What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Yes, but only force a restart as a last resort. If Windows still responds, save your work, keep the PC powered and connected, and use Windows Update’s normal troubleshooting and restart options. A progress percentage that has not changed does not by itself mean the update is frozen: Microsoft says installation time varies with update size, connection speed, and network settings, and gives no universal safe-to-interrupt wait time.
Before you do anything: protect your work and power
- If you can reach the desktop, save open files and close applications.
- Back up important personal files before troubleshooting. Microsoft suggests copying files to a USB drive as one option; the drive is for backup, not a special repair tool. Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance says to back up personal files before trying its solutions.
- Plug the PC into reliable power and check that it has an internet connection, especially if troubleshooting requires downloading or installing updates.
What do I do if Windows Update is stuck?
Start with the least disruptive option that matches the state of the computer. If Windows is responsive, use the Windows Update troubleshooter and the normal update restart flow. If the display is blank or the whole PC is unresponsive, consult Microsoft’s blank-screen instructions rather than treating every slow progress screen as a reason to cut power.

| PC state | First choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Windows responds and the update is pending a restart | Save work, close apps, then choose Update and restart or Update and shut down. | This is the normal Windows update workflow. |
| Windows responds but update installation seems stuck | Run the troubleshooter for your Windows version and follow Microsoft’s update-specific steps. | A static percentage alone does not establish that Windows has stopped working. |
| Screen is blank or the PC is genuinely unresponsive | Check the display and power connections, then use the relevant blank-screen guidance; a forced restart is a fallback. | The power-button procedure is for an unresponsive/blank-screen situation, not a standard response to a slow update. |
| Windows will not start after restarting | Use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), beginning with less disruptive recovery options. | Recovery choices can affect files or settings, so check backup and BitLocker readiness. |
Windows 11: start with Get Help
Open Get Help and run the Windows Update troubleshooter. If it does not resolve the problem, continue with Microsoft’s problem-specific or general update troubleshooting steps. Microsoft’s current update guidance identifies Get Help as the Windows 11 starting point. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting steps.
Windows 10: use the Settings troubleshooter
For Windows 10, use the Windows Update troubleshooter path in Settings described on Microsoft’s support page; labels and navigation can differ by Windows version. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025, so it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. Check Microsoft’s applicable instructions.

Use the orderly update restart
When Windows offers an update restart, save your work, close open apps, then select Start > Power > Update and restart or Update and shut down. Do not confuse this planned restart with cutting power while an update is actively installing. Microsoft recommends saving work and closing applications before applying updates.
How long should I wait for Windows Update?
There is no Microsoft-backed universal number of minutes after which every update percentage is safe to interrupt. Microsoft says download and installation time depends on connection speed, network settings, and the size of the update. Its troubleshooting guidance covers cases such as installations stuck at 0%, 100%, or between 51% and 99%; it recommends checking connection status and available disk space for some stuck cases, and trying the troubleshooter or checking for updates again where applicable. Read Microsoft’s update troubleshooting guidance.
If Windows remains responsive, follow the version-appropriate troubleshooter and update steps instead of using an arbitrary countdown. If the screen is blank, first check display and power connections and use guidance for that symptom. A forced shutdown interrupts the running session and may leave Windows needing recovery; Microsoft’s cited guidance does not quantify the risk of file damage for every device and update, so neither assume interruption is harmless nor that it will necessarily corrupt Windows.
How do I force restart my PC during an update?
Reserve a forced restart for a genuinely blank or unresponsive PC, not an update that merely appears slow. Microsoft’s blank-screen article says to hold the power button for 20 seconds to force a restart. These instructions are specific to blank-screen troubleshooting; follow your manufacturer’s device guidance if it differs. Microsoft’s blank-screen troubleshooting guide has additional steps.

If the screen remains blank after the initial step, Microsoft describes a recovery route: hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown, repeat two or three times until Windows enters Recovery Mode, then choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart. This is an advanced blank-screen path, not a routine way to interrupt an update that is still progressing.

Use WinRE’s recovery options, starting with the least disruptive choice that fits what happened. If the problem began after a recent update, Microsoft lists Uninstall updates as an option. More extensive options, such as resetting or reinstalling Windows, can have greater consequences; Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can result in data loss and recommends backing up important files. If BitLocker is enabled, you may need its recovery key to access most WinRE options. See Microsoft’s Windows recovery options.
One Windows 11 update behavior is version- and rollout-dependent
Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 article describes a gradual rollout for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1 associated with updates released on and after July 28, 2026. For some users, certain updates requiring a restart may be grouped with the monthly security update, while some updates still install right away. This does not mean every PC has the behavior; availability depends on version and rollout. Read Microsoft’s Windows Update information.
