To flush a gas water heater, shut off its gas heat source using the procedure in its manual, let the water cool, drain and flush the tank as that model’s instructions specify, then refill it completely before relighting. Gas controls and flushing methods vary by model, so use the heater’s manual and appliance labels—not a generic restart procedure.
Before you start: check the manual and prepare
Find the heater’s model number and read its maintenance and lighting instructions. Whirlpool says its online draining instructions supplement the printed owner’s manual; the manual and labels on your own heater take precedence. If you cannot identify the correct gas shutoff or restart procedure, stop and ask a qualified water-heater technician.

- A garden hose that fits the drain valve

How to flush the tank
- Turn off the gas heat source as the manual directs. The cited A. O. Smith residential gas manual specifies using the manual gas shutoff valve; do not assume every heater has the same control layout or procedure.
- Cool the water. Open a nearby hot-water faucet and let it run until the water is no longer hot. Whirlpool advises ensuring the water runs cool before draining to reduce scald risk.
- Close the cold-water inlet and connect the hose. Attach the garden hose to the tank’s drain valve and route its other end to the suitable drain or safe discharge location. Keep people clear of the hose outlet.
- Drain the tank. Open the drain valve. Opening a hot-water faucet can admit air and help the tank drain faster. Follow the manual’s directions for draining.
- Flush using the method for your model. Continue until sediment no longer comes out or the water runs clear, as the manual directs. Manufacturers differ on whether to restore the cold supply during flushing; do not combine steps from different models.
- Close the drain valve and remove the hose as directed. If sediment stops the flow or the valve leaks, do not force it. Stop and contact a qualified technician.
- Refill before restarting. Restore the cold-water supply, open hot-water taps as needed to purge air, and wait for a steady flow. Only then restart the heater according to its lighting instructions. Do not relight or operate it while the tank is empty.
Why the flushing steps can differ
The core safety sequence is consistent, but the details are not universal. For example, Whirlpool describes turning the cold supply back on after draining and flushing until clear. GE describes flushing with the tank empty by briefly applying cold supply through the open drain, repeating until clear. Use only the method specified for your heater.

How often should you flush it?
There is no single interval established here for every gas water heater. Follow your exact model’s maintenance schedule; these manufacturer recommendations illustrate why a universal interval should not be assumed.

When to stop and get help
- The manual is unavailable and you are unsure how to shut off or restart the gas controls.
- The drain valve will not drain because sediment is blocking it.
- The drain valve leaks or you cannot safely direct the discharge.
- You cannot confirm the tank is full and air has been purged before restarting.
Whirlpool recommends qualified help when the tank will not drain. Do not force a stuck valve or proceed with a restart you are uncertain about.
