How to Run Scheduled Bulk Website Screenshots with GitHub Actions

Use a JSON URL list and a cron-triggered GitHub Actions workflow to capture multiple websites, tune browser readiness, and save screenshots for later review.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To capture multiple websites on a schedule, put the URLs in a JSON file, add a GitHub Actions workflow with a cron trigger, and run a browser screenshot step that saves images to a known directory. Add workflow_dispatch for manual runs. The schedule must be on the repository’s default branch; GitHub’s scheduled workflows use UTC unless you set an IANA timezone.

Set up a URL list and screenshot workflow

A reusable screenshot action is a quick way to process a list without writing browser automation yourself. The following example follows the input names and configuration shape documented by guibranco/github-screenshot-action. It is third-party software, not a GitHub-certified action; review its source, release tag, permissions, and maintenance before using it.

1. Create the website list

At the repository root, create sites.json as a JSON array. Give each capture a stable name and a URL; the documented action uses the name for the image filename.

2. Add the workflow

Create .github/workflows/website-screenshots.yml and commit it to the repository’s default branch. This example runs every six hours and also supports manual dispatch:

          retries: '2'
          timeout_ms: '20000'
          wait_until: networkidle2

The action documentation’s example uses five parallel captures, two retries, a 20,000 ms per-site timeout, and a screenshots/ output directory. These are example settings, not universally suitable recommendations. The version shown is an example tag, not a claim that it is current or independently tested. Check the project and Marketplace for the current release before pinning it; at the time reflected in the available documentation, the repository listed Node.js 24+ as a development prerequisite and Marketplace showed v2.1.11 as latest. See the project README and Marketplace listing.

3. Run and verify a capture

After committing, open the repository’s Actions tab, select Website screenshots, and choose Run workflow to test it manually. On a successful run, inspect the job log and the configured output directory. If the action is configured to push files or open a pull request, review those outputs as well. For artifact-only retention, configure an artifact upload step appropriate to your retention needs; the workflow above does not itself define artifact retention.

Schedule runs with cron

GitHub Actions schedules use five-field POSIX cron syntax. GitHub documents a minimum interval of five minutes. Schedules run in UTC by default, can specify an IANA timezone, and run against the latest commit on the default branch. The workflow file therefore needs to exist on that branch for scheduled execution. See GitHub’s schedule event documentation.

Expression Schedule
0 */6 * * * At minute 0 every six hours
0 0 * * * Daily at midnight UTC when no timezone is specified
0 8 * * 1 Monday at 08:00 UTC when no timezone is specified

These examples are also used in the screenshot action’s published guidance. To run at a local business hour, set a supported IANA timezone in the workflow schedule rather than assuming UTC matches local time. Daylight-saving transitions can affect the result: if a scheduled time falls in a skipped spring-forward hour, GitHub advances it to the next valid time. A recurring schedule plus workflow_dispatch gives operators a manual run option without changing the cron.

Tune readiness, parallelism, and capture shape

Choose a page-ready condition

The action documents four wait modes, each reflecting a different point at which navigation is treated as ready:

  • UPGRADED COOLING FAN - The G3 Ultra has upgraded the cooling fan to reduce fan noise and thermals. We are using an upgraded thermal paste as well to help reduce heat on the CPU.
  • domcontentloaded: the HTML has been parsed; useful when early rendering is enough.
  • load: the page’s load event has fired after page resources load.
  • networkidle2: waits for network activity to quiet while allowing some requests to remain; it may be more suitable for pages with persistent analytics or connections.
  • networkidle0: waits for zero active network requests. Persistent analytics or WebSocket traffic can keep requests active and cause this mode to time out.

Set the condition based on how each site renders, then inspect whether screenshots are complete and whether runs time out. The action documentation describes these modes; it does not establish one as best for every site.

Set concurrency and timeouts conservatively

The documented inputs include concurrency, retry count, and per-site timeout. More parallel captures can reduce elapsed time, but also increase simultaneous browser and network work on the runner. Begin with modest concurrency and adjust after observing run duration, failures, and runner resource use. Retries can recover from transient failures but add work when a site consistently fails; increase timeouts only when the target page needs longer to become ready.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose full-page or square captures

Square mode clips the capture to a square viewport and is mutually exclusive with full-page capture. Use square output when consistent thumbnails matter; use full-page capture when the complete long page matters. Decide before generating a history, since changing capture shape can make successive images harder to compare.

Save results and decide whether to open pull requests

For simple archival use, write images to a predictable directory and choose a retention or cleanup policy that keeps repository size manageable. If the images should be reviewed as visual changes, the action documents pushing screenshots to a dedicated branch and opening a pull request. Its listed full functionality requires contents: write and pull-requests: write. The repository’s Actions settings must also allow workflows to create pull requests when using the classic GITHUB_TOKEN.

Grant only what the workflow needs. A job that merely creates files for artifact storage should not receive write permissions for branch pushes or pull requests. Review the action’s current permission requirements and configure the workflow’s token permissions narrowly.

Choose a reusable action or custom browser code

A reusable action reduces the amount of workflow code to maintain; writing a workflow around Playwright or Puppeteer gives you more control over browser logic and site-specific behavior but leaves browser setup, retries, and output handling to you. The available project documentation establishes the action’s advertised options, not comparative screenshot accuracy or reliability across tools.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choose a reusable action when its URL-list format, wait modes, concurrency, retries, and output behavior fit your needs.
  • Choose custom browser automation when you need site-specific interaction or logic beyond the reusable action’s documented controls.
  • Plan output retention separately from capture: repository commits, pull requests, and job artifacts have different review and storage implications.
  • Use a pull request only when people need to inspect or approve generated changes; it requires broader token permissions than a capture-only job.

Troubleshoot missed schedules and failed captures

  • No scheduled run appears: confirm the workflow file is committed to the default branch. Scheduled runs use that branch’s latest commit.
  • The run starts at an unexpected local time: cron is UTC unless an IANA timezone is configured. Recheck the timezone and account for daylight-saving changes.
  • A very frequent schedule does not run as expected: GitHub’s documented minimum schedule interval is five minutes.
  • Navigation times out: the site may load slowly or have persistent network activity. Try a less strict wait condition such as networkidle2 instead of networkidle0, or tune the per-site timeout after checking the logs.
  • Images are missing or incomplete: the selected readiness condition may fire before the relevant content appears. Choose a more suitable wait mode and verify the resulting captures; the documented configuration also exposes timeout and retry controls.
  • Pull request creation fails: check that the job has the required write permissions and that repository Actions settings allow workflows to create pull requests. Remove those permissions if the workflow does not need to publish changes.
  • Output is not visible after the run: confirm the configured output directory and whether the workflow commits results, opens a pull request, or uploads an artifact. The example workflow only specifies a local output directory.

Or skip the browser setup

If you want a hosted screenshot call instead of managing a browser on a runner, ScreenshotNeo accepts one GET request with a URL and returns a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF. Cookie banners are accepted before capture, and 60+ known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets can be removed; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, with response headers identifying the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 screenshots. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

For a GitHub Actions integration, store the key as a repository secret and pass it to the request step as an environment variable rather than committing it in the workflow. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo: 1,000 free screenshots a month, no card required.
