How to Run Qwen-Image 2.1 on a Mac in 2026: Local Image Generation and Editing

Qwen-Image 2.1 can run locally on Apple Silicon, but Mac workflows vary: compare documented text-to-image and editing routes, requirements and measured timings.

Yes—you can run Qwen-Image 2.1 locally on an Apple Silicon Mac, but the documented Mac routes differ: a Core ML command-line workflow and an MLX/stable-diffusion.cpp project document text-to-image, while separate MPS Studio and stable-diffusion.cpp instructions cover editing. Qwen’s official Diffusers examples target CUDA, so they are not a ready-made Mac setup. Choose a route based on whether you need generation or editing, and check its hardware, storage and current setup instructions before downloading model files.

What Qwen-Image 2.1 does—and what “local” means

Qwen describes Qwen-Image 2.1 as a unified text-to-image and image-editing model with a 7B-parameter visual-generation component. Its model card also lists native transparent RGBA generation and editing, plus support for up to 10 reference images. Those are the publisher’s stated capabilities, not an independent quality evaluation. Qwen’s model card describes the model as “a unified text-to-image generation and image editing model in the Qwen family.”

Running locally means the model inference runs on your Mac rather than being sent to a hosted image-generation service. It does not mean setup is necessarily simple: runtimes may require large model downloads, Python packages, compilation, or particular Apple Silicon and macOS versions.

Core ML command-line project Text-to-image; includes prompt embeddings for an initial image without separately configuring the text encoder. Project documentation Apple Silicon; macOS 15 or newer; Python 3.11–3.13. Six model packages total 14.74 GB, before dependencies and compilation space. Tested by project maintainer Devin Lai on an M5 MacBook Pro with 32 GB unified memory and macOS 27.0. Project documentation Maintainer reports 221–250 seconds for 40 denoising steps at 1024 × 1024 on that M5/32 GB machine. Timing excludes text encoding, model loading and prompt-prefix computation. MLX via mflux, or stable-diffusion.cpp Text-to-image in the documented repository. mflux uses official Diffusers weights; stable-diffusion.cpp uses Q4 GGUF weights. The README does not describe this project’s runners as an editing interface. Project README Metal Mac; its setup commands require Python 3.13, uv and cmake. Tested on an M4 Max MacBook Pro with 64 GB unified memory. README lists about 47 GB for official Diffusers weights, about 30 GB for the mflux route and about 11 GB for the GGUF route. Project README Maintainer reports about 6 seconds per 1024-resolution step with mflux and about 12.5 seconds per step with stable-diffusion.cpp; 20 steps at 1024 are summarized as about two minutes on the tested M4 Max. These project figures are not directly comparable with the Core ML timing. Project README

Run text-to-image with the Core ML command-line workflow

This is the clearest documented Mac command-line path if your goal is text-to-image and your system meets the project’s stated prerequisites. Follow the repository’s current README because download and setup commands can change.

  1. Check your Mac and software. Confirm that you have Apple Silicon, macOS 15 or newer, and Python 3.11–3.13. The project does not establish the memory needed for smaller machines.
  2. Allow disk space. The six model packages take 14.74 GB, before Python dependencies and space needed during compilation. First-run compilation and prompt-cache creation add time.
  3. Clone the project and create its environment. In Terminal, follow the repository’s documented commands to clone the Core ML project, create and activate a virtual environment, and install its requirements.
  4. Download the model packages. Run the README’s download step and wait for all required files to finish downloading.
  5. Generate an image. The documented quick start runs generate.py --out neon.png. Use the README’s current prompt syntax and options if you want to change the prompt or output settings.

Devin Lai reports that this Core ML path’s median denoising steps are 2.4–2.6× faster than PyTorch bf16/MPS in the project’s comparison. The same project reports 221–250 seconds for 40 denoising steps at 1024 × 1024 on an M5 MacBook Pro with 32 GB unified memory, running macOS 27.0. Those figures exclude text encoding, model loading and prompt-prefix computation; they are project measurements, not a complete first-run duration or a guarantee for other Macs. Use the MLX or stable-diffusion.cpp text-to-image project

The-Focus-AI project documents two Metal GPU runners: mflux with official Diffusers weights, and stable-diffusion.cpp with Q4 GGUF weights. Its README requires a Metal Mac, Python 3.13, uv and cmake. The README lists about 47 GB for official Diffusers weights, about 30 GB for the mflux route and about 11 GB for the GGUF route. It reports testing on an M4 Max MacBook Pro with 64 GB unified memory. The smaller GGUF footprint may be useful when disk space is limited, but these figures describe different model/runtime options, not a guarantee of equivalent output or quality. The repository describes text-to-image; use a separately documented editing route if editing is required.

Edit images locally on a Mac

Qwen’s official model documentation supports single-image editing and multi-reference composition with up to 10 images through the Diffusers image argument. However, the official sample commands direct the pipeline to CUDA. The model’s editing capability therefore does not, by itself, provide a ready-to-run Mac editing setup. stable-diffusion.cpp

The stable-diffusion.cpp Qwen 2.1 guide documents passing a reference image and an edit instruction. It notes that GGUF text-encoder editing requires vision weights. Its example command should not be copied to macOS without checking the project’s current build and model-file instructions: a Windows example does not establish a Mac command line.

What the published timings do—and do not—tell you

  • The Core ML time is for denoising steps, not the entire first run; it excludes text encoding, loading and prompt-prefix computation.
  • The mflux and stable-diffusion.cpp figures are per-step estimates from another project and a different tested Mac. A project README’s 20-step estimate is also tied to that setup.
  • There is no matched, independent comparison across these projects in the cited documentation. Differences in hardware, runtime, weights, settings and timing boundaries prevent a reliable overall speed ranking.

Check the license before commercial use

The Qwen model card displays the license label “qwen-research.” That label alone does not establish blanket commercial-use permission. Read the current model card and license terms before using generated images or the model in commercial work; do not infer rights beyond the actual license text.
