How to safely disable or uninstall pre-installed apps on a Google Pixel

Use Disable for supported pre-installed Pixel apps, Uninstall for apps you installed, and Remove for Home-screen clutter. Follow these Pixel-safe steps and recovery checks.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a pre-installed Pixel app, use Settings > Apps > All apps, open the app’s page, and tap Disable when Google offers that control. For an app you installed yourself, use the Play Store’s uninstall flow. If you only want to clear an icon, remove it from the Home screen instead; that does not delete the app. The exact labels can differ by Pixel model and Android release, so use the wording shown on your phone.

What “disable,” “uninstall,” and “remove” actually do

These actions are not interchangeable. Choosing the wrong one can leave an app running, erase its local data, or prompt you to make a change that your Pixel does not support.

Action Use it when What happens Can you reverse it?
Disable The app came with the phone and its App info page offers the control The system turns off the app rather than deleting the pre-installed package. It may no longer appear or run normally. Usually. Reopen the app’s page and choose Enable if that button is available.
Uninstall You installed the app, or the app page explicitly permits removal The app is removed from the phone. Its local data may also be removed. Yes. Google says deleted or disabled apps can be added back; a purchased app can be installed again without buying it again.
Remove from Home screen You only want to hide an icon Removes the shortcut from the Home screen while leaving the app installed. Yes. Find the app in the app drawer and add its icon again.
Factory data reset Advanced troubleshooting after other remedies fail Erases all phone data and apps, not just one unwanted app. Only by restoring your backup and reinstalling content.

Google’s Pixel documentation says some system apps cannot be deleted, but most can be disabled. That is why a missing Disable button is a restriction, not an invitation to try an internet package-removal recipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why the distinction matters

Disabling is the normal supported choice for many apps that shipped with the phone. It leaves the system package in place but prevents ordinary operation. Uninstalling is primarily for apps added by you through the Play Store or another supported installation method. Removing an icon changes only the launcher’s shortcut. A factory reset affects the entire phone and is unrelated to ordinary decluttering.

Do not judge an app solely by whether you recognize its icon. A component you never open can still provide a feature used by another app. The safest decision comes from the control shown on that app’s own App info page, not from a generic list copied from a different Pixel or Android release.

Before changing a pre-installed app

  • Identify the app’s role. Read its name, description, permissions and recent activity. A component with “Android,” “Google,” “System,” “telephony,” “media,” or “setup” in its name may support another feature even if you never open it directly.
  • Record anything you may need later. If the app stores downloads, drafts, offline maps, messages or settings, export or back up that content before disabling or uninstalling it.
  • Check the Android version. Google’s instructions are not identical on every release. The Play Store steps below note Android 13 and later for some screens, while Settings labels can vary across Pixel generations.
  • Change one app at a time. If a feature stops working, you will know which change to undo.
  • Check whether you need its notifications. Disabling or allowing Android to pause an app can stop alerts and background work. Make sure that trade-off is intentional.
  • Do not use a factory reset for routine decluttering. A reset erases the phone and requires a backup first.

Before confirming, note the app’s current permissions and notification settings. This gives you a useful baseline if you later restore it. If the app is tied to a feature you rely on, consider changing a permission or its unused-app setting instead of disabling the whole package.

How to disable a pre-installed app safely

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Apps, then All apps. On some Android versions you may need to tap a menu or filter before the complete list appears.
  3. Scroll to the pre-installed app, or use the list’s search control, and tap its name.
  4. Read the App info screen. Check its permissions, notifications and storage details so you know what the change affects.
  5. Tap Disable, if the button is present, and confirm the warning.

A disabled app no longer behaves like an enabled app. Its notifications and background activity may stop, and features that depend on it can disappear. The supported way to test the change is to use the phone normally, then return to the same App info page and tap Enable if something you need is affected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to test afterward

Use the phone for the task that motivated the change, then check ordinary functions such as calls, mobile data, notifications, camera access, Bluetooth and account syncing. You do not need to test every feature immediately, but a short, deliberate check can reveal a dependency before you forget which app you changed. If a warning or missing feature appears, restore the app rather than disabling another package to compensate.

When Disable is unavailable

Some pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted, and Google does not publish one universal “safe to disable” list for every Pixel model, Android version and personal setup. If the control is missing or greyed out, leave the app enabled unless you have a specific, documented reason and understand the dependency. Do not substitute an ADB command, a package-name list or a third-party “debloater” simply because a web guide says the app is harmless on another phone.

The absence of a control is useful information: Pixel is protecting a package or does not support that operation for the current configuration. It is not evidence that a hidden removal method is required. If clutter is the only problem, remove the Home-screen shortcut instead.

  1. Open the Play Store.
  2. Tap your profile icon in the upper-right corner.
  3. Choose Manage apps and devices, then Manage.
  4. In the list, select the app you want to remove. If necessary, change the list filter so installed apps are shown.
  5. Tap Uninstall and confirm.

Some of these screens are documented for Android 13 and later, and wording can vary. If the Play Store does not show an uninstall option, return to Settings > Apps > All apps and inspect the app’s page. A pre-installed package may offer only Disable, not uninstall.

After uninstalling, the app no longer appears as an installed app, but its listing and ownership remain associated with the relevant Google account. That is why a purchased app can be installed again without paying for it again. Use the account that originally obtained the app when you look for it in your library.

Uninstall versus Remove

Pixel battery guidance uses these terms precisely: Uninstall removes the app from the phone; Remove takes the icon off the Home screen only. If your goal is a cleaner Home screen, long-press the icon and choose the Home-screen removal option rather than uninstalling the app.

Removing a shortcut does not stop notifications, background activity or permissions because the app remains installed. It is therefore the least disruptive option and the right first step when appearance, not behavior, is the issue.

How to restore an app

Re-enable a disabled system app

  1. Open Settings > Apps > All apps.
  2. Find the disabled app. Depending on the Android version, you may need to use an “All apps” filter or a disabled-app filter.
  3. Open the app’s page and tap Enable.

Restart the phone if a dependent feature does not immediately return. If the app’s data or permissions were reset, review them on the same page.

Reinstall an uninstalled app

Open the Play Store, tap your profile icon, choose Manage apps and devices > Manage, switch the list to apps that are not installed, select the app and tap Install. Google says a purchased app can be installed again without purchasing it again, provided you use the account that originally obtained it.

If you cannot see the app, verify the list filter and Google account before assuming it is gone permanently. A disabled pre-installed app is restored from Settings; an uninstalled user app is restored through the Play Store. Those are separate recovery paths.

If you are trying to fix battery drain

Disabling an app is not a guaranteed battery cure. First identify what is actually using power:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings > Battery and review Battery usage.
  2. Open the suspected app’s entry and inspect its foreground and background activity.
  3. On the app’s settings page, review its battery or background-use setting. Google generally recommends leaving battery use on Optimized.
  4. Check whether the phone has just been set up, reset or updated. Google says optimization can take a few weeks to settle after a new Pixel setup or factory reset, and a software update can temporarily increase drain while software is downloaded and optimized.

Pixel 6 and later include battery diagnostics that can help separate normal temporary activity from a persistent problem. Use those results before disabling an unfamiliar component.

Look at timing as well as the percentage shown. A newly set-up or recently updated phone may be downloading and optimizing software in the background. That temporary work does not prove that a pre-installed app is defective. Give optimization time, keep the battery setting on Optimized unless you have a specific reason to change it, and make one reversible change at a time.

Do not force-stop core services casually

Force-stopping is different from disabling. Google warns that force-stopping some essential apps or services can make the phone work incorrectly. In particular, Google states: You can’t force stop or uninstall Google Play services. Play services is integrated with Android, so treat any screen that offers unusual controls for core services as a warning rather than an opportunity to experiment.

Review permissions and unused apps without removing them

Use Play Protect for harmful-app checks

Google Play Protect checks apps and devices for harmful behavior. It can warn about, disable or remove an app it identifies as harmful. Keep it enabled and use its scan result as a security signal; a clean result does not mean every system component is safe to disable for your particular configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Inspect access with Privacy Dashboard and Permission manager

Instead of deleting an app to stop access, open the Pixel’s Privacy Dashboard to see recent access to sensitive information. Use Permission manager to review categories such as location, camera, microphone, contacts and files, then remove a permission when the app does not need it. Removing a permission can break a feature, so test the app afterward.

Review Android’s unused-app behavior

Android can optimize an app that has not been used for a long time by deleting temporary files, revoking permissions, stopping background activity and stopping notifications. On the app’s App info page, review the Pause app activity if unused setting. Leave it enabled for genuinely dormant apps, or turn it off when an app must continue receiving alerts or performing background work.

This setting is a middle ground between leaving every app fully active and disabling a package. It is especially useful for an app you rarely open but still want available. Revisit it after changing the setting, because revoking a permission or stopping notifications can change how the app behaves even though it remains installed.

Troubleshooting after disabling or uninstalling

A feature or notification stopped working

Return to the changed app’s App info page and tap Enable, or reinstall it from the Play Store. Then check its notification and permission settings. If the feature depends on another app, restore that dependency as well rather than repeatedly changing unrelated system packages.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The app reappeared after an update

A system update can restore or update a pre-installed package. Recheck Settings > Apps > All apps and apply Disable again only if the control is available and you still understand the app’s role. Do not assume that an update makes an old package-removal command appropriate.

The phone is unstable or a core function fails

Undo the most recent change first: re-enable the app, restart the Pixel and test calls, mobile data, notifications, camera, Bluetooth and Google account syncing. If the phone remains unreliable, install pending system updates and use Google’s normal troubleshooting sequence. Reserve a factory data reset for advanced troubleshooting; back up first because it erases all data and apps.

You cannot find the app in the list

Confirm that All apps is selected rather than a filtered view. A removed Home-screen icon is still available in the app drawer. A disabled app may be hidden until disabled or system apps are included in the filter. If the app was installed under a different Google account, check that account’s Play Store library.

Several things broke at once

Stop making additional changes and reverse the last one first. Restoring one app at a time makes the cause easier to identify. If the issue persists after re-enabling or reinstalling the changed app, restart the phone and check for system updates before considering a reset. A reset should be the final advanced troubleshooting step, not a way to undo casual experimentation.

A practical decision checklist

  • Want only less Home-screen clutter? Choose Remove from Home screen.
  • Is it a pre-installed system app? Open its App info page and use Disable only when Google provides that control.
  • Did you install it? Use Play Store > profile > Manage apps and devices > Manage > app > Uninstall.
  • Are you chasing battery drain? Check Battery usage and background settings first; keep battery mode on Optimized unless you have a reason to change it.
  • Is it a core service? Avoid force-stopping it. Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled.
  • Did a change cause trouble? Re-enable or reinstall the last app changed before considering broader troubleshooting.
  • Are you considering a reset? Back up first; a factory reset is not an app-cleanup shortcut.

What you should not expect

Google’s guidance does not establish a fixed amount of storage, battery life or performance that disabling an app will recover. Results depend on the app, its data, the Pixel model, Android release and how the phone is used. It also does not establish a universal list of packages that every Pixel owner can safely disable. The safest supported method is therefore app-specific: inspect the app, use the control Pixel provides, make one reversible change, and restore it if a feature depends on it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I uninstall every pre-installed app on a Google Pixel?

No. Google says some system apps that came with a Pixel cannot be deleted, although most can be disabled. Open Settings > Apps > All apps and use Disable only when that control is offered for the specific app.

Will disabling a Pixel app break the phone?

It can affect features that depend on the app, notifications or background activity. Make one change at a time, test the phone, and tap Enable on the same App info page if a function stops working. Google does not provide a universal safe-to-disable list for every Pixel.

What is the difference between Remove and Uninstall?

Uninstall removes the app from the phone. Remove takes only its icon off the Home screen, leaving the app installed and able to send notifications or run normally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I get a disabled app back?

Go to Settings > Apps > All apps, locate the disabled app using the appropriate filter, open its App info page and tap Enable. Restart if a dependent feature does not return immediately.

How do I reinstall an app I uninstalled?

In the Play Store, open your profile, choose Manage apps and devices > Manage, switch to apps that are not installed, select the app and tap Install. Google says purchased apps can be installed again without another purchase when you use the original account.

Should I disable an app to fix battery drain?

First inspect Settings > Battery > Battery usage and the app’s background activity. Keep battery use on Optimized generally. New setup, a factory reset or a software update can temporarily increase drain while Pixel software is optimized.

Can I force-stop Google Play services?

No. Google states that Google Play services cannot be force-stopped or uninstalled. It is integrated with Android, and force-stopping essential services can make the phone work incorrectly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a factory reset a good way to remove unwanted apps?

No. A factory data reset is advanced troubleshooting that erases all phone data and apps. Back up first and use the app-specific Disable, Uninstall or Home-screen removal option for ordinary cleanup.

The Bottom Line

Use the least destructive supported action: Remove an icon for Home-screen clutter, Disable a pre-installed app only when Pixel offers that control, and Uninstall user-installed apps through the Play Store. Change one app at a time, keep core services untouched, and restore the last change if a feature or notification fails.
