Use Playwright Test against your running SvelteKit app: visit representative routes and states, assert screenshots with toHaveScreenshot(), commit the approved baselines, and inspect every visual diff before updating them. Reliable comparisons depend on keeping the browser and operating-system environment consistent.
What visual regression testing catches
A visual regression test compares a rendered screenshot with an approved reference image. It can catch changes in layout, typography, color, spacing, and other rendered details that a markup-only snapshot may not reveal. Playwright Test includes screenshot comparison through expect(page).toHaveScreenshot() (Playwright visual comparisons).

Set up a page-level Playwright test
If Playwright Test is not already in the project, install it using the official Playwright setup guide. Ensure the app is running before navigating to it. A minimal test looks like this:
#1 Best Overall
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual baseline', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('http://127.0.0.1:4173/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Choose meaningful routes and states rather than capturing every possible screen. A useful first set might include the public landing page, a key journey, a populated view, and a meaningful empty or error state. Those are practical starting suggestions, not a prescribed SvelteKit test matrix.
Make the test exercise the intended state
Before taking a screenshot, navigate to the route and establish the state you mean to protect: for example, sign in with controlled test data, open a menu, or populate a form. Keep that setup deterministic. For test data or network calls outside the test’s control, mock responses where appropriate; Playwright’s best-practices guide recommends isolating tests and controlling network behavior (Playwright best practices).
Create and approve screenshot baselines
- Run the test once. On the initial run, Playwright generates the expected screenshot. Its screenshot matcher captures repeatedly until it gets two consecutive matching images, which helps avoid baselining a page still in motion.
- Inspect the generated image. Confirm that the route, data, viewport, and UI state are the ones you intended to test.
- Commit the baseline with the test. Playwright stores snapshots in a folder next to the relevant test file and advises keeping them in version control.
- Run the test again. Playwright compares the current rendering with the committed reference and reports differences for review.
See Playwright’s snapshot documentation for baseline storage and screenshot assertions.

Rendered pixels can vary with the operating system, browser version, browser settings, hardware, power state, and headless mode. Playwright recommends running comparisons in the same environment used to generate the baseline. Keep the following stable where possible:
Rank #2
- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 16GB with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (16GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5
- CanaKit Low Noise Bearing System Fan
- Mega Heat Sink - Black Anodized
- Operating system and browser version.
- Viewport size, device scale factor, and relevant browser settings.
- Test data, network responses, and the route’s initial state.
- CI image and browser dependencies between baseline creation and later runs.
For timestamps, animations, embedded content, or other genuinely volatile regions, first stabilize the source if practical. Playwright also supports a screenshot stylesheet through stylePath to filter changing content. Use it narrowly: hiding a region can also hide a real regression. The visual comparison documentation describes screenshot options, including stylePath and maxDiffPixels (Playwright visual comparisons).
Review diffs and update baselines deliberately
A failed visual assertion is a prompt to inspect the image diff, not an instruction to replace the reference automatically. Decide whether the difference is an intended design change or a defect. Fix unintended changes in the app. For an approved change, regenerate snapshots with:
npx playwright test --update-snapshots
Review the changed images and commit them with the code change. Updating snapshots indiscriminately can make an unintended UI change look approved.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRun the suite in CI
Install the project dependencies and the required browser dependencies in CI before running Playwright. A container can help preserve a consistent environment for screenshot work; Playwright’s CI guide covers setup considerations (Playwright continuous integration).

If the CI machine is resource-constrained or results are noisy, begin with a conservative worker count and increase parallelism only after runs are repeatable. This is operational guidance, not a guaranteed fix for every intermittent failure. Keep the CI browser and operating-system image aligned with the environment used for accepted baselines.
Choose the right test scope
| Approach | Useful when | Baseline and review | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Playwright page screenshots | You want route, composition, or user-journey checks in browser tests. | Local snapshots alongside tests; inspect diffs and commit approved images. | Your team owns snapshot files and environment consistency; browser-rendering differences can add noise. |
| Playwright component gallery | You need isolated reusable-component states and can serve a gallery through your app pipeline. | Playwright navigates a gallery page and asserts screenshots of rendered components. | Your team owns the gallery and story discovery. This is a framework-agnostic approach, not a SvelteKit-specific turnkey integration. See Playwright component testing. |
| Storybook visual tests with Chromatic | Your UI is represented by Storybook stories and you want cloud review and CI status workflows. | Story screenshots are reviewed through Chromatic’s hosted workflow. | Requires Storybook setup and a Chromatic project. Storybook’s version 8 guide lists Storybook 7.6 or higher for the @chromatic-com/storybook addon; confirm current requirements before setup. See Storybook visual tests. |
| Chromatic for Playwright | Existing Playwright journeys should produce hosted visual snapshots. | The integration uploads test-page archives for cloud snapshotting and review. | Requires a Chromatic project, token, and CLI integration. The cited setup supports Playwright 1.38.0 or later and says Chrome must be present; verify current setup details at Chromatic for Playwright. |
| Applitools | You are evaluating a hosted visual-testing platform for web applications. | The vendor describes testing from components through pages and broad browser coverage. | Confirm framework integration, browser support, pricing, and program terms for your specific setup. See Applitools visual testing. |
Compare options by test scope, baseline location, review workflow, browser and viewport coverage, CI requirements, dynamic-content handling, debugging detail, and total service cost. Pricing and program availability for hosted services are not established here.
Troubleshoot common visual-test failures
The first run creates a snapshot instead of passing
This is expected when no approved baseline exists yet. Inspect the generated file, then commit it alongside the test if it represents the correct page and state.
The test fails with a large or unexpected diff
Check whether the app loaded the intended route and test data. Then verify that browser version, operating system, viewport, device scale factor, and rendering mode match the baseline environment. A changed environment can alter pixels even when the application code is unchanged.

The diff changes between repeated runs
Look for uncontrolled responses, timestamps, animations, embedded content, or other dynamic regions. Stabilize inputs or mock responses where appropriate. If filtering with stylePath, limit it to known volatile content so the test retains coverage of meaningful UI.
Updating snapshots seems to fix every failure
Snapshot updates replace the comparison target; they do not establish that a visual change is correct. Review each diff first, fix unwanted UI changes, and update only for intentional changes.
CI results differ from local results
Align the CI and baseline environments, including operating system, browser version, dependencies, and headless settings. If CI is under pressure, reduce worker concurrency while diagnosing instability, then add workers only after stable runs.
