Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Before installing a third-party package on a Synology NAS, verify who made it and where it came from, confirm it supports your exact DSM version and NAS model, and understand what data and access it needs. Then check how it is maintained and updated. DSM’s publisher settings are installation gates, not guarantees that a package is safe: Synology says it cannot completely verify third-party packages’ claims or practices.
Start with the developer and the package’s source
Identify the developer, exact package name and version, intended purpose, and the URL from which you plan to install it. Prefer documentation on the developer’s own website. If you use a repository, confirm that the developer links to it from its official site or documentation; do not rely on a copied URL or an unverified forum post. Synology’s Package Center installation instructions explain that a third-party repository URL may need to be obtained from the developer’s website. Synology also documents manual installation using an uploaded .spk file.

For either route, check that the download host and package are consistent with the developer’s published instructions. A package being available to download, or appearing in a community repository, does not by itself establish who produced it or whether it is current.
Understand what DSM’s publisher setting does
DSM’s trust-level choices include Synology Inc. only, Synology Inc. and trusted publishers, and Any publisher. The cited Synology help page for DSM 6 defines the last choice as: “Any publisher: Allow installation of any package regardless of publisher and integrity.” This is a permissive installation setting, not a way to verify an individual package. See Synology’s Configure Package Center (DSM 6) guidance.

A trusted-publisher status can indicate that a publisher’s community source was added or that its certificate was imported. Treat it as one identity signal—not proof that the software behaves harmlessly, handles data appropriately, or is still maintained. Use the narrowest trust setting that permits the package you intend to install. If an exception is necessary, restore the more restrictive setting afterward if your DSM version allows it. DSM labels and available controls can vary by version.
Review privacy, access, and terms
Read the package’s privacy notice, EULA, and terms of use or service. Look for disclosures about data collection, telemetry, remote access, account requirements, and payments. Ask whether the package’s requested access makes sense for its stated function, and whether the developer explains what information leaves the NAS and why.

Synology warns that third-party packages may collect information about the user or device and says it cannot completely verify their claims or practices. Its Services Data Collection Disclosure makes that limitation explicit. Synology’s Package Center Terms and Conditions also state that the license relationship for a third-party package is between the user and its developer. If the package’s data handling or access needs are unclear, defer installation and ask the developer rather than treating uncertainty as evidence of safety.

Check the developer’s current documentation for support of your exact NAS model and DSM version. Synology says Package Center lists packages compatible with the user’s storage system, but that does not guarantee compatibility for every package installed manually. A listing or download page can also become outdated, so compare it with the developer’s current support information.

- 2-Year Warranty - Reliable hardware backed by Synology's expert customer support team and ongoing software updates
Check the developer’s release history, how it announces security fixes, and whether it responds to security issues. A package remaining downloadable does not show that it is maintained. Consider whether its update cadence and support are adequate for what you plan to use it for; an unsupported package is a poor choice for a security-sensitive task.
Validate a manually downloaded package when possible
If you download an .spk manually, use the developer’s documented signature-verification process or compare a cryptographic hash with a value published through an authenticated developer channel. Follow the developer’s instructions for the specific package and verification method; there is no single validation workflow established for every third-party Synology package.

A checksum only helps establish integrity when the reference value is trustworthy. A hash obtained from the same untrusted mirror as the file is not independent proof of authenticity. General software supply-chain guidance from the Enduring Security Framework and CISA recommends documented signature validation and checks of authenticity, integrity, and trust chains; it does not mean every Synology package has a signature or published hash. See the ESF/CISA recommended practices. If no trustworthy validation material exists, treat that as unresolved risk in your decision.

Plan for updates and removal before installing
Find out how updates are delivered and how to uninstall the package. If you added a repository or imported a certificate for it, know how to remove that trust when it is no longer needed. DSM 7 includes update notifications and automatic-update controls; Synology describes “important” updates as versions that fix critical bugs or security vulnerabilities. Consult the version-specific Configure Package Center (DSM 7) instructions because options may differ by DSM version.

Synology says beta versions let users try new features before official release and “are not recommended for commercial use.” Before making a consequential change, a current backup is prudent general NAS administration; it is not a package-specific procedure prescribed by the cited Synology instructions.
After installation, follow developer announcements and DSM update notices. Reassess the package if its source disappears, support ends, or its behavior or access requirements change unexpectedly. Stop using it while you evaluate the impact and a safe removal path.
Make the install, defer, or reject decision
| Decision | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Install | The developer and distribution source are credible; your exact NAS and DSM combination is supported; the package’s purpose, data practices, and access needs are clear; maintenance is adequate for your use; and available integrity checks pass. |
| Defer | A material question remains about source authenticity, compatibility, data collection, required access, or maintenance. Ask the developer or wait for clearer documentation instead of widening DSM’s trust setting as a shortcut. |
| Reject | The package comes from an unverified mirror, the developer cannot be established, access is unexplained, its privacy or licensing terms do not meet your needs, or it is no longer maintained despite a security-sensitive use case. |
If you are comparing candidates, assess each against the same criteria: developer identity and distribution provenance; NAS and DSM compatibility; signature or other integrity evidence; privacy and access requirements; maintenance and security update history; and license and support terms. The cited sources do not establish a numerical scoring system, so use explicit criteria rather than an invented risk score.
