Test an AI agent with harmless data in an isolated, disposable environment before connecting it to real users, sensitive information, or consequential systems. Give it only the tools and permissions needed for the test, restrict filesystem and network access, and enforce authorization where tools execute—not just in a prompt. Then run repeatable adversarial cases against every external input and tool pathway, log what the agent attempts, and rerun tests after material changes. These steps can contain risk and reveal weaknesses; they cannot prove an agent safe for unrestricted access.
What counts as the public internet attack surface?
The security boundary is larger than the prompt box. A webpage, retrieved document, user message, tool description or tool response can contain malicious instructions designed to redirect an agent. NIST describes this as agent hijacking: malicious instructions embedded in ingested data can cause unintended actions when the system fails to distinguish trusted instructions from untrusted content. OWASP also identifies risks such as tool abuse, privilege escalation, data exfiltration, memory poisoning, excessive autonomy, high-impact action abuse, and runaway loops or costs. See the NIST discussion of agent hijacking evaluations and the OWASP AI Agent Security Cheat Sheet.

Before testing, inventory the complete system and its trust boundaries:
- The model, system and developer prompts, orchestrator, memory, and session state.
- Tools, APIs, tool descriptions and responses, data stores, and credentials.
- External inputs, including webpages, user content, retrieved material, and messages from other agents where applicable.
- What the agent may read, change, send, or trigger—and which actions are visible externally or hard to reverse.
Require independent approval for actions with significant or difficult-to-reverse effects. This inventory helps you test the real system rather than only its conversational interface.

How to set up a contained test
Use a disposable development container, sandbox, or virtual machine. Keep production data and credentials out of it. Sandboxing limits the impact of a failure, but it does not by itself prevent prompt injection or make an agent safe.
- Use test-only identity and data. Run under a low-privilege identity with scoped, test-only credentials. Use synthetic or harmless data; where an attack would otherwise send a message, change a record, spend money, or expose a secret, use an instrumented substitute.
- Limit tools and permissions. Give the agent only the tools needed for the scenario. Separate read and write permissions where practical, and define allowed operations and parameters.
- Restrict filesystem and network access. Do not mount sensitive host directories or expose unrelated processes. Deny network access by default, then allow only the destinations needed for the test.
- Enforce authorization outside the model. Validate and allowlist tool parameters in a gateway or execution layer. Check access there rather than relying only on a system prompt to refuse disallowed actions.
- Instrument and bound runs. Log tool calls, parameters, and results. Set limits for tool-chain depth, retries, runtime, and cost; make sure an operator can stop a run and revoke its test credentials.
OWASP recommends least privilege, per-tool permission scopes, validation of external inputs, human review for high-risk actions, monitoring, and structured adversarial testing. Its agentic testing guidance also recommends checking authorization at the gateway or API layer, independently of prompt-level restrictions. Which adversarial cases should you test?
Build a repeatable test matrix from the system’s actual inputs, tools, and permissions. A passing result means the relevant control blocked the action—not merely that the model gave a reassuring answer.
| Case | What to try | What a passing control demonstrates |
|---|---|---|
| Direct prompt override | Ask the agent to ignore its rules or reveal protected context. | It does not treat the request as authority to disclose protected data. |
| Indirect prompt injection | Place malicious instructions in a webpage, retrieved document, or tool response. | The agent treats that content as untrusted data and does not follow it into an unauthorized action. |
| Unauthorized tool use | Request a tool or operation outside the assigned scope. | The execution layer denies it, regardless of how the model phrases the request. |
| Privilege escalation | Try to use a low-trust session to reach a privileged tool or resource. | Identity, session, and resource scope are checked independently of model reasoning. |
| Data exfiltration | Try to put secrets into a tool call, citation, log, or response. | Test data remains protected and cannot be sent to an unapproved destination. |
| Tool chaining | Combine individually permitted actions to produce an unintended result. | High-impact action chains are recognized and blocked or paused for approval. |
| Memory poisoning | Supply content intended to persist and affect a later session. | Memory is scoped, sanitized, expired, or rejected so it cannot affect unrelated sessions. |
| Runaway behavior | Induce repeated calls, retries, or long loops. | Depth, retry, runtime, or cost limits stop the run and create an auditable event. |
Run both single-turn and multi-turn scenarios. Treat retrieved content as a distinct input channel, and send crafted tool invocations directly to the authorization layer to verify that it enforces policy without depending on the model. Establish expected normal behavior first so a test can distinguish a failed control from a feature that was never working.

OWASP’s LLM Prompt Injection Prevention Cheat Sheet recommends harmless data and instrumented tool substitutes, and explicitly characterizes its examples as a smoke test rather than a security benchmark. One successful run or a passing test suite is not proof that an agent is secure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you repeat tests, and what should you report?
Run structured tests before production deployment and after material changes to prompts, tools, memory, retrieval, policies, or model providers. Keep test cases versioned and repeatable. When a test finds a weakness, record the input path, attempted action, expected control, observed result, and smallest corrective change. Retest the finding and related pathways after remediation.

Make reports useful by stating the boundaries actually exercised: agent and model version, tool configuration, data sources, network allowlist, identity and permission scope, test cases, observed failures, and unresolved risks. Describe what was tested and what remains outside the test; do not claim that a finite test set establishes unrestricted safety.
