Use Playwright Test with a separate project for each browser engine—Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit—and give each project its own reviewed screenshot baseline. Add toHaveScreenshot() assertions for the page or component states that matter. This lets you compare each browser with its own expected rendering instead of treating cross-browser images as pixel-identical.
Set up a screenshot test for each browser engine
Playwright Test provides screenshot assertions that create reference images on an initial run and compare later runs against them. Configure Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit as separate projects when all three engines are in scope. The project name is included in snapshot naming, so the browser projects have distinct baselines. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide and TestProject API documentation.
Add the assertion
For example, create a test such as tests/home.spec.ts:
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('home page visual appearance', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('home.png');
});
Here, / assumes your Playwright configuration supplies a baseURL. If it does not, navigate to the full application URL instead. This assertion captures the page and compares it with the reference for the current test and project. Playwright documents the assertion and its options in the PageAssertions API.

Configure projects
Add one project per engine in playwright.config.ts. This example uses Playwright’s bundled browser engines; align the exact project configuration with the Playwright version and browser channel used by your repository:
import { defineConfig } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
projects: [
{ name: 'chromium', use: { browserName: 'chromium' } },
{ name: 'firefox', use: { browserName: 'firefox' } },
{ name: 'webkit', use: { browserName: 'webkit' } },
],
});
Playwright’s chromium project targets the Chromium engine; it does not by itself promise to select every branded Google Chrome channel. If your requirement is specifically branded Chrome, verify the channel configuration supported by the Playwright version installed in your project. The browser engines are separate rendering targets, so maintain and review a baseline for each project rather than expecting Firefox, WebKit, and Chromium images to match one another.
Generate and review the reference images
-
Run the tests with
npx playwright test. On an initial run, Playwright creates reference screenshots for the configured projects. -
Inspect the generated images before accepting them. Confirm that each image shows the intended state and that the browser-specific differences are understood.

Commit the reviewed snapshots with the test code. By default, snapshots are stored in a per-test snapshot directory; Playwright’s project and configuration APIs also support snapshot path templates if your team needs a different organization.
-
When a visual test later fails, examine the expected image, actual image, and diff. Update the baseline only after deciding that the change is intentional.
For an intentional visual change, update references with npx playwright test --update-snapshots, review the changed images, and commit the reviewed baselines. The command and baseline workflow are documented in the visual comparisons guide.
Make captures repeatable
A screenshot assertion can only distinguish a product change from rendering noise when the tested state and runtime are controlled. Start by making the page state deterministic: use stable test data, wait for the content relevant to the assertion, and keep the viewport and project configuration consistent. There is no single viewport or data strategy that fits every application; choose values that represent the states you need to protect.

Playwright warns that rendering can vary by host operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, headless mode, and other factors. Its visual comparisons documentation therefore recommends running in the same environment used to create the baselines. Keep browser builds and operating environments aligned between baseline capture and CI comparison as far as your setup permits.
Neutralize irrelevant variation
For known animation or dynamic-content issues, Playwright supports screenshot options for animation handling and custom screenshot stylesheets that can hide or neutralize volatile elements. The assertion API also supports pixel-difference thresholds such as maxDiffPixels; consult the PageAssertions API for the options available in your installed version.
Prefer removing a known source of nondeterminism from the capture when practical. Set a tolerance only after inspecting real diffs: a broad threshold can hide a meaningful layout change. A threshold is a decision about which pixel differences your team will accept, not proof that a mismatch is harmless.
Choose browser and viewport coverage deliberately
Run the same user-visible state in every engine that your product needs to support, then compare each result with that engine’s own baseline. Add viewport variants when responsive behavior matters. Every additional project and state creates more reference images to review, so select combinations based on the risks your application needs to catch rather than multiplying configurations without a clear purpose.

Troubleshoot screenshot failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| A test fails after an operating-system or browser-runtime change. | Rendering can change with the host OS, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, or headless mode. | Check whether the baseline and comparison environments still align. Inspect the expected, actual, and diff images before deciding whether to restore the environment or review and update the baseline. |
| The image differs between runs without a code change. | The page may capture before relevant content is ready, use changing data, or contain animations or volatile elements. | Stabilize the test data and capture timing. Use Playwright’s animation handling or screenshot stylesheet options for known sources of irrelevant variation. |
| A change appears in one engine but not the others. | The engines render independently, or the test state or runtime differs for that project. | Compare the result with that engine’s own baseline. Verify its project settings and runtime; do not compare it against another engine’s snapshot. |
| A baseline update appears to make failures disappear. | The reference may have been replaced without determining whether the difference was intentional. | Review the images and diff, establish that the visual change is expected, then commit the updated snapshots as a reviewed code change. |
| A tolerance is masking a visible regression. | The accepted pixel-difference threshold may be too permissive. | Inspect the actual differences and tighten the threshold or remove the tolerance if it is not justified by the expected variation. |
Or skip the browser setup
If you need a rendered screenshot rather than a Playwright regression test with versioned baselines, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request screenshot API and an MCP server. A screenshot request does not replace browser-specific baseline assertions in your test suite.
For example, using the API’s documented cURL form:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for request options. Before capture, it can accept cookie or consent banners like a visitor and remove more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify the page verdict and whether the request was billed. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots.
