Yes, Steam games can run on some Linux ARM devices, but there is no universal setup or guarantee that a particular game will work. You need a 64-bit ARM Linux system, a graphics driver that supports the game’s rendering requirements, and a way to run x86 software. Box64 and FEX provide different translation paths; for Windows games, Proton is an additional compatibility layer. The right combination depends on your device, distribution, kernel, GPU and drivers.
How the pieces fit together
ARM and x86-64 use different processor instruction sets. Many Steam clients, games and game launchers are built for x86, so an ARM Linux device needs a translation layer to run them. That is separate from graphics support: translating CPU instructions does not provide a Vulkan or OpenGL driver that the game can use.

- Box64 runs x86-64 Linux programs on compatible 64-bit ARM Linux systems by translating calls while using native system libraries. Its project README says 32-bit binaries require Box86 or Box32; Box32 is experimental.
- FEX translates x86 instructions to Arm64. Valve describes FEX as part of the Proton path for Steam Frame, where it forwards graphics API calls to native host libraries and uses code caching. That product-specific implementation is not a universal installation recipe for other ARM devices. See Valve’s Steam Frame compatibility documentation.
- Proton handles Windows-to-Linux compatibility for Windows games. It does not, by itself, solve the x86-to-ARM processor difference. With FEX, the Steam client and Proton build must also have compatible architectures: Valve’s Proton documentation says ARM64 Proton builds cannot be used by x86 Steam running through FEX.
Consequently, a game can fail even when Steam opens: its CPU instructions, 32-bit components, graphics API, launcher, synchronization, anti-cheat or DRM may present separate obstacles.
Choose the route that matches your system
| Route | What it translates | What to check | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Box64 | x86-64 Linux programs on ARM64 Linux | 64-bit host libraries; whether Steam or the game needs 32-bit components; GPU and driver support | Box64 v0.4.0 notes dated 2026-01-03 report Linux Steam running on Arm64, while warning about possible download crashes and synchronization issues in some games. See the release notes. |
| FEX on Ubuntu ARM64 | x86 programs to Arm64; Proton can add Windows-game compatibility | The Ubuntu release, FEX root filesystem availability, Steam and Proton architecture, and graphics drivers | The Ubuntu community tutorial describes one setup, not a procedure guaranteed for every distribution or ARM board. |
| Ubuntu ARM64 Steam snap | An x86 Steam client bundled with FEX | The current Ubuntu testing instructions and hardware/driver compatibility | Ubuntu labels this an experimental snap, not officially supported by Valve. Its testing notes say development and testing have primarily used NVIDIA DGX Spark. See the Ubuntu call for testing. |
| Steam Frame | Valve’s integrated SteamOS, Proton and FEX path | Whether you are using Steam Frame itself | Valve documents this implementation for Steam Frame, described as using a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Arm64 chip. It does not establish identical support on other Snapdragon devices or ARM boards. |
Check your device before installing
- Confirm the operating system and architecture. Use device-specific documentation to verify that you have a supported 64-bit ARM Linux distribution, rather than assuming that any ARM device or 32-bit installation will work.
- Identify the kernel, GPU and driver. Check the device maker or distribution documentation for graphics API support. A game’s rendering needs and the available Vulkan or OpenGL driver can determine whether it launches.
- Decide whether your target is a Linux or Windows game. A native Linux game still needs its x86 CPU instructions translated. A Windows game additionally needs a working Proton path.
- Check architecture and 32-bit dependencies. Box64 targets x86-64 Linux programs. If the path calls 32-bit binaries, check the current Box64 guidance for Box86 or experimental Box32. For FEX, verify that Steam and the Proton build are architecturally compatible.
- Check the current instructions for your exact distribution and device. Packaging, kernel support and graphics drivers vary; commands intended for Ubuntu ARM64 may not apply to another board or distribution.
Set up FEX using the documented Ubuntu ARM64 example
The Ubuntu community tutorial is a scoped example rather than a generic ARM Linux recipe. Follow its current instructions for your Ubuntu release and check that its root filesystem and packages match your host before proceeding.

- Install FEX using the method in the Ubuntu FEX tutorial.
- If the setup requires an x86 root filesystem, use FEXRootFSFetcher as described in that tutorial. Ubuntu notes that available root filesystems can mismatch the host Ubuntu release.
- Install Steam’s architecture-independent launcher package from the Valve mirror as the tutorial directs. The package choice and installation details belong to that Ubuntu setup; do not substitute an unverified package or assume the same instructions apply to another distribution.
- Launch Steam through FEX with
FEXBash steam, the command used in the guide, and follow its guidance if Steam needs additional configuration. - Test a single game before investing time in a larger library. Record the exact game, Proton build if used, graphics API and observed failure or success.
Ubuntu also has an experimental ARM64 Steam snap that bundles x86 Steam with FEX. Check that page for current channel and installation instructions rather than assuming a channel or command remains current. Ubuntu warns of unexpected behavior and says the snap is not officially supported by Valve.
Set up Box64 for an ARM64 Linux host
- Start with the current Box64 installation and Steam documentation for your distribution. There is no single command sequence established for every ARM board.
- Confirm the host is 64-bit little-endian ARM Linux and has the required 64-bit libraries. Box64 relies on compatible host libraries; an incomplete or mismatched system can prevent applications from starting.
- Check whether Steam or the game invokes 32-bit components. Box64 does not replace the 32-bit path: its README points to Box86 or Box32, and describes Box32 as experimental.
- Install a current Box64 release, then launch Steam according to the distribution-specific project instructions. The v0.4.0 release notes report Linux Steam working on Arm64, but also flag possible download crashes and synchronization problems affecting some games.
Box64’s README gives a DynaRec figure of 5–10 times faster than its interpreter alone. That is a comparison with the interpreter, not a game frame-rate promise, a benchmark for a particular board, or a comparison with FEX.

Test games and troubleshoot one failure at a time
Do not treat “ARM incompatibility” as a complete diagnosis. Keep a note of the device, Linux distribution and version, kernel, GPU and driver, Steam client architecture, translation layer, Proton build, graphics API and exact behavior. Then investigate the likely layer:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Steam does not start or download reliably: check the architecture, host libraries and the Steam instructions for your chosen translation layer. Box64 v0.4.0 specifically warns that Steam downloads may crash.
- The game starts but stops during launch: find out whether it uses 32-bit binaries, a separate launcher, anti-cheat or DRM. Those components may have their own compatibility requirements.
- The game fails when initializing graphics: check the device’s actual driver and Vulkan or OpenGL support against the game’s needs. CPU translation cannot remedy missing graphics support.
- The game runs but behaves incorrectly: investigate game-specific issues such as synchronization. Box64’s v0.4.0 notes identify synchronization problems for some games.
- The game launches but performs poorly: distinguish translation overhead from limits in the board’s CPU, GPU, memory and drivers. The available guidance does not establish representative performance figures for a particular game or device.
Ubuntu’s tutorial warns that translation overhead exists and that some games may not work. Its ARM64 Steam snap testing notes also show that hardware and graphics-driver constraints can affect results. A Raspberry Pi 5, mentioned in Box64 material and Ubuntu testing, is a possible experimentation device—not evidence that every Steam game will be suitable or playable on it.

What to expect
Steam on Linux ARM is a real but device-dependent setup, not a universal compatibility layer you install once and forget. Box64 is aimed at x86-64 Linux programs; FEX is used in a documented Ubuntu ARM64 example and in Valve’s Steam Frame path. For Windows games, Proton adds another compatibility layer, with architecture matching essential. Verify the exact device, distribution, graphics stack and game before treating any setup guide as applicable to your system.
