How to Run Windows Apps on Linux with Wine

A practical guide to installing Windows apps with Wine on Linux, managing prefixes, adding app-specific dependencies, and diagnosing common setup problems.

To run a Windows app on Linux with Wine, install Wine using your distribution’s supported instructions, create or choose a Wine prefix, install the app into that prefix, and launch it with the same prefix. A prefix is a separate Windows-like environment for Wine; use one dedicated to an app when you want its settings and dependencies isolated. Wine is a compatibility layer, not a full Windows installation, so whether a program works depends on that program and its requirements.

What Wine does—and what it does not do

Wine describes itself as a compatibility layer that runs Windows applications on POSIX-compliant systems such as Linux, macOS, and BSD. Rather than booting a Windows virtual machine, Wine translates Windows API calls into calls the host operating system can handle. That integration is useful, but it also means compatibility varies by application: Wine is not a guarantee that every Windows program will install or run correctly.

What a Wine prefix contains

A prefix is a directory containing a Wine environment, including configuration, a registry, and Windows-like libraries. Wine uses $HOME/.wine by default; setting the WINEPREFIX environment variable tells it to use another directory. The wine(1) reference documents the default and the variable.

You can let multiple applications share a prefix, or create separate prefixes for applications that need different settings or dependencies. Separate environments make it less likely that a change for one app will affect another, but each additional prefix requires its own setup and maintenance. The trade-off is described in a March 12, 2024 guide to installing Windows apps with Wine.

Run an app in its own prefix

The following examples use a POSIX-compatible shell. Replace myapp and the installer path with your own. Keep the same WINEPREFIX for configuration, installation, dependency changes, and launch.

  1. Install Wine for your distribution. Follow the current instructions for your Linux distribution. Package names, supported Wine builds, and any required 32-bit support differ, so there is no single installation command that applies to every system.
  2. Choose a prefix directory. For example, in a POSIX shell run export WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp". This selects a separate directory instead of the default $HOME/.wine.
  3. Initialize and configure it. Run winecfg while that variable is set. You can also pass the variable for a single command: WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp" winecfg.
  4. Run the Windows installer. For an installer at the example path, use wine "$HOME/Downloads/setup.exe". Quoting the path keeps shell-handled spaces together. Wine can also be invoked with an MSI installer file as an argument.
  5. Launch the installed program from the same prefix. Locate the app’s executable and run it with Wine while the same WINEPREFIX is selected. The correct executable path or extra launch options can be app-specific.

For app-specific installation or launch notes, consult the exact program’s Wine AppDB entry and the software vendor’s instructions. Fedora’s Wine guide also points users to AppDB for compatibility information.

Choose the prefix architecture before creating it

A prefix’s architecture is fixed when it is created. The wine(1) reference states that an existing prefix must be used with its selected architecture; Wine refuses to start if WINEARCH does not match. Check the application’s requirements before making the prefix. If you created it with the wrong architecture, create a new prefix instead of trying to convert it.

Whether a 32-bit-only prefix is supported depends on the installed Wine build and your distribution’s packages. Follow that distribution’s instructions for any required 32-bit components rather than applying commands intended for a different Linux release.

Install dependencies only when the app calls for them

Winetricks provides command-line and graphical tools for changing Wine settings, downloading and installing some Windows DLLs and fonts, and installing certain applications or workarounds. It is a helper, not a universal dependency list: a Windows app does not automatically need a particular runtime or DLL just because it runs under Wine.

Target the same prefix when opening Winetricks, for example: WINEPREFIX="$HOME/.local/share/wineprefixes/myapp" winetricks. If the app’s documentation or a credible AppDB report recommends a specific Winetricks verb, run that verb against the same prefix. Make one deliberate change at a time and note what you changed; this makes it easier to identify which change affected the result.

Troubleshoot a Wine app that will not launch

Check that every command uses the intended prefix

Confirm that winecfg, Winetricks, the installer, and the app launch all target the same WINEPREFIX. Configuring one prefix and launching from another can make it appear that settings or dependencies were ignored.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look up the exact app and version

Search the Wine AppDB for the specific application and version, then review current reports for known compatibility problems or workarounds. A report for another release may not describe the one you are running. The WineHQ Getting Help page links to AppDB and other project support resources.

Resolve architecture mismatches with a new prefix

If Wine reports that the prefix architecture does not match, check the app’s architecture requirements and the prefix’s creation settings. Because the architecture cannot simply be switched in an existing prefix, create a new one with the required architecture, then install the app there.

Add a DLL or font only when there is evidence it is needed

Check the vendor’s instructions or a relevant AppDB report before adding a component through Winetricks. Installing arbitrary DLLs or fonts can complicate diagnosis without addressing the cause of the failure.

Use WineHQ’s support options for unresolved problems

WineHQ lists its documentation, FAQ, installation and configuration wiki, forums, AppDB, and Bugzilla on its Getting Help page. The page also identifies CodeWeavers as a paid support route; check the provider’s current service details if you are considering it.

There is no single established fix for every installer, graphics, sound, launcher, or update failure. Narrow the problem to the exact application and version, Wine version, prefix architecture, and components installed in that prefix before trying further changes.
