To collect e-commerce prices, identify the exact products and variants you need, check whether the retailer allows your intended access, then collect and validate each price with its currency, source, timestamp, and relevant market or promotion context. A scraped number is an observation—not proof of a stable price available to every shopper.
What a useful price observation contains
A price record is only useful for comparison if you can tell what it describes and when and where it was observed. At minimum, store:
- Product identity and variant: name, model, size, color, pack count, or other option that affects price.
- Displayed price and currency: keep the amount and currency separate from any formatted text.
- Price context: regular or sale price, promotion details, availability, shipping, and tax treatment when relevant.
- Source URL and observation time: record the page and a timestamp, preferably in UTC.
- Market or session context: record the region or other conditions needed to interpret the result, without collecting unnecessary personal data.
Without that context, two different prices may look like a price change when they actually refer to different product sizes, currencies, sale conditions, or markets. A stored observation should be traceable to the page and collection method that produced it.
Check access and scope before collecting
First define whether you need a one-time comparison or an ongoing price history. Identify the retailer pages, exact variants, market, observation interval, and intended use. Then check whether an official API, product feed, or data-sharing route is available before building a crawler.

Review the retailer’s current terms, robots.txt instructions, authentication boundary, and request expectations. Robots.txt is a technical crawl directive, not a complete legal assessment or permission by itself. Do not bypass a login, access control, CAPTCHA, or other restriction to obtain data. Site rules and relevant legal requirements can differ by retailer and jurisdiction; for consequential or commercial deployments, get advice specific to the sites and locations involved.
Eurostat’s November 2020 Practical guidelines for the use of web scraping for the HICP describe a statistical-office workflow that includes checking a shop’s robots.txt. Scrapy’s documentation describes middleware that filters requests disallowed by robots.txt when configured. These are process references, not permission to collect from any particular store.
A practical workflow for price collection
- Define the comparison. List the products, variants, retailer pages, markets, collection cadence, and decision the data should support.
- Choose an authorized route. Prefer a retailer-provided interface or feed when it meets the need. For page collection, verify current access rules and keep request volume reasonable.
- Collect only necessary fields. Capture identity, variant, displayed amounts, currency, relevant price conditions, source, time, and appropriate market context. Avoid unnecessary personal data or access beyond the authorized scope.
- Parse and normalize. Parse amount and currency explicitly; normalize variant identifiers and units. Keep product price, shipping, tax, and discounts distinct rather than combining unlike totals.
- Validate observations. Flag missing, implausible, or stale values. Confirm the variant and check whether a layout or parser change caused the apparent price movement.
- Compare equivalent records. Align product variant, currency, market, tax and shipping treatment, promotion state, and time window. Show the observation date and context with the result.
Example: read a published Product price from JSON-LD
Many product pages expose structured data in JSON-LD. The following Python example reads a publicly accessible page and looks for a Product with an Offer or AggregateOffer. It does not evade access controls, render JavaScript, or guarantee that structured data matches the final checkout price. Use it only where your intended collection is permitted. Install the dependencies with python -m pip install requests beautifulsoup4, set PRODUCT_URL to an allowed product page, and run the script.

JSON-LD can be absent, incomplete, stale, or ambiguous when a page has multiple variants or offers. Do not assume the first offer is the variant you intended: validate it against the displayed page and your product mapping before adding it to a comparison series. The unused imports in the example can be removed without changing its behavior.
Normalize and validate before comparing
Keep unlike amounts separate
A product listing may show a sale price alongside a crossed-out regular price, or omit shipping and tax until later in checkout. Store the displayed product amount as observed and capture other charges or conditions separately when your question requires them. Never silently compare a tax-inclusive total in one market with a tax-exclusive listing in another.
Check parser output against the page
For each newly supported page layout, compare extracted records with the visible listing. Flag missing currency, blank price, unexpected price jumps, absent product identity, and a change in the number of matching offers. Keep the observation time and collection method so you can diagnose a parser change rather than treating it as a real market movement.

Compare matching products and conditions
Align model, size, pack count, currency, market, promotion status, shipping and tax treatment, and observation window. If those dimensions cannot be aligned, label the differences instead of presenting the records as directly equivalent.
Why the same product may show different prices
Prices can vary over time, by location, promotion, or sales channel. They may also reflect individualized inputs. In January 2025, the FTC released an initial staff perspective describing intermediary systems that could use signals such as location, browsing history, and shopping behavior to set individualized offers or prices. The agency described examples in that staff perspective as hypothetical; the release did not establish that every retailer personalizes prices or quantify how common the practice is.

A scraper generally sees the page in the collection context it used. It cannot establish, from one observation alone, what all shoppers saw or why a price differed. Avoid collecting or retaining personal data unless it is necessary and properly authorized.

Neither approach is a universal winner. Choose by access permission, coverage of the exact retailers and page types, variant and price accuracy, freshness, regional or session support, export and integration needs, maintenance burden, and total cost at your required scale.

Scrapy.io documentation describes synchronous and asynchronous runs, dataset retrieval, and scheduling; its FAQ describes JSON and CSV exports and pay-per-result billing. These are vendor-described capabilities, not an independent performance assessment. Check current terms and coverage before relying on any provider.

Troubleshooting common collection failures
- HTTP 403 or 429: The site may refuse the request or be rate-limiting it. Stop repeated attempts, review access rules and request expectations, and use an official data route or seek authorization rather than trying to evade the restriction.
- Request succeeds but no price is found: The page may not expose JSON-LD offers, may render content with JavaScript, or may use another schema. Inspect the permitted page manually and choose an authorized extraction approach; do not treat missing markup as a zero price.
- Several prices are extracted: The page may contain multiple variants, regular and sale offers, or an aggregate range. Map records to the exact variant and price type before analysis; retain range bounds rather than collapsing them to an arbitrary value.
- A sudden price jump appears: Confirm currency, variant, promotion, market, and parser output against the page. A changed layout or mislabeled offer can resemble a genuine price movement.
- Observations become stale: Revisit whether the chosen collection interval matches the decision being made, and include the observation time in reports. No cadence guarantees that a displayed offer remains available later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I retain the full page HTML with each price observation?
Only if it is necessary for audit or parser debugging and permitted by the site’s terms and your data-handling rules. A compact record of extracted fields, source URL, timestamp, and collection method is often sufficient; avoid keeping unrelated page content or personal data by default.
