Before selling, trading in, donating, or recycling a phone, tablet, computer, or other personal device, back up and verify what you need, confirm you can access important accounts without it, remove cards and account links, then erase the device using the maker’s instructions. After that, document the real item accurately. AI can help organize verified details into a listing, but it cannot establish the device’s condition or replace honest inspection.
1. Back up what you need before erasing
Make a list of the data and access you want to keep: photos, files, messages, passwords, authenticator access, payment cards, and important app or account information. Back up the data, then check from another device that the backup is accessible before you erase the one you plan to transfer. The FTC advises removing personal information before getting rid of a phone, and Apple’s preparation guidance puts backup before erasure (FTC phone guidance; Apple device preparation).

Do not use manual deletion of individual files as a substitute for erasing the device. Apple warns that deleting items while signed in to iCloud can also remove them from iCloud and other connected devices. For computers, the FTC likewise cautions that deleting files alone may not fully remove them (FTC phone guidance; FTC computer guidance).

Before resetting, make sure you can sign in to essential accounts without relying on the device being sold. Plan how to move or reactivate authenticator apps, and update accounts that use the device’s phone number if that number is changing. The FTC specifically warns that authenticator apps may need reactivation and advises updating phone numbers associated with accounts when changing numbers (FTC phone guidance; FTC phone-upgrade alert).

Check whether the phone is the only way you manage a smart-home device or another connected product. Confirm you can control it elsewhere, or transfer its management, before erasure. The UK National Cyber Security Centre recommends checking account access and smart-device control before wiping a device (NCSC guidance on buying and selling used devices).
3. Remove cards and unlink accounts
- Remove the physical SIM and any SD or other removable storage card, if present.
- Sign out of or deregister accounts as required by the device maker and the receiving trade-in program. Account locks and menus vary by device and operating-system version.
- For an iPhone or iPad, review Find My and Activation Lock, Apple Pay, and iMessage if you are moving to a different platform. Follow Apple’s directions for eSIM handling; if prompted during erasure, choose whether to erase the eSIM according to whether you are transferring that service or keeping it.
- For Android devices, use the manufacturer’s instructions and check any trade-in provider’s account-removal requirements.
Apple says erasing an iPhone or iPad turns off Find My and Activation Lock; its transfer directions also cover AppleCare and other device-specific considerations (Apple device preparation). A trade-in provider may have additional requirements: Amazon’s electronics criteria, for example, address matching the selected model or version, ownership, account deregistration, and functionality (Amazon Electronics Condition Criteria).

4. Erase using the maker’s instructions
Use the manufacturer’s erase or factory-reset procedure for the exact device model and software version. Depending on the device, that may be called “Erase All Content and Settings,” a factory reset, or a computer-based erase. Do not rely on deleting files one by one. The FTC recommends restoring or resetting phones and says computer deletion alone may not fully remove files; the NCSC also recommends a factory reset for a device being transferred (FTC phone guidance; NCSC guidance; FTC computer guidance).
A reset is standard consumer guidance, not a guarantee that no data could ever be recovered. The NCSC cautions that “A determined expert – using specialist tools – may still be able to recover the data on a device.” If the device contains especially sensitive information, managed work data, or records subject to legal retention or an organization’s disposal rules, follow the applicable specialist or organizational sanitization requirements rather than assuming an ordinary reset is sufficient.

5. Record the device’s real condition
Before listing or submitting a trade-in, note the exact model and storage or configuration where known, whether it is carrier-locked or unlocked if you can verify that, its power and battery behavior, screen and body condition, faults, repairs, and the accessories actually included. Test functions you plan to describe, and disclose defects. Use clear photos of the actual device so a buyer can judge its condition; FTC guidance says marketplace protections and policies differ, so review the rules for the platform you use (FTC online-shopping guidance; Amazon electronics criteria).
6. Choose a sale, trade-in, donation, or recycling route
Compare the options on the factors that matter for your item and circumstances. A private sale, trade-in, donation, and recycling can differ in expected net value, time and effort, eligibility, whether payment is cash or credit, and transaction protections. No universal current price comparison establishes that a private sale always pays more. A trade-in’s acceptance and value depend on the specific program and device; Amazon’s criteria are one example, and an item that misses requirements may be downgraded or rejected (Amazon Electronics Condition Criteria).

7. Use AI to draft, not to certify, a listing
AI can turn your verified notes into a clearer description, propose a neutral title, or flag details you still need to confirm. Review every factual claim yourself. Do not let it infer battery health, hidden damage, repair history, storage capacity, carrier status, or which accessories are in the box. Take and use photos of the actual device; a generated image that makes the item look different can mislead a buyer. This approach is consistent with FTC advice to inspect the item’s photos and description and Amazon’s requirement that listing images represent the product accurately (FTC online-shopping guidance; Amazon image requirements).
