For a low-RAM Linux server, start with one headless Selenium browser in a pinned standalone Docker image, run tests serially, and measure memory use on your actual pages before adding sessions. There is no India-specific Selenium command: the important local checks are the server’s memory limits, CPU architecture, and whether the selected browser image supports it. No universal minimum RAM figure is established for Selenium screenshots; demand varies with the browser, page, assets, and test workload.
How do I run Selenium headless on a Linux server?
A standalone Selenium container is a practical starting point for a server because it packages the browser and Grid service together. Use a fully specified image tag rather than latest, and check that the tag supports your host architecture before starting it. The project’s image matrix and setup guidance can change, so consult the SeleniumHQ Docker Selenium README for a currently supported tag and version-specific instructions.

Check the machine and image first
- Record the Linux distribution and CPU architecture. Common labels include
amd64/x86_64andarm64/aarch64. - Check the server’s physical or virtual memory limit, available disk, and any container memory limits.
- Confirm that the exact browser image and tag are published for that architecture. Do not assume an image available for amd64 is available for arm64; the project warns against relying on AMD64 emulation on ARM64.
- Choose Chrome or Firefox based on the browser coverage your tests require. The reviewed documentation does not establish that one uses less memory than the other.
Start one standalone browser
Replace the placeholder with a currently supported, fully specified tag for your architecture:
docker run --rm
--shm-size=2g
-p 4444:4444
selenium/standalone-chrome:<pinned-full-tag>
SeleniumHQ documents --shm-size=2g as a known browser-container workaround, while describing it as an arbitrary value that may need tuning. This sets the container’s shared-memory allocation; it does not mean the server must have exactly 2 GB of total RAM, nor guarantee that this setting suits every workload.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Use headless mode without assuming it makes memory negligible
Set the browser’s headless option in the test client. SeleniumHQ says headless browser execution does not require Xvfb and documents SE_START_XVFB=false for disabling Xvfb startup. Follow the Docker Selenium README’s current Chrome/headless notes, since browser behavior can change. Do not disable Xvfb unless the browser is actually configured for headless operation. Headless removes the graphical display requirement; it does not establish a fixed memory saving.
How can I take screenshots with Selenium in Python?
Install the Selenium Python package in the test environment, start the standalone container, then connect to its Grid endpoint. This example uses Remote WebDriver and saves the current browser window as a PNG:
from selenium import webdriver
from selenium.webdriver.chrome.options import Options
options = Options()
options.add_argument("--headless")
driver = webdriver.Remote(
command_executor="http://localhost:4444",
options=options,
)
try:
driver.set_window_size(1365, 768)
driver.get("https://example.com")
# Add an application-specific readiness wait here if needed.
if not driver.save_screenshot("screenshot.png"):
raise RuntimeError("Selenium did not save the screenshot")
finally:
driver.quit()
The Selenium interaction documentation describes save_screenshot and element screenshot APIs; the Grid guide shows Remote WebDriver usage. The snippet combines those documented patterns, but it is not a tested recipe for a particular server or package version. See Selenium’s screenshot documentation and Grid’s getting-started guide.

Connect from a separate client container
If Python runs in another container, localhost points to that client container, not the browser service. Put both containers on a reachable Docker network and use the Selenium service’s network hostname as command_executor. The Grid guide documents the local endpoint and status interface for a single local setup.
Make captures comparable
- Set a deliberate viewport size, as in the example, when comparing images between runs.
- Wait for the application state you need before capturing. Navigation completing does not necessarily mean delayed content or images have finished rendering.
- For a page element rather than the whole current window, use Selenium’s element screenshot API.
- Use
driver.quit()in afinallyblock so an exception does not leave the session running.
How much RAM does Selenium need?
There is no established universal minimum for a Linux server running a particular site or screenshot workload. Browser memory use depends on the browser, page, assets, viewport, and what the test does. The Docker Selenium project’s 2g shared-memory example is not a minimum total-RAM figure. Begin with one browser session, then observe peak memory and stability while running representative tests on the actual machine.
Measure before increasing concurrency
- Run representative pages serially and record host memory, swap activity, CPU use, and container restarts.
- Check whether the workload remains stable across repeated runs, not just a single simple page.
- Increase sessions only if measured headroom allows it. If memory pressure, swapping, or restarts appear, return to serial execution or move to a host with suitable resources.
- Keep browser sessions bounded and confirm that old sessions are closed; leftover processes can distort measurements.
Selenium Grid has configuration controls for larger deployments, but a single-host screenshot job does not need a Hub/Node topology until parallel execution is necessary. See the Grid configuration options when scaling.

Can I run Selenium in Docker on a VPS in India?
Yes, provided the VPS can run the selected container image and has adequate resources for the measured workload. India affects where you choose to host the server—not the WebDriver screenshot API. Evaluate region, latency, data-residency needs, CPU architecture, memory limits, bandwidth, cost, and operational support directly with the provider. No particular Indian provider or plan is established here.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Before deployment, verify the VPS architecture and the image’s current browser/architecture matrix. If your test client is outside the container, publish or route the Grid endpoint appropriately; do not expose an unauthenticated Grid service to the public internet.
How do I keep versions and runs repeatable?
- Pin a full Selenium browser image tag so browser and Grid versions do not silently float between runs.
- Keep Chrome and ChromeDriver aligned at the major-version level, as described in Selenium’s Chrome documentation. Selenium’s page says Selenium 4 is compatible with Chrome v75 and newer; recheck current browser support when upgrading.
- Check the Grid health interface at port 4444 or
/status, and inspect container logs alongside host monitoring when a run fails. - Store screenshots, logs, and other artifacts on a mounted persistent path if the runner container is disposable. Check free disk space and file ownership.
Why does Chrome crash in a Docker container?
Start by separating memory pressure from startup and compatibility problems. Inspect host and container limits, available shared memory, browser/driver versions, logs, and whether the test is actually running headless.

Chrome exits or crashes during a run
- Check host memory, container limits, swap activity, and whether concurrent sessions are consuming the available headroom.
- Check browser and driver compatibility, including Chrome and ChromeDriver major versions.
- Review shared-memory configuration. SeleniumHQ documents
--shm-size=2gas a known workaround but says the value is arbitrary and should be tuned. - Do not treat
--disable-dev-shm-usageas a universal memory fix. It changes where shared-memory files are used and may move the constraint rather than remove it.
Startup fails after disabling Xvfb
Confirm that the browser has a headless option enabled. Disabling Xvfb while launching a browser that still expects a display can cause startup errors.
Tests fail or become unstable when run together
Run them serially, check for lingering sessions, and inspect memory and CPU under representative load. Only restore parallel execution after measuring the target workload.
The image will not start on an ARM server
Check the current Docker Selenium architecture/browser matrix and choose a tag published for that architecture. Do not assume emulation will have normal performance or stability; consult the project README’s architecture guidance.
