Yes—Claude Code can review Home Assistant YAML without changing it when you keep the first pass read-only, share only a sanitized copy, and validate every proposed change with Home Assistant itself. Make a restorable backup first, identify the correct configuration directory for your installation, remove credentials and personal data, use Claude Code’s plan or read-only permissions, and treat its findings as review notes rather than automatic fixes.
What a safe Claude Code audit actually covers
A constrained review is useful for finding malformed YAML, indentation errors, duplicate keys, suspicious permissions, exposed credentials, obsolete options, and configuration warnings. Claude Code can point to a file and line, explain why a setting matters, and suggest a minimal correction without writing that correction.

That review is not a complete security assessment. It cannot prove that every integration, device, remote-access route, credential, add-on, network rule, or external tool is safe. It also cannot infer all hardware and network behavior from static files. Home Assistant’s own validator has a narrower job: checking configuration syntax and loadability, not establishing that automations are logically correct or that the surrounding system is secure.
The safest division of labor is therefore:
- Claude Code performs a documented, evidence-based review of selected files.
- Home Assistant performs its own configuration check.
- You decide which changes to apply, keep a rollback path, and test operational effects.
1. Identify the installation and configuration directory
Do not assume that every Home Assistant installation stores files in the same place. In Home Assistant, open Settings → System → Information and locate the configuration directory shown for your installation. Use that path when making a copy or granting a local tool access.

Home Assistant OS
The usual configuration path is /config. The path can still differ when you are working from a host-side share or a backup extraction, so confirm the location in System information rather than relying on a remembered path.
Home Assistant Container
The container normally sees a mounted configuration folder. A host path such as /srv/homeassistant is only an example; the path that matters to Claude Code is the mounted path in the environment where you launch it. Confirm the bind mount and avoid giving the tool access to the entire host filesystem.
Other installation types
Supervised and manual Python installations have their own layouts and service accounts. Follow the current instructions for that installation type and use the directory that contains your active configuration.yaml, not an old backup or an editor export.

| Supervised or manual | Service user, installation-specific config path, and how the service reads files | Files required for the audit, copied with their original relative paths where possible |
Installation-specific commands and labels change. Check the documentation that matches your installed Home Assistant version before copying, editing, or validating files.
2. Make a backup before you expose or change anything
Create a Home Assistant backup before making configuration changes. Home Assistant describes backups as a way to restore a system or parts of it after a rollback and to migrate to new hardware, and recommends backing up before updates. A backup gives you a recovery route; it does not by itself prove that the destination is encrypted or that credentials are protected from anyone who can read the backup.
For the audit, prefer a controlled working copy. Preserve the directory structure needed to understand includes, but keep the copy separate from the running instance. Record when it was made and which Home Assistant version produced it. Do not let Claude Code write to the live directory during the first pass.

3. Remove secrets and personal data before review
Home Assistant configuration files are plain text and can contain passwords, API tokens, webhook values, hostnames, locations, and other sensitive information. The secrets.yaml mechanism centralizes values; it does not encrypt them. Replace actual values with neutral markers before sharing a file with a model or moving it to another machine.

Files to redact or withhold
- Remove the values referenced by
secrets.yaml, and consider excluding that file entirely unless its structure is specifically relevant. - Exclude
.storageunless a particular issue requires it. It may contain identifiers, account details, or other state that is unnecessary for a YAML review. - Exclude logs and exported diagnostics unless you have removed tokens, addresses, names, and device identifiers. Logs can contain data even when the YAML does not.
- Remove database exports, backups, screenshots, and copied trace data that are not needed to answer the configuration question.
- Replace public or private IP addresses, geographic coordinates, email addresses, camera names, and personally identifying entity names when they do not affect the finding.
Use consistent placeholders so relationships remain understandable—for example, replace one token with REDACTED_TOKEN_A everywhere it appears. Never paste a live credential merely because the model requests more context. Secrets placed in automations can also be visible to administrators in Home Assistant’s user interface and trace views, so redaction is worthwhile even when the review stays on your own machine.
4. Put Claude Code in a constrained review posture
Start with plan or read-only permissions
Anthropic documents Claude Code as read-only by default, with explicit permission required for edits and commands, and provides a plan permission mode for planning work before execution. Use the plan or another supported read-only setup for the initial audit. Because labels and flags are version-sensitive, run the installed CLI’s help command and follow the current documentation instead of copying an option from an older article.
Limit the working directory and tools to the sanitized files needed for the review. Do not use permission-bypass options. Anthropic explicitly cautions that --dangerously-skip-permissions skips permission prompts; it is the opposite of the posture wanted for an initial configuration audit.
Inspect every requested action
Keep approval prompts enabled. Read proposed shell commands before allowing them, especially commands that could:
- write, delete, rename, or bulk-format files;
- restart Home Assistant, containers, or host services;
- change firewall rules, bind addresses, users, or file permissions;
- open network ports or contact external services;
- upload configuration, logs, or diagnostics.
Prompt injection remains a residual risk: text inside a file can contain instructions aimed at the model. Treat those instructions as untrusted data. Claude Code’s permission protections reduce accidental execution, but they do not make a malicious or misleading file harmless.

Choose a review mode deliberately
| Review approach | Can it edit files? | What you must verify | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Passive file review in plan/read-only mode | No, when permissions are maintained | Which files were read, what data was exposed, and whether the model inferred facts not present in the files | First pass and sensitive installations |
| Tool or shell-assisted review | Potentially, depending on granted permissions | Every command, its side effects, network destinations, output handling, and whether it can reach files outside the intended directory | Targeted checks after the passive review |
| Direct work on the live configuration | Yes, if write access is available | Backup integrity, rollback steps, service impact, and a second-person or second-pass review | Only after findings are confirmed and changes are approved |
Do not describe any mode as automatically private or isolated. Whether data leaves the local environment depends on the Claude Code setup, account, network, and enabled integrations; inspect those settings independently.
5. Ask for findings, not automatic remediation
A precise prompt keeps the model in an auditing role. Give it the sanitized files, state that it must not edit them or run commands, and require evidence for every claim.
Review these sanitized Home Assistant configuration files in read-only mode. Do not edit files, run commands, restart services, contact external systems, or reveal redacted values. For each finding, provide the exact relative path and line or key, severity, rationale, confidence, and the smallest proposed correction. Separate confirmed behavior from assumptions about hardware, integration versions, and network topology. Check YAML structure, duplicate keys, quoting, permissions, credentials, remote-access exposure, obsolete options, and configuration warnings. End with questions that require administrator confirmation.
Ask Claude Code to show a minimal diff or a replacement snippet without applying it. Require it to say “not established from the supplied files” when it cannot verify a claim. This prevents guesses about a device model, an integration release, or a network route from being presented as facts.
6. Review Home Assistant-specific risk areas
Credentials and remote access
Have the review identify hard-coded passwords, API keys, long-lived tokens, webhook secrets, insecure transport settings, broad network exposure, and credentials embedded in URLs. A finding is a prompt for verification, not proof that a service is reachable from the internet. Confirm exposure in your router, reverse proxy, firewall, and Home Assistant settings separately.
YAML structure
Home Assistant’s YAML guidance highlights several easy-to-miss behaviors:
- Indentation carries structure. Use spaces consistently; tabs are not valid for indentation.
- Duplicate keys can resolve to the last value, silently replacing an earlier value rather than merging it.
- Unquoted
onandoffcan be interpreted as booleans. Quote values when the integration expects literal text. - Includes and packages must resolve to the paths and structures expected by the active installation.
Ask Claude Code to identify the exact parent key and child key for an indentation concern, rather than merely saying that a file “looks wrong.”

Obsolete or invalid configuration
Request a distinction between syntax errors, schema or integration warnings, deprecated options, and style suggestions. A key that is valid in one Home Assistant release may be ignored or rejected in another. Confirm version-specific claims against the documentation for the version actually running.
Permissions and local files
Review file ownership and mode only when you can provide that information safely. A YAML review cannot establish operating-system permissions from file contents alone. If Claude Code proposes a permission change, verify the service account, container user, mounts, and recovery method before applying it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.7. Validate independently inside Home Assistant
Do not treat a clean Claude Code report as validation. Home Assistant provides a separate homeassistant.check_config action that checks YAML configuration files for errors without loading or applying them. It is an administrator-only action.
- Open Home Assistant’s action or service execution interface available to your version, normally under Developer Tools → Actions.
- Select
homeassistant.check_config. - Run it against the configuration currently installed, not only against the sanitized copy.
- Read the persistent notification and the Home Assistant logs for the reported error, file, and line.
- Correct one reviewed issue at a time, preserve the backup, and run the check again.
The action validates what Home Assistant can read; it does not load the changes, execute automations, test a device, or prove that a credential is safe. The exact validation procedure also depends on the installation type, so consult the local installation instructions when the action is unavailable.
8. Triage findings before changing anything
Use a short decision record for each finding. This keeps a plausible suggestion from turning into an unnecessary outage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →| Disposition | Use it when | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Confirmed error | Home Assistant reports a specific parse or configuration failure at a known path and line | Validator message, file version, and backup identifier |
| High-risk exposure | A credential, remote-access setting, or permission appears unsafe and the surrounding system confirms it | Redacted key or setting, affected service, and independent exposure check |
| Needs administrator confirmation | The conclusion depends on hardware, integration version, network topology, or an undocumented assumption | Question to answer and the evidence still missing |
| Style or maintainability suggestion | The configuration works but could be clearer or less fragile | Expected benefit and why the change is optional |
Keep the model’s confidence separate from severity. A low-confidence suggestion can still deserve investigation, while a high-confidence style preference may not justify downtime.
Best Value
9. Apply only reviewed changes
- Confirm the proposed diff against the original and sanitized copies. Ensure no redacted value is being replaced by a guessed value.
- Make one logically related change at a time and record the file, keys, reason, and approver.
- Run
homeassistant.check_configbefore deciding whether to reload or restart. - Apply the change using the normal Home Assistant workflow for your installation.
- Watch persistent notifications and logs, then test the affected integration or automation with a safe, reversible action.
- If behavior is worse, restore the affected file or backup and document the rollback.
Reloads and restarts perform configuration checking, but a restart interrupts automations and scripts. Do not recommend or schedule a restart as if it were harmless; choose a maintenance window when service interruption matters.
10. Troubleshoot common audit failures
Claude Code cannot find the files
Check the path visible from the environment where Claude Code runs. A host path is not necessarily the same as a container path. Confirm that the copy contains the active configuration.yaml and any included files, and grant access only to that directory.
The model asks for the real secret
Decline and keep the value redacted. Supply the key name, data type, and surrounding structure instead. If the secret itself is the suspected problem, rotate it through the service’s normal procedure rather than pasting it into the conversation.
Recommended Free Tools
A suggested command would change the system
Do not approve it during the first pass. Ask for a dry-run explanation or a proposed command without execution. Inspect the command for writes, network access, service restarts, and paths outside the audit directory.
Home Assistant’s check reports an error Claude Code missed
Use Home Assistant’s message and line number as the operational evidence. Give the redacted error context to Claude Code for explanation, but do not ask it to override the validator. Re-run the check after the correction.
The check is clean but an automation still misbehaves
A syntax check does not test triggers, conditions, device state, timing, permissions, or network reachability. Inspect traces, integration diagnostics, and logs separately, and test the automation under controlled conditions.
A file contains instructions directed at the model
Assume those instructions are untrusted content. Stop tool use, keep permissions constrained, and continue with a human-readable review of the file. Do not allow text in a configuration or log to authorize commands.
11. Know the limits of the result
A successful audit means that the selected, redacted files received a structured review and that Home Assistant accepted the configuration check at that point in time. It does not certify the whole smart-home installation. Devices may still have weak firmware, integrations may have excessive privileges, remote access may be exposed elsewhere, and credentials may be compromised outside the files you inspected.
Re-run the process after major Home Assistant upgrades, integration migrations, changes to remote access, or movement to new hardware. Reconfirm the current Claude Code permission labels and Home Assistant validation path against the documentation and the help output installed on your systems; those interfaces are volatile.
