Use Selenium 4 with Microsoft Edge WebDriver for ordinary tests in today’s Chromium-based Edge. For legacy sites that require Internet Explorer behavior, use Internet Explorer Driver (IEDriver) to launch Edge in IE mode. Selenium no longer officially supports standalone Internet Explorer, and Microsoft’s IE-mode guide requires IEDriver 4.0.0.0 or later.
Choose the right browser path
| Decision | Current Microsoft Edge | Legacy Internet Explorer behavior |
|---|---|---|
| What the test exercises | Chromium-based Microsoft Edge | Internet Explorer mode in Microsoft Edge |
| Selenium path | Selenium 4 Edge driver classes | Internet Explorer Driver and Internet Explorer options |
| Driver | Microsoft Edge WebDriver | IEDriver 4.0.0.0 or later, per Microsoft’s guide |
| Use it for | Standard Edge compatibility and end-to-end testing | Legacy sites that still need IE compatibility |
| Watch for | Selenium 3 and the old EdgeHTML-specific WebDriver are not the current path | IE mode and enterprise site configuration may be required; standalone IE is retired |
Microsoft distinguishes current Chromium-based Edge from the retired EdgeHTML-era browser and directs current automation to Edge WebDriver. Selenium’s Edge documentation likewise points to the Edge-specific driver classes. Microsoft Edge WebDriver guide
For IE-dependent content, the supported approach in the cited guidance is IE mode within Edge, automated through IEDriver. Microsoft says organizations can configure IE mode with an Enterprise Site List. Microsoft’s IE mode overview
Run a test in current Microsoft Edge
Install Selenium 4 for your language and install the Microsoft Edge WebDriver version that corresponds to the Edge browser on the test machine. Follow Microsoft’s current setup instructions for making the driver available to Selenium. The example below shows the typical Python driver-class pattern; assertions and application-specific setup belong in the test.

Use Selenium 4 for this Chromium-based Edge path: Microsoft says Selenium 3 is unsupported for current Edge automation. Do not substitute the legacy Microsoft WebDriver intended for the older EdgeHTML browser. Microsoft’s Edge WebDriver guide
Run a legacy test in Edge IE mode
Prepare the Windows test machine
- Confirm that the target website opens in Edge’s IE mode on the machine. For managed environments, check whether the site must be included in the organization’s Enterprise Site List.
- Install Selenium for the language used by the project, and obtain IEDriver 4.0.0.0 or later, the minimum version stated in Microsoft’s guide.
- Make the IEDriver executable available on
PATH, or configure its location as appropriate for the language binding and runtime. - Find the installed
msedge.exepath. It differs by machine and installation, so replace the sample path below with the actual one where explicit configuration is needed.
Launch Edge IE mode with Python
This follows Microsoft’s documented Python pattern. It is a setup example, not a claim of independent browser testing.

Microsoft documents creating InternetExplorerOptions, enabling Edge attachment, optionally setting the Edge executable path, and starting an Internet Explorer driver session. The exact executable location is environment-specific. Microsoft’s IE-mode automation guide
Know when explicit Edge options may differ
Selenium says that with IEDriver 4.5.0 or later, the explicit attach and executable-path parameters may not be necessary if Internet Explorer is absent. If both IE and Edge are installed, Selenium says the attach setting alone may be needed. These behaviors depend on the installed driver and machine configuration; check the current Selenium and Microsoft guidance before removing options. Selenium IE-specific functionality

Check legacy IE driver configuration only when relevant
Some older Windows and IE driver setups need additional configuration. These are not universal steps for every IE-mode test:
- Driver architecture: Selenium recommends the 32-bit IE driver because the 64-bit driver has known limitations.
- Protected Mode: The legacy IE Driver Server guidance describes keeping Protected Mode settings consistent across zones.
- IE 11 registry setting: The same legacy guidance documents an IE 11 registry setting. Apply it only if it matches the Windows and driver setup in use.
Use Selenium’s required-configuration documentation and the current Microsoft IE-mode guide to decide whether those legacy checks apply to your machine. Selenium IE Driver Server guidance

Troubleshoot common setup failures
- Selenium cannot create an Edge session: Confirm that the project uses Selenium 4, that Microsoft Edge WebDriver is installed and discoverable, and that it matches the current Chromium Edge automation setup.
- The session starts in ordinary Edge rather than IE mode: Verify that the target site is configured to open in IE mode, that the organization’s site-list policy permits it where applicable, and that the test uses IEDriver with the IE options rather than the Edge driver class.
- IEDriver cannot find Edge: Check the actual
msedge.exepath and setedge_executable_pathwhen required. Confirm that the driver version and installed browsers support the options being used. - Driver executable is not found: Put IEDriver on
PATHor configure its location for the language binding and runtime. - Legacy IE automation behaves inconsistently: If this setup uses the legacy IE driver against IE, review the 32-bit driver recommendation and the documented Protected Mode and IE 11 registry configuration. These checks may not apply to every Edge IE-mode installation.
- Standalone Internet Explorer is unavailable: Treat this as expected on supported modern setups. Use Edge IE mode for legacy compatibility rather than targeting standalone IE.
Selenium states that official support for standalone Internet Explorer ended in June 2022; its IE driver documentation still describes support for running Microsoft Edge in IE Compatibility Mode.
