The options are an official portable build, a web version, or a temporary Windows Sandbox session. They solve different problems: portable software is for ongoing use without a conventional system-wide installation; a web app runs in a browser; and Sandbox lets you test software in a disposable environment, but you still install it inside that environment.
There is no Windows setting that makes every desktop program portable. Check the app’s own documentation and licensing terms before relying on a portable build, and choose the method that matches whether you want to carry the app, try it temporarily, or use it online.

| Method | Best for | Does the app get installed? | What happens to your data? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Official portable distribution | Using a supported app over time, potentially from another location or PC | Not installed globally in the usual way; follow the app developer’s portable-mode instructions | Depends on the app. Do not assume settings and data stay beside the executable. |
| Windows Sandbox | Trying software in a temporary, isolated Windows session | Yes, inside Sandbox; not on the host PC through that session | Closing Sandbox deletes its software, files, and state. |
| Web version | Using a service that offers the needed functions in a browser | No native desktop app is needed for browser use | Depends on the service and account; it is not a local copy of the Windows program. |
Windows Terminal is a Microsoft-documented example of an app with a portable distribution. That does not mean every Windows program has one. For any other app, look for an official portable version or portable-mode instructions from its developer rather than assuming that copying its installed folder will work.
Think about three things before choosing: whether you need to keep using the app, whether the app actually supports the route you want, and where its settings and files will live. A portable app may be convenient to carry but still depend on the PC’s Windows version or permissions. Sandbox is temporary by design and requires setup again for a later session. A web app avoids the native desktop program only if the provider offers a browser version with the functions you need.

For Windows Terminal specifically, Microsoft Learn describes portable mode this way: “Portable mode lets you carry around or archive a preconfigured installation of Windows Terminal and run it from a network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive.” That is a description of Terminal’s supported distribution, not a Windows-wide guarantee for other apps.
Use an official portable version for ongoing use
A portable distribution is intended to run without a conventional global installation. It can be useful when you want to keep a supported app in a chosen folder or carry it between locations. Microsoft describes Windows Terminal portable mode as a way to carry or archive a preconfigured Terminal installation and run it from a network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive. A USB drive is optional; the app must support portable mode for any of these locations to help.
Portable mode is the closest match when your goal is continued use without installing an app globally. It is not the same as merely moving an installed program’s folder to another location. An installed application may rely on files, services, registry entries, or dependencies elsewhere on the original PC. If those pieces are missing, a copied folder may not run as expected.

Set up Windows Terminal portable mode
-
Obtain the portable distribution of Windows Terminal and unpack it into a folder you can access. Use the distribution intended for your Windows system, and check Microsoft’s Windows Terminal distribution documentation for the current package and requirements.
-
In the folder containing
WindowsTerminal.exe, create an empty file named.portable. The marker must sit alongside the executable, not in a parent folder or a separate data folder. -
Relaunch Windows Terminal. Portable mode starts after the marker is in place and the application is launched again.
-
If you want to carry the setup, keep the portable folder together on the network share, cloud drive, or USB flash drive. Test the app from the location and on the PC where you intend to use it.

Microsoft documents Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer as the minimum for this Windows Terminal portable-mode example. That minimum is specific to Terminal; other apps and Windows features can have different requirements.

Keeping the portable folder together is a practical precaution: the documented portable setup uses the unpacked distribution and its marker file, so avoid separating the executable from its required files. If the app is on a removable drive or network location, check that the location is available when you launch it. The fact that Terminal can run from a USB flash drive, cloud drive, or network share does not mean every portable app supports all three locations equally well.
What portable does—and does not—promise
Portable mode is not a universal Windows compatibility feature. A folder copied from a conventional installation may rely on files, services, registry entries, or dependencies elsewhere on the original PC. Even a vendor-provided portable build does not, by itself, prove that every setting and file is stored beside the executable, that the app leaves no trace on the PC, or that it runs without administrator access.
- Check the source: prefer the app developer’s official portable distribution and instructions.
- Check persistence: find out where the app stores settings, downloads, caches, and user data, and whether those items travel with the app.
- Check compatibility: confirm the required Windows version and processor architecture for the particular app.
- Check licensing: portability does not change an app’s license or make use on another PC automatically permissible.
- Check permissions: do not assume portable mode avoids administrator approval or other access requirements.
These checks matter most if you plan to use the app on more than one PC. An app may start from the same folder but still store some data in a user account or depend on capabilities of the PC it is running on. Before relying on a portable build for regular work, check the vendor’s guidance about its configuration and data storage. If you need settings to move with the app, verify that behavior rather than inferring it from the word “portable.”

Windows Sandbox opens a temporary Windows environment separate from your normal desktop. It is useful when you want to try software without installing and later uninstalling it on the host PC. It does not let you run an app without installing it at all: you must install or otherwise set up the software inside the Sandbox session.
Microsoft says each Sandbox launch creates a fresh instance. When you close it, the software, files, and state in that instance are deleted. Microsoft also documents a change beginning with Windows 11 version 22H2: data can persist through restarts initiated inside Sandbox, but closing the Sandbox still removes its state. That makes it suitable for temporary testing, not for keeping an app ready for everyday use without repeating setup.
The distinction is useful: Sandbox can keep a test installation out of the host’s ordinary Windows environment, but the program is still installed in the temporary guest session. If you close the session and want to test the same software later, expect to set it up again. It is not a substitute for a portable build when you need an app to remain available between sessions.
Prepare a Sandbox session
-
Check whether your Windows edition and device support Windows Sandbox, and consult Microsoft’s current Windows Sandbox execution requirements for the workflow you plan to use. That documented workflow specifies Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer on a supported edition with hardware virtualization enabled; these are not necessarily universal requirements for every Sandbox setup or Windows version.

Launch Windows Sandbox and bring the installer or files you need into the temporary environment using a sharing method you understand. Install the software inside Sandbox, not on the host desktop.
-
Test the application in the session. Keep in mind that anything you need after closing Sandbox must be saved outside it using an appropriate, deliberate method; closing the session deletes its contents.
-
Close Sandbox when finished. A later launch gives you a fresh instance rather than the previously installed test setup.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Plan what you need to evaluate before starting. The installer and any test files have to be available within the temporary environment, and you should be clear about what—if anything—you need to keep after the session. Closing Sandbox removes its contents, so do not treat it as long-term storage for a test project or as a place to keep a working installation.
Use it with realistic security expectations
Microsoft lists clean software testing, running untrusted applications, and secure web browsing among Sandbox scenarios. Isolation can reduce exposure to the host, but it is not a guarantee against every malware threat, nor does it make host sharing settings risk-free. Be cautious about what files, folders, clipboard content, or other resources you expose to the session.
Do not assume that a file made available to Sandbox is protected from anything running inside it. Use only sharing arrangements you understand, and avoid exposing resources unnecessarily. The purpose of a temporary isolated environment is to separate a session from normal use, not to promise perfect security or eliminate the need for caution.
Microsoft’s FAQ says that from Windows 11 version 24H2, the older Windows Sandbox app attempts to download its newer version from the Store. If Sandbox behaves differently than expected, check which version is installed and follow Microsoft’s Windows Sandbox FAQ alongside the Windows Sandbox overview.

If the software provider offers a browser version that meets your needs, you can use that instead of installing the native Windows app. This is often the simplest route for a service designed to work online, but it is not a way to run arbitrary Windows desktop software in a browser. The web version may differ from the desktop app in features, offline access, data handling, and account requirements; check the provider’s own documentation before relying on it.

Compare the web version with the specific tasks you need to do, rather than assuming it is identical to the desktop product. A provider may offer a browser-based way to use a service, but that does not mean every desktop feature, local workflow, or offline use is available there. The web app’s data handling and account requirements are set by that service, so check its terms and product details if those affect your choice.
Microsoft describes some apps and widgets that depend on Edge as web-based applications running on the Edge engine, and Edge can install a website as an app. Installing a site as an Edge app changes how it is accessed; it does not turn an unrelated Windows executable into a web app. See Microsoft’s explanation of apps and widgets that depend on Microsoft Edge.
Do not confuse MSIX or S mode with portable operation
MSIX is a packaging and deployment format
MSIX is a Windows approach to packaging and deploying applications, not a promise that an app can be opened without deployment. Microsoft documents virtualization behavior for packaged desktop apps, including limits on writes inside the package and certain per-user, per-app handling of AppData. Those packaging behaviors can affect where an app accesses or stores information, but they do not make an MSIX app a portable program. See Microsoft’s overview of how packaged desktop apps run on Windows.
In other words, the packaging format describes how an app is packaged and behaves in Windows; it does not answer the separate question of whether you can run it without deploying it. If you have an MSIX package, look for the app’s supported installation and use instructions rather than treating the package file as a portable copy.
S mode limits app sources, not installation
Windows 10 and Windows 11 in S mode restrict use to compatible apps from Microsoft Store. That restriction is not a no-install mode. Microsoft says switching out of S mode is permanent and allows installation of apps from outside the Store, so switching is a consequential change—not a casual workaround for running a particular app. Check Microsoft’s Windows in S mode FAQ before considering it.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Pick the right route before downloading anything
- You want to keep using the app without a conventional install: find an official portable distribution and verify its data-storage and compatibility behavior.
- You want to evaluate software without changing the host installation: use Windows Sandbox if it is supported and available on your system, and plan to set up the app again after the session closes.
- You only need the service’s main online functions: see whether its provider offers a suitable browser version.
- You found an MSIX package or use S mode: neither fact alone means that an app can run portably or without installation.
Before choosing, ask what “without installing” means in your case. If you mean not installing on the host PC, Sandbox may fit a short test, while a web app may fit an online service. If you mean keeping the program ready for later use, seek an official portable distribution and check how it handles files and settings. If no portable or browser option exists, Windows does not provide a general switch that makes the ordinary desktop app portable.
The key question is not simply whether Windows can open the app without an installer. It is whether the developer provides a supported portable build, whether a browser version covers your needs, or whether a temporary test session is enough.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make any Windows app portable by copying its folder?
No. A copied folder may depend on files, services, registry entries, or other dependencies elsewhere on the original PC. Use an official portable distribution or instructions from the app’s developer; Windows has no universal setting that makes every desktop app portable.

Does Windows Sandbox let me use an app without installing it?
Not exactly. You install or set up the software inside Sandbox, rather than on the host PC. Each launch creates a fresh instance, and closing Sandbox deletes its software, files, and state. It is suited to temporary testing, not keeping an app ready for ongoing use.
Will my files survive when I close Windows Sandbox?
No. Closing Sandbox deletes the state in that instance. Microsoft documents that since Windows 11 version 22H2, data can persist through restarts initiated inside Sandbox, but that does not make it persist after the Sandbox is closed.
Can I run a Windows desktop program in a browser?
Only if its provider offers a browser version that supports the functions you need. A web app is not a way to execute an arbitrary Windows desktop program, and its features, offline access, data handling, and account requirements may differ from the native app.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does an MSIX package mean an app is portable?
No. MSIX is a packaging and deployment approach. Its Windows behavior, including some file-system and registry virtualization, does not mean the app can be run without deployment.
Can I use Windows Terminal portable mode from a USB drive?
Yes. Microsoft documents Windows Terminal portable mode as usable from a USB flash drive, network share, or cloud drive. Its documented minimum is Windows 10 version 2004 (build 19041) or newer. The USB drive is optional, and this support does not make other apps portable.
Does Windows Sandbox guarantee that untrusted software cannot affect my PC?
No. Sandbox is an isolated environment, but Microsoft does not present it as a guarantee against every malware threat. Be careful about files, folders, clipboard content, and other resources you share with the session.
The Bottom Line
For ongoing use, choose an app’s official portable build and verify its requirements, data storage, and license. For a temporary test, Windows Sandbox keeps setup out of the host session but deletes its contents when closed. For browser-based use, choose a provider’s web version if it covers your needs. None of these options makes every Windows desktop app portable.
