“Bloatware” is an informal label, not a safety check: a pre-installed app may support core phone features or other apps. Open its page in Settings and use the action the phone actually offers. Choose Uninstall when removal is available and appropriate; choose Disable for a reversible way to stop an app you understand; hide it or remove its Home Screen icon if you only want less clutter. If the app’s role is unclear, leave it alone and check guidance for your exact model and software version.
How to check an app before removing it
- Identify your device. Note its manufacturer, model and operating-system version. App controls and system dependencies vary by phone, software build and region.
- Open the app’s information page. In Settings, find the app list, select the app, and inspect the available actions. Labels and menu paths differ among manufacturers, so use your phone’s Settings search if needed.
- Research the app’s role. Android advises checking an app before deleting or disabling it. A “system app” label does not by itself establish whether removal is safe; the controls offered on your device and official, model-specific guidance are more useful than a generic online removal list. Android warns: “Deleting or disabling system apps can affect other apps or functioning of system.” That is why a phone’s offered action matters more than whether an app looks unnecessary.

Uninstall, disable, hide or leave the app?

Do not assume removing pre-installed apps will produce a particular storage, speed or battery improvement. The official guidance cited here does not quantify a general gain across phones.
What Samsung Galaxy users should know
Samsung’s UK guidance, updated 26 May 2026, says some pre-installed Galaxy apps can be deleted, while Phone, Messages, Contacts, Gallery and My Files are required for basic functions and cannot be deleted under that guidance. For some other apps, the available choice may be to disable or hide them; disabling is not available for every app. These examples describe Samsung Galaxy guidance and should not be treated as a universal Android list. Deleting built-in apps on iPhone or iPad
Apple allows deletion of some built-in apps on iOS 14 or later and iPadOS, but the available apps and effects vary. Deleting a built-in app also removes related user data and configuration files, and Apple warns that this can affect other system functionality or related features. Check Apple’s list and the stated consequences before deleting one: Apple’s guide to deleting built-in Apple apps.
Removing an app from the Home Screen is not the same as deleting it: on iPhone, the app can remain in the App Library. Use the Home Screen option if you want to keep the app installed but out of sight.

Regional availability differs
Apple documents additional built-in app removal options for the European Union and Japan, with prerequisites and consequences that differ by location. In the EU, for example, deleting Messages requires setting up an alternative default messaging app, while deleting the App Store requires an alternative app marketplace. These options are not available everywhere; check Apple’s regional availability and requirements for the current rules that apply to your location.

Android Debug Bridge (ADB) is a command-line developer tool. It can issue commands to a connected device, but its official documentation is not a consumer guide to packages that are safe to remove. A package command may remove an app for a particular user without physically deleting its system image; the result depends on the package, device, Android build and command. Do not treat ADB as a universal “debloat” button or run commands against package names you have not verified.

A USB-connected ADB session requires USB debugging to be enabled in Developer options, and the connection may require a data-capable cable compatible with the phone and computer. Follow Android’s ADB documentation for setup and command details. Before changing a package, use documentation for your exact device and build, understand how to recover the affected feature, and avoid removing core services. For most people, the phone’s Settings controls are the safer route.
