You can run two power supplies together only when the exact motherboard or system documentation supports that setup. Check the manual for your motherboard model and revision before connecting anything; do not assume a generic adapter or wiring method will work.
What does “tie two PSUs together” mean?
It can mean either synchronizing a secondary PSU so it starts and stops with the computer, or connecting two supplies to a motherboard designed for dual-PSU operation. These are different arrangements, and the correct one depends on the system.

An ATX 24-pin connector carries power as well as control signals, including PS_ON# and PWR_OK. The system’s control method therefore matters when coordinating startup; simply providing power to two supplies does not establish that they will start and operate together correctly. How to check whether your motherboard supports two PSUs
- Identify the exact motherboard model and revision. Check the board label or system documentation. Support and included accessories can vary by product.
- Open the matching motherboard manual. Look for an expressly documented dual-PSU connection, adapter, or synchronization method. Follow the manual’s connector placement and cable arrangement exactly.
- If the manual does not document dual-PSU use, stop. Use one suitably rated PSU or contact the motherboard manufacturer for guidance. Do not treat a generic adapter, paperclip test, or modified wire as approved for your board.
Examples of documented motherboard-specific setups
Some boards provide explicit instructions, but those instructions apply to the named models—not to ATX motherboards generally.

- ASUS Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE: ASUS documents a specific dual-PSU cable arrangement for this motherboard. Follow the diagram and instructions in the Pro WS WRX90E-SAGE SE manual.
These examples do not establish that either adapter or arrangement is compatible with other boards.
Installation checks that prevent avoidable damage
- Disconnect AC power first. Turn off and unplug the supplies before installation, and follow each product’s instructions. Corsair’s PSU installation guidance covers safe installation practice.
- Use cables intended for each PSU. Use the original cables supplied with each unit or cables explicitly confirmed as compatible with that exact PSU. Modular PSU-side pinouts are not standardized across every model; Seasonic advises using the cables supplied with the PSU in its cable compatibility guidance.
- Stay within connector and cable ratings. Do not overload a cable or connector. Excess current can cause discoloration or melting and may damage equipment or cause malfunction, as Corsair explains in its cable-overload guidance.
- Keep the connection method model-specific. Do not bridge pins, cut or splice wires, or connect PSU outputs together based on generic instructions. The available manufacturer instructions support only their documented board arrangements, not arbitrary wiring.
When a PSU tester helps—and when it does not
A PSU tester can help check a suspect power supply; it does not synchronize two supplies or validate a dual-PSU installation. Treat it as a troubleshooting aid for an individual PSU, not as a substitute for motherboard documentation. See Corsair’s PSU testing guidance.

Should you use one PSU or two?
Before choosing two supplies, confirm that the board supports them, that the documented synchronization method suits your system, that each PSU has compatible cables for its own connections, and that both units fit in the case. If the board does not document dual-PSU use, choose a single suitably rated supply or ask the manufacturer for a supported solution.
