Reg-suit does not determine which application routes are affected by changed source files. To run visual comparisons only for changed pages, add route selection to your CI screenshot-generation step: diff the pull request’s intended base and head, map changed paths to affected routes, capture those routes into Reg-suit’s configured actual-image directory, and then run the normal npx reg-suit run flow. Reg-suit compares supplied screenshots; the route-to-file mapping is application-specific.
What Reg-suit does—and what it does not do
Reg-suit is a command-line visual regression testing tool. Its documented run flow handles expected-snapshot synchronization, image comparison, publishing, and optionally notifications. Its Git hash key-generation plugin uses the Git branch graph to determine which commit to compare against. The documented workflow does not automatically map changed source files in a pull request to affected application routes.

Its documented inputs and options concern image comparison and reporting; they do not provide a pull-request changed-route filter. - Choose the comparison revisions. Decide which base and head commits the check should use. Ensure the CI checkout includes the commits needed both to calculate the file diff and for Reg-suit’s Git hash plugin. Reg-suit’s GitHub Actions example checks out full history with
fetch-depth: 0; its README also documents a detached-HEAD workaround for CI environments. - Calculate changed source paths. In the pull-request job, compare the chosen revisions and collect changed paths. Make the base/head interpretation explicit rather than assuming every diff method yields the same list.
- Map paths to routes. Apply rules that reflect your application’s dependency structure. A route’s output can depend on more than its page file: shared components, layouts, global styles, and data dependencies may affect many pages. Reg-suit does not provide this application-specific mapping.
- Capture only selected routes. Generate screenshots for those routes into the actual-image directory configured for your workflow. Keep the filenames and directory conventions aligned with the expected snapshots so the comparison can pair the intended images.
- Run the ordinary Reg-suit flow. Invoke
npx reg-suit runafter screenshot generation. Reg-suit then performs its documented synchronization, comparison, publication, and any configured notification steps. - Define empty and missing-image behavior. Decide what the job should do if no routes are selected, or if a selected route has no corresponding expected image. These are application-level policy decisions; the project documentation does not prescribe one universal behavior.
Design route selection carefully
Start with an explicit dependency map
A simple rule can map a page-specific source path to one route, but shared code needs broader handling. For example, a change to a global stylesheet or shared navigation component may affect many routes even when no route-specific file changed. Maintain the mapping alongside your app’s routing and dependency conventions, and review it when those conventions change.

For changes whose impact is difficult to narrow reliably, prefer a conservative rule that captures a broader set of routes over a false assumption that a shared change affects only one page. The trade-off is more capture and comparison work in exchange for less risk of missing a visual regression.
Handle renames and deletions deliberately
A renamed file may appear as a rename or as a deletion plus an addition, depending on the diff process and options. A deleted route may no longer be capturable, but its old expected snapshot may still need an intentional cleanup or review. Decide how the selector treats both sides of a rename and how the workflow reports routes that were removed; do not silently treat every changed path as a valid live route.

Use the intended pull-request base
GitHub notes that pull-request pages and compare pages can calculate changed files from different merge bases. If the base branch moves after a pull request is opened, two ways of calculating the diff may select different files. Choose the base/head interpretation intended for the check and use it consistently for route selection. See GitHub’s documentation on comparing branches in pull requests for the distinction.
Configure pull-request feedback
The Reg-suit README documents GitHub notification integrations through its GitHub app and notifier plugin, including commit-status and pull-request-comment feedback. It also lists notifier plugins for GitLab, Slack, and Chatwork. Choose the integration that matches your repository and verify its current setup in the project documentation.

reg-actions is a separate project that documents a GitHub Actions route for visual regression reporting and pull-request comments. It may be an alternative reporting integration, but it does not mean the core Reg-suit CLI automatically derives affected application routes.
Troubleshoot common failures
- Unexpected routes are missing: Check whether changed shared components, layouts, styles, or data sources expand to all dependent routes in your mapping.
- The diff selects different paths than expected: Confirm the exact base and head revisions, and whether your method follows the pull request’s intended merge-base interpretation. Also inspect rename and deletion handling.
- Reg-suit cannot find or pair screenshots: Check that selected screenshots were written to the configured actual-image directory and that their names match the expected snapshot conventions.
- The Git hash plugin cannot identify the intended comparison commit: Confirm that CI has the required commit history and that the checkout state is handled as described in Reg-suit’s GitHub Actions documentation, including its detached-HEAD guidance where relevant.
- No route is selected: Define an explicit policy for an empty selection—such as reporting that no visual routes were affected or failing when the result is unexpected—rather than relying on undocumented behavior.
- A selected route has no expected image: Decide whether to create a baseline, flag the route for review, or treat it as an error. Reg-suit’s general workflow does not establish a universal policy for this application-level case.
