When a multiplayer quiz room ends, save its final state first, then publish any completion event, stop room activity, and explicitly remove the client’s channel. Treat removal as a connection-lifecycle step—not proof that scores were saved or every player received the event. On unexpected disconnects, log the status, recover with bounded backoff, and reload the authoritative room state after reconnecting.
What channel removal does—and what it does not do
In Supabase Realtime, a channel is a topic-named room for features such as Broadcast, Presence, and Postgres Changes. The protocol’s phx_leave message tells the server the client is leaving a channel; the SDK’s channel-removal API also removes that channel from the client. Supabase describes leaving as a way to clean up resources or stop listening for events on a channel in its Realtime Protocol documentation.

Removal does not commit final scores, guarantee delivery of a final event, or establish that every peer has left. Those are application-level responsibilities. Store authoritative answers, scores, and round status durably, and use an application acknowledgement if you need confirmation that a player processed a completion event.
Supabase’s Swift reference says it automatically handles cleanup 30 seconds after a client disconnects, while warning that unused channels may degrade performance as simultaneous subscriptions grow. That is a fallback, not a reason to leave completed rooms subscribed: explicitly remove channels when their local lifecycle ends. The 30-second statement is documented in the Swift channel-removal reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use an ordered room-ending lifecycle
- Persist the result. Write final answers, scores, and the room’s completed status to the authoritative application store. Do not make a transient channel event the only record of the result.
- Publish completion while joined. Send the room-finished event before removing the channel. If the application needs to know that a client received or processed it, require an explicit acknowledgement rather than treating a successful send call as proof.
- Stop local activity and remove the channel. Stop quiz timers and listeners, then invoke the channel-removal operation exposed by the client SDK. The cited removal API is for Swift; check the equivalent API and lifecycle details in the SDK and version your game uses.
- Make teardown idempotent. Room completion, view unmount, player departure, and disconnect handling can overlap. Ensure repeated cleanup calls do not corrupt local state or create rapid rejoin loops.
- Reconcile after reconnect. Read the durable room status and derive whether the game is active, complete, or expired. Presence can describe who appears connected, but should not be the source of score truth.
Choose recovery by the failure signal
Do not handle every closure as a retry. Supabase distinguishes clean closure from channel-process errors and documents status callbacks such as CLOSED and TIMED_OUT. The correct response depends on whether the room should still be active and whether the cause is transient, correctable, or operational.
| Signal or failure | Meaning | Response |
|---|---|---|
phx_leave |
The client is leaving a channel and stopping its event listening. | Use SDK cleanup when the room or view lifecycle ends. |
phx_close without a preceding error |
A clean close. | Do not reconnect unless the application expected the channel to remain active. |
phx_error |
An unexpected server-side channel-process termination. | Rejoin with exponential backoff if the room should still be active. |
CLOSED or TIMED_OUT |
A status that may be expected or may reflect a real disconnect. | Log the callback and reconnect only when the state is unexpected for the room’s lifecycle. |
| Join rate limit | Join throughput has reached a limit. | Back off and reduce join frequency; investigate rapid room remounts. |
| Expired token | Authentication is stale. | Refresh authentication, then rejoin. The protocol supports in-band token refresh for private channels. |
| Invalid JWT or configuration | A credentials or setup problem, not a transient disconnect. | Correct the cause instead of retrying blindly. |
JanitorFailedToDeleteOldMessages |
A scheduled Realtime message-cleanup task failed. | Treat it as a service operational issue; the error guidance does not establish a client-side room-removal fix. |
SubscriptionCleanupFailed or SubscriptionDeletionFailed |
The subscription manager could not clean up or delete a subscription. | Inspect project logs and operational health. Repeating client removal is not documented as a repair for this backend condition. |
For server-side operational error definitions, see Supabase’s Operational Error Codes. Log the status, room identifier, and relevant error message so reconnects can be distinguished from configuration or service issues.

Set bounded reconnect and heartbeat behavior
The Realtime Protocol documents a heartbeat cadence of at least every 25 seconds to avoid timeout. It also documents this JavaScript-client reconnect schedule: 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, then 10,000 milliseconds, capped at 10 seconds. The client can configure the schedule through reconnectAfterMs. These are documented values, not a guarantee that every SDK or version uses identical defaults; confirm them against the client you deploy.

Check delivery and subscription setup before blaming deletion
Broadcast delivery can fail without a useful send error
Supabase’s protocol says private-channel broadcast acknowledgements are disabled by default. With acknowledgements off, some push failures—including payload-size violations and row-level security write denials—may be silently dropped. With acknowledgements enabled, the JavaScript client’s send() still resolves to the string error without exposing the specific error atom. A send result is therefore not an application-level receipt from each player.
For private Broadcast channels, the sending client needs the relevant insert permission and receivers need select permission. Also verify that every participant uses the exact same topic: a typo, casing difference, or independently generated room ID can prevent delivery. These troubleshooting points are covered in Supabase’s Realtime messages troubleshooting guide.

Keep Presence and high-frequency game updates in their proper roles
Presence is suited to slow-changing state such as who is in a room, not high-frequency quiz updates. Supabase’s current error guidance recommends Broadcast for frequent updates or throttling Presence tracking calls. Durable game state should remain in the application store.

Verify Postgres Changes subscriptions
If the game uses Postgres Changes, check the subscription status, filters, publication membership, and authorization. Supabase notes that DELETE events are not RLS-filtered because the row has already been deleted; do not assume row-level security will filter those events in the same way as other changes.

Keep message cleanup separate from room and score retention
Supabase documents a cleanup process that deletes realtime.messages tables older than three days. That is maintenance for Realtime’s message storage, not a room expiration rule or a guarantee about how long final quiz scores are retained. Set room and score retention in the application’s own data model and policies. See Realtime Concepts for the channel and message-table context.
