Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not try to start a large diesel engine that has been idle for years until you have identified it and followed its own current service instructions. “Large diesel” is not a procedure: the safe steps depend on the engine model, configuration, and how it was stored. If its history or condition is unknown, have a qualified heavy-diesel technician inspect it before cranking.
Identify the engine and find its instructions
Record the make, model, serial number, and configuration, then obtain the current operating and service instructions for that exact engine. A procedure for one model is not a safe substitute for another. For example, the cited instructions for a Cummins N14, MTU C13, and Detroit Series 60 differ; use them only for the engines they cover, and verify older or third-party-hosted material against the manufacturer’s current documentation.

Establish what happened during storage before deciding what service is needed:
- How long was it idle, and was it prepared or preserved for storage?
- Were the intake, exhaust, or other openings sealed, and are the covers or plugs still in place?
- What fuel remains, and could the engine or fuel system have been exposed to water, freezing, or contamination?
- Were fluids drained, parts removed, or repairs left unfinished?
Perkins advises owners to consult the engine’s operation and maintenance manual or contact a distributor for more information about an engine not in use. Its storage guidance also warns that biodiesel left in the fuel system can attract moisture, bacteria, and fungi, potentially causing restart problems. Perkins storage guidance
#1 Best Overall
- Full synthetic 15W-40 diesel engine oil with Triple Protection Plus technology protects against wear, deposits, and oil breakdown
- Formulated to deliver increased protection against oxidation and enhanced deposit control/cleanliness
- Better cold cranking properties and low-temperature pumpability (compared to conventional and synthetic blend 15W-40 motor oil)
- Improved wear performance versus API CJ-4 technology
- Compatibility with exhaust emissions control systems
Inspect before connecting power or cranking
Secure the machine as its manual directs, then inspect the engine and the area around it. Look for corrosion, leaks, damaged hoses, loose or degraded wiring and connections, water, debris, animal nests, and anything that could obstruct an opening or moving component. Check the air intake, exhaust, fuel lines, filters, and surrounding area.
Remove storage covers and plugs only as directed by the engine instructions, and account for every item removed. Detroit Series 60 restoration guidance specifically includes removing covers from openings and warns against overlooking the exhaust opening. It also calls for restoring fuel connections and correctly assembling the air cleaner. Detroit Series 60 restoration procedure
If you find water in the engine or intake, significant corrosion, damaged components, an unexplained blockage, or evidence of contamination, stop and arrange a professional inspection. Do not try to clear an unknown obstruction by cranking.

Use the specifications and sequence in the exact engine manual. Do not guess the oil grade, coolant chemistry, filter part numbers, fuel treatment, or priming method based on another diesel engine.

The examples below illustrate why the model-specific instructions matter; they are not a combined checklist for every engine:
| Engine and cited instructions | What those instructions call for | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Cummins N14 long-term storage procedure | New oil, fuel, and coolant filters; filling the oil; and priming the lubrication system as part of that procedure. | Specific to the cited N14 procedure. The instructions are hosted on a third-party manual site; confirm them against the current manual for the engine’s serial number. |
| MTU C13 instructions | Check oil and coolant; replace coolant if the engine has been out of service for more than one year. | Specific to the cited MTU manual page, which reproduces manual M015695/03E dated 2013. Verify the applicable current instructions. |
Assess old fuel rather than assuming it must always be drained or can always be kept. Follow the engine manual for checking water, cleaning the tank, changing filters, selecting fuel, and priming the fuel system. If the service requirements or fuel condition are unclear, get help from a qualified technician before proceeding.
Make the starting area safe
- Use a well-ventilated location. If the engine is in an enclosed installation, route exhaust outside; never run it where exhaust can accumulate.
- Keep flames, sparks, pilot lights, and other ignition sources away from fuel and the fuel system. Clean up spills before starting.
- Have suitable fire protection available and follow site-specific safety rules. Cummins’ generator operator manual, issue 12 (2024), says, “Keep a type ABC fire extinguisher handy,” and warns about ignition sources around fuel. Cummins generator operator manual
Crank and start only in the prescribed sequence
Once the inspection and model-specific service are complete, follow the manual’s exact starting procedure. Some engines require lubrication or fuel-system preparation in a particular order; do not assume the same sequence applies to mechanical and electronic systems.
Do not use starting fluid unless the instructions for the exact engine explicitly allow it and explain how. Caterpillar warns that excessive starting-fluid use can cause catastrophic engine failure and fire or explosion injury. Caterpillar diesel checklist

- Synthetic blend 15W-40 diesel engine oil with Triple Protection Plus technology protects against wear, deposits, and oil breakdown
- Ideal for on-highway fleets, construction, and agricultural machinery, and diesel pickup trucks — including high-power vehicles that require resistance to heat and stress
- Triple Protection Plus technology offers better low-temperature flow, which delivers excellent equipment protection, long engine life, and maintains viscosity control under high temperatures
- Delivers good engine cleanliness and protection against piston deposits, ensuring engine and component reliability at extended oil drain intervals
- Advanced low-ash formulation helps control the blocking or poisoning of exhaust after-treatment devices, helping maintain vehicle emission compliance and engine fuel efficiency
Respect the cranking limit and rest period in the engine’s own manual. Caterpillar’s winter checklist says not to crank for more than 30 seconds at a time; the cited Cummins N14 storage procedure also sets a 30-second maximum in its own context. Neither figure should be treated as a universal limit for other engines. Stop if it fails to start within the permitted attempts or shows an abnormal symptom; investigate rather than repeatedly cranking.
Monitor the engine and return it to service cautiously
During and after startup, watch the gauges, warnings, and diagnostic indications specified by the manufacturer. Check for leaks, unusual noise, abnormal smoke, overheating, or other unexpected behavior. If anything is wrong, shut down if safe to do so and follow the manual’s fault guidance; do not proceed to load operation.
Do not race the engine or apply load immediately. Detroit Series 60 restoration guidance advises reaching normal operating temperature before load or high speed and checking diagnostic codes. Apply that instruction only to the engine it covers; use the target engine’s own warm-up and return-to-load requirements. Detroit Series 60 restoration procedure

Arrange a qualified heavy-diesel inspection before cranking if the engine identity or storage history cannot be established, the engine’s manual is unavailable, its condition raises concern, or the required service procedure is beyond your training or equipment. A technician can determine what inspection and preparation are appropriate for that engine rather than applying another model’s steps by analogy.
