For less cookie-based tracking between websites, block third-party or cross-site cookies—not all cookies. Blocking every cookie is a broader setting that can disrupt sign-ins, saved preferences, and embedded features. The steps below cover Chrome on a computer, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge; browser labels and mobile menus can differ by version. For Safari and other browsers, use the official device-specific guidance linked below.
Choose what you want to block
A first-party cookie is associated with the site you are visiting and may keep you signed in or remember preferences. A third-party cookie is set by a different site, such as a service embedded in the page, and can be used to track activity across sites. Browser terminology varies: Firefox often calls these cross-site cookies.

- Block third-party or cross-site cookies: a narrower way to limit cookie-based tracking between sites, while allowing first-party cookies to work.
- Block all cookies: a broader restriction that may break logins, preferences, embedded content, and other site functions.
Cookie blocking does not prevent every form of tracking. Browsers also use other privacy protections, and the settings described here are not a complete measure of a browser’s overall privacy.
Disable third-party cookies in Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome and select More (the three-dot menu).
- Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Third-party cookies.
- Choose the option to block third-party cookies.
Chrome’s Incognito mode blocks third-party cookies by default. In regular browsing, Chrome lets you add site exceptions. A temporary allowance can apply to the current site; Google says it remains for 90 days or until you turn the setting off. Google warns that sites may not work as expected when cookies are disallowed. These steps are for Chrome on a computer; do not assume the same menu is available in every mobile version. Block cross-site cookies in Firefox
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings.
- Open Privacy & Security.
- Under Enhanced Tracking Protection, choose Custom, check Cookies, and select the cookie types you want Firefox to block.
- To block all third-party or cross-site cookies, choose All cross-site cookies (may cause websites to break).
Firefox’s Total Cookie Protection is a separate approach: it partitions third-party storage into a separate cookie jar for each site rather than simply blocking every cookie. Mozilla says Total Cookie Protection is enabled by default worldwide. A site can still malfunction—for example, embedded content may show errors or a login may fail. Mozilla cautions that cookie protection is not necessarily the cause of every site problem.
Make an exception for a site that fails
Select the shield icon beside the address bar and turn off Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site. Firefox reloads the page and enables trackers on that site. This is a per-site workaround, not a reason to weaken protection across all sites. Disable third-party cookies in Microsoft Edge
- Open Edge Settings.
- Go to Privacy, search, and services > Cookies.
- Turn on Block third-party cookies.
For site-specific control, Edge also provides allowed and blocked cookie lists. If you want to block all cookies instead, turn off Allow sites to save and read cookie data (recommended). Microsoft warns that blocking can stop some pages from displaying correctly or prompt a site to ask you to allow cookies. See Microsoft’s Edge cookie and site-data guidance for the current controls.

Safari’s instructions depend on whether you use an iPhone or Mac. Rather than relying on a menu name that may vary by device or release, use Apple’s current guidance for your device: Manage cookies and website data in Safari.

For Safari, Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Samsung Internet, and Opera, USAGov links to browser-specific cookie-blocking instructions. Choose your browser and device on USAGov’s online privacy page. Its guidance warns that blocking cookies may adversely affect site functionality. Block future cookies or clear existing ones?
Changing a cookie setting controls what the browser accepts going forward. It does not necessarily remove cookies already stored. Clearing stored cookies is a separate action, and in Edge selecting Clear browsing data > Cookies and other site data signs you out of most sites. Edge can also delete cookies and site data whenever it closes, which likewise signs you out of most sites. Use the browser’s own clear-data controls when your goal is to remove stored data, not simply to limit future cookies.

Troubleshoot a site that stops working
- A sign-in fails or you are logged out: the site may depend on cookies. Try a site-specific exception or, in Firefox, disable Enhanced Tracking Protection for that site.
- An embedded video, payment flow, or other page feature is missing: it may rely on a third-party service. Allow cookies for the affected site if your browser offers a narrow exception.
- A page still fails after an exception: cookie blocking may not be the cause. Test the site without changing other privacy settings at once, so you can identify which change matters.
- You cleared cookies and lost saved sessions: sign back in; clearing stored cookies commonly removes sign-in state.
- You cannot find the listed setting: check the browser’s current official help for your operating system and version. Menus and controls can differ across desktop and mobile.
