, but they are not one image of the rendered page.

If your goal is a PNG image, use Take Screenshot and then Download. Use Save Page As only when you need an editable or offline webpage package.

Preparing a page for a reliable full capture

Let important content load

Modern pages may insert images, charts, and text only after scrolling or after a short delay. Wait until the page has finished loading before starting the capture. If a section is still blank, reload and allow its scripts and images to complete.

Check overlays and consent dialogs

A cookie notice, newsletter form, chat bubble, or sign-in prompt can cover part of the result. Close or accept overlays before taking the screenshot when you are allowed to do so. If the dialog is required for the page to continue, complete it first, then capture.

Consider very long pages

A full-page image can be extremely tall. Image editors and messaging systems may display or upload such files slowly. For a long technical document, consider several visible captures or the Developer Tools route with a selector that limits the area.

Respect access controls

Firefox cannot capture content you cannot view. A page behind authentication requires an active session, and a site that blocks your browser may show a challenge instead of the intended content. Do not attempt to bypass access controls.

Troubleshooting

“Take Screenshot” is missing

Use the keyboard shortcut first. If that does not open the capture interface, open More Tools → Customize Toolbar and drag Screenshot onto the toolbar. Restarting Firefox can also restore a temporarily missing menu item.

The image contains only the visible viewport

In the capture interface, choose Save full page, not Save visible. If you used Developer Tools, verify that the command includes --fullpage.

The downloaded file cannot be found

Open Firefox’s downloads panel and select the folder or “show in folder” action for the screenshot. The file is normally in Firefox’s configured default download directory.

Part of the page is blank

Wait for lazy-loaded images and interactive sections to finish rendering, then capture again. A reload may help. If the blank region appears only in the full-page result, try the Developer Tools command and a short delay, or capture the specific element with a selector.

A popup or chat widget is in the image

Close the widget before capturing. Some overlays return after a reload; dismiss them again and avoid starting the capture until the page is stable.

The result is too large to share

Use Save visible for focused sections, split the page into several captures, or resize the downloaded image in an editor. A PDF may be a better format when the destination is designed for paginated documents.

Or skip the browser setup

For automated captures, CI jobs, bulk URLs, or pages that need repeatable rendering, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single request returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. It accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets. Bot checks, CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed; the response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers.

Here is a complete cURL request (see the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options):

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Python:

import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://stripe.com"}, timeout=90)
r.raise_for_status()
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)

Node.js:

const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
if (!res.ok) throw new Error(`HTTP ${res.status}`);
const fs = await import('node:fs/promises');
await fs.writeFile('shot.webp', Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer()));

ScreenshotNeo includes full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-selector element capture, custom CSS and JavaScript, click and wait actions, ad and tracker blocking, custom headers and cookies, user-agent, authorization, timezone and geolocation, transparent backgrounds, resizing, chosen cache TTLs, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API, and an OpenAPI specification. Its MCP server exposes take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf to Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients.

The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to get started.

Quick decision guide

  • One occasional image: Firefox Take Screenshot → Save full page → Download.
  • Only the current screen: choose Save visible.
  • Clipboard workflow: choose Copy.
  • Selectors, delays, or repeatable automation: use Developer Tools or ScreenshotNeo.
  • Webpage files rather than an image: use Save Page As.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Firefox save a full webpage as JPG?

Firefox’s built-in screenshot workflow downloads an image such as PNG. Convert the downloaded file to JPG or WebP with an image editor if your destination requires another format.

Does full-page capture include content below the fold?

Yes. Select Save full page; Save visible is limited to the current viewport.

Can I capture just one element?

The Developer Tools screenshot command supports a CSS selector, and ScreenshotNeo can capture one element by selector through its API.

Is Firefox’s screenshot the same as saving HTML?

No. Take Screenshot creates an image of the rendered page. Save Page As stores webpage content and supporting files.
