Authenticate once in test setup, save a protected browser state securely, then load the target page, wait for a page-specific ready condition, capture a screenshot, and compare it with an approved baseline. A screenshot alone is not a visual regression test: the workflow also needs a meaningful comparison and a deliberate review of differences.
Build a repeatable authenticated test flow
- Create a test identity. Use a dedicated account with non-production data and only the permissions needed for the pages under test. For role-based pages, create separate authenticated states for each role.
- Authenticate in setup. Sign in through the UI or an application-approved API path, wait for a reliable indication that sign-in succeeded, and save browser storage state for subsequent tests. Playwright recommends keeping this state under
playwright/.authand adding that directory to.gitignore; browser state can contain sensitive cookies or headers. See Playwright’s authentication guide. - Load the protected route. Create a browser context with the saved state, then navigate directly to the page you need to test.
- Wait for the page to be ready. Assert a page-specific condition—such as a heading or a known table row—rather than relying on a fixed delay.
- Capture, compare, and review. Compare the rendered page or component with an approved reference image. Accept a changed baseline only when the visual change is intentional.
Keep authentication isolated
Reusing one saved state works when tests do not interfere with one another. If parallel tests modify shared server-side account data, use separate accounts (for example, one per worker) or isolate the data another way. Keep saved state out of source control, restrict access to it in CI, and regenerate it when credentials or session policy changes.

Use Playwright Test for built-in screenshot comparisons
Playwright Test has screenshot assertions as well as reusable authenticated browser state. The first run creates reference screenshots; later runs compare against them. The official guide covers configuration and assertion behavior: Playwright visual comparisons.

Example: save login state, then test a protected page
The following TypeScript example assumes your app exposes a test login flow and that the protected page has a stable heading. Replace the example URL, selectors, and credentials with your test environment’s values. Keep credentials in environment variables rather than source code.

});Make sure the auth setup runs before the visual test and that playwright/.auth exists or can be created by your setup. Configure your test project to run the setup dependency before tests that use the state. The visual test should use the same browser, operating system, rendering mode, and relevant settings as the baseline generation run: differences across OS, browser, hardware, or headless mode can create image diffs unrelated to an application regression.
Choose checkpoints that answer a question
A full-page checkpoint can catch layout shifts across a long page; a focused element screenshot is better when the test concerns one component or state. Use named checkpoints for distinct states such as an account menu open or a populated table, rather than taking many nearly identical snapshots.

Make screenshots stable without hiding defects
- Control changing data. Use fixtures or stub volatile API responses where practical, so content does not change between baseline and comparison.
- Wait for a real ready condition. A visible heading, loaded row, or controlled request completion is usually more reliable than a sleep. Cypress likewise advises confirming the page has finished changing before capture: Cypress visual testing guidance.
- Control animation and time-dependent content. Disable or control animation when the test setup supports it, and freeze clocks or dates when they materially affect the rendered page.
- Mask narrowly. Ignore only genuinely unpredictable regions, such as a third-party widget that cannot be controlled. A broad mask or permissive page-wide threshold can conceal real regressions.
- Match the baseline environment. Keep capture and comparison conditions consistent, including browser and platform settings.
Use Cypress with a visual comparison integration
cy.screenshot() captures an image; by itself it does not compare that image against an approved baseline. Add a visual testing plugin or service for comparison and review. Cypress lists integrations including Applitools, Percy, Sauce Labs Visual, and SmartBear VisualTest on its visual testing page.

Choose an approach that fits your team
Start with the browser framework already used by your application tests. Add a hosted visual-testing service when its rendering coverage, collaboration, or baseline review workflow solves a concrete need. No single approach is best for every team; assess framework support, capture scope, masking controls, where rendering happens, approval workflow, access and data policies, and current pricing directly with vendors.

Review visual changes deliberately
A baseline is the expected appearance against which later runs are checked. When a diff appears, inspect it in context: decide whether it is an intended UI change or a defect, then approve a new reference only for the intended change. Applitools describes this baseline lifecycle and named checkpoints in its visual UI testing overview. Treat baseline updates like code changes rather than accepting a batch automatically.

Handle login complications safely
MFA, CAPTCHA, SSO, and device-bound authentication depend on the application’s approved test environment and identity-provider setup. Coordinate with the team that owns that environment to provide a supported test identity or sign-in flow. Do not bypass access controls or use a personal production session as a shortcut.
Troubleshooting common failures
- The protected page redirects to login. Confirm setup completed successfully, the state file was written and loaded into the intended context, and the session has not expired. Re-authenticate through the approved flow if needed.
- CI cannot find or use the state file. Check that the setup project runs first and writes the file at the path the visual test reads. Ensure the file is available only to the job that needs it and is not committed.
- Tests interfere when run in parallel. Look for shared account changes or shared test data. Assign isolated accounts or data per worker when tests mutate server state.
- Images differ on every run. Identify unstable content, animation, delayed rendering, or environment variation. Replace arbitrary sleeps with readiness assertions and control dynamic inputs before widening any comparison tolerance.
- A screenshot exists but no regression result appears. A capture command alone is not comparison. Add a comparison assertion or a visual integration and configure its approved-baseline workflow.
- Many diffs appear after a platform change. Generate and compare baselines under consistent browser, OS, and rendering settings, or intentionally establish a new baseline for the new environment and review the resulting changes.
- Login requires MFA, CAPTCHA, or SSO. Ask the application or identity-provider owner for an authorized test setup; there is no safe universal bypass procedure.
