Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Run an untrusted model repository as executable code, not as a passive collection of weights. Inspect its files, prefer data-only weights, pin the exact code revision, and use a disposable environment that limits filesystem access, network access, credentials, and resource use.
Why a model repository needs a sandbox
A model can pose a risk through more than its checkpoint. Pickle-based files may execute code during deserialization; custom model modules can run Python; and dependency installation, notebooks, setup scripts, or build steps can perform actions with the permissions of the process running them.

That means a safe-looking filename or a scan result is not enough. A .pt or .bin suffix does not establish that a file is safe, and a scanner is only an additional signal. Hugging Face’s Pickle Scanning documentation describes arbitrary-code risks from pickle deserialization and scanning that includes ClamAV and pickle-import checks. It also advises relying on trusted authors and signed commits or using other formats.
Keep two questions separate: whether the weight file’s format is appropriate, and whether the surrounding repository code should be trusted. Safetensors can address the first question for supported weights; it does not neutralize malicious Python elsewhere in the repository.

Inspect the repository before running anything
Start with a review, not an installation or model-loading command. Identify the exact revision and examine the files and actions that could execute code.
- Identify checkpoint formats and the loader code that will read them. Do not infer safety from an extension.
- Review custom model modules and any code that will be enabled through a remote-code option.
- Inspect dependency manifests, installation instructions, setup scripts, build configuration, notebooks, and repository hooks for commands or side effects.
- Check the repository’s provenance and record the immutable revision you reviewed, such as a commit ID.
- Note what must be downloaded, what outputs will be produced, and which network destinations are actually necessary.
A model card or scanner result can inform this review, but neither proves the full repository or its dependencies are harmless.
Choose a safer weight-loading path
Prefer data-only formats when supported
Prefer safetensors or another data-only representation when the model and loader support it. Hugging Face’s serialization helpers default to safetensors with safe=True; using the pickle path requires opting in with safe=False. Confirm the actual file format and API path used by the code you plan to run.

Treat pickle loading as a code-execution decision
For pickle loading, Hugging Face documents that weights_only=True uses PyTorch’s restricted unpickler where supported. Its documentation says this restricted behavior is absent in PyTorch versions earlier than 1.13. Setting weights_only=False allows arbitrary Python objects and executes arbitrary code at load time. Check both the installed PyTorch version and the exact call site; do not assume every torch.load invocation has the same behavior.
If an unknown publisher provides only a pickle checkpoint and conversion is necessary, perform the conversion inside a disposable isolated environment. Do not load it on a workstation that has access to credentials or valuable files.
Handle custom model code and pin the revision
In Transformers, custom model code is enabled with trust_remote_code=True. The version 4.52.1 model-loading guide advises loading custom models from a specific revision so code cannot silently change between review and execution.

Enable remote code only after inspecting the relevant source and deciding to trust that exact revision. Pin a commit or other immutable revision in the loading configuration, and record the revision and environment used. A branch name or a repository’s latest version can move after you have reviewed it.

Choose an isolation boundary that matches the risk
For higher-risk artifacts, prefer a disposable microVM or similarly strong boundary. Docker’s local Sandboxes documentation describes each sandbox as a lightweight microVM with its own Linux kernel, alongside controls for the hypervisor, network, Docker Engine, workspace, and credentials. This differs from an ordinary container, which shares the host kernel. The guest still gives the agent broad privileges inside its own VM, so isolation also depends on the surrounding controls and what the VM can access.
| Approach | Kernel boundary | Filesystem exposure | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary container | Shares the host kernel. | Depends on configured mounts. | Container isolation is not a separate-kernel boundary; configuration and host exposure matter. |
| Docker local Sandbox | Separate Linux kernel in a lightweight microVM, according to Docker’s documentation. | Can be mountless, use a direct writable mount, or use clone mode with read-only repository source and a private in-VM clone. | Local stdio MCP processes run on the host and do not inherit the VM’s isolation. VM startup, overhead, GPU compatibility, and performance depend on the platform; comparative benchmarks are not stated in Docker’s cited documentation here. |
| Linux namespaces, seccomp, and Landlock | Kernel mechanisms on the host; not a separate guest kernel. | Must be restricted and configured for the intended files and actions. | Landlock provides unprivileged access control. Linux Kernel documentation for version 5.17 cautions that namespaces alone are not designed for fine-grained access control; use layered controls rather than treating one mechanism as a complete sandbox. |
The right choice depends on the artifact and the potential impact of compromise. For lower-risk inspection, carefully configured kernel controls may be useful; for executing unknown code, a separate-kernel boundary reduces reliance on the host kernel being correctly isolated. Neither choice removes the need to control mounts, network access, secrets, and persistence.

Limit what the sandbox can access
Keep the host workspace private
Prefer mountless execution when practical. If source access is needed, use a read-only source mount with a private clone inside the VM rather than a direct writable host mount. Docker documents that a direct mount gives the agent read-write access to the working tree. Clone mode prevents writes from reaching the host repository, but the repository remains readable in the VM, including untracked and ignored files. Keep secrets outside that tree.
A worktree is checkout isolation, not a security boundary. Docker’s headless and CI documentation cautions against running unattended untrusted code without a sandbox. Use an isolated runtime even if the checkout itself is disposable.
Restrict network destinations and credentials
Deny outbound access by default where the platform allows it, then allow only destinations needed for the task. Docker documents outbound network policies for its sandboxes, but a permissive policy can still let code contact external services or exfiltrate any data it can read.

Omit credentials unless strictly required. Review SSH-agent forwarding, mounted credential files, host sockets, signing or authentication agents, shared folders, and host-side integrations as possible paths across the boundary. Docker documents a host-side proxy credential design that can avoid storing raw credential values in the VM; any signing or authentication capability exposed through that design remains a capability the sandbox can use. Local stdio MCP processes are another explicit host-side exception.
Cap resource use and persistence
Set CPU, memory, disk, GPU, process-count, and runtime limits using controls available in the chosen platform. There is no universal set of numeric limits established here: choose limits based on the task and the host’s capacity. Make the environment disposable where possible, and review whether VM, package, image, or workspace state will persist after the run.
A practical run sequence
- Review the artifact: inspect formats, loaders, custom modules, dependencies, notebooks, setup and build steps, and provenance without executing them.
- Fix the inputs: select the reviewed immutable source revision and prefer safetensors or another supported data-only format. If custom code is required, review it before enabling remote code.
- Prepare an isolated environment: use a disposable microVM for higher-risk execution, or carefully configured layered Linux controls where appropriate. Avoid exposing a host workspace, credentials, or integrations the task does not need.
- Apply limits before execution: restrict outbound destinations and set available CPU, memory, disk, GPU, process, and runtime caps. Keep the network disabled if the work does not require it.
- Run only the necessary workflow: load the model or perform the build inside the boundary. Do not move the checkpoint to a trusted host to make loading more convenient.
- Review outputs before reuse: treat generated files, checkpoints, containers, and repository changes as untrusted. Inspect them before transferring them into a trusted environment, and discard disposable state that is no longer needed.
What this workflow does not guarantee
Sandboxing reduces the access available to hostile or compromised code; it does not establish that a repository is benign, make a scanner conclusive, or eliminate every escape or configuration risk. The documented behavior described here is scoped to Linux, Docker’s local sandbox model, and Hugging Face/PyTorch loading guidance. Platform defaults, APIs, and policies can change, so verify the applicable documentation and tool versions before relying on a particular control.
