Run parallel Appium visual tests by giving each worker its own device or simulator and Appium session, isolating the driver resources that can collide, and capturing the same app state at repeatable checkpoints. Appium can take the screenshots; a separate visual-testing layer compares them with approved baselines. For hosted device execution, AWS Device Farm documents parallel Appium runs and screenshot collection. These are separate stages: collecting screenshots does not by itself establish that a service performs baseline comparison.
What a parallel Appium visual test needs
Think of the workflow as three parts: concurrent Appium sessions, deterministic screenshot checkpoints, and a comparison against approved images. A screenshot is only the input to visual testing; it does not tell you whether the screen changed in an acceptable way.

- Execution: a test worker controls a specific device or simulator through its own session.
- Capture: the worker saves an image at the same meaningful point in the test.
- Comparison: a visual-testing library or service compares the image with a baseline and reports differences for review.
The Appium project documentation describes both parallel server processes and parallel driver sessions within one server process. Choose the model supported by the platform driver and test runner you actually use; do not assume that a configuration for one driver applies to another.
Pin the Appium environment before adding workers
Appium 2 separates server and driver versioning. Updating the server does not imply that a platform driver was updated too. Record the versions used by every CI run so a visual change or session failure can be reproduced against the same stack.

Install the driver required for the target platform, then check that installed driver’s current parallel-testing documentation for capabilities and constraints. Avoid copying Appium 1 examples or old capability defaults without verifying they still apply.
Choose a concurrency model
Multiple Appium server processes
Run a separate server process for each worker when that fits the driver and runner configuration. Each worker must connect to its intended server and own its session. This can make process-level logs and failures easier to isolate, but it also means managing multiple server processes and their endpoints.
Multiple sessions in one server process
A single server process can also handle multiple driver sessions, where supported by the driver and client setup. The test runner still needs to associate each worker with its own session and target device. Never share a live driver object across concurrent test workers.
Recommended Free Tools
In either model, keep worker logs and screenshot output distinct. Include a worker or device identifier, test name, platform, and OS/device version in artifact paths or metadata so a failure can be traced to the session that produced it.

Assign devices and isolate platform resources
iOS with XCUITest
Give every session an unambiguous target. For a real device, use its distinct udid. For simulators, the XCUITest guide allows identification by a unique combination of device name and platform version. Concurrent sessions also need separate WebDriverAgent local ports and derived-data paths. If tests record an MJPEG video stream, make that server port unique as well; the capability reference notes that the default may be busy when other tests run in parallel.
For example, treat each worker’s values as a coordinated allocation rather than copying one shared set:
| Per-worker setting | Allocation rule |
|---|---|
| Device target | Unique device UDID, or a uniquely identified simulator |
| WebDriverAgent local port | Different port for each concurrent session |
| Derived-data path | Different path for each concurrent session |
| MJPEG server port | Different port when recording streams concurrently |
Use the exact capability names and accepted values documented for the XCUITest driver version installed in your environment.

The UiAutomator2 driver documentation confirms support for parallel testing. Assign a distinct Android device to each worker, and check the current parallel-testing guidance for the installed driver version to identify the port-related capabilities your setup needs. Do not rely on a guessed or deprecated Appium 1 port list: the current documentation available for this guide does not establish a complete list of Android port capability names and defaults.

Capture repeatable checkpoints and compare them
Stabilize the screen first
Capture only after the test has reached a known state. Use deterministic test data, wait for important content, let animations finish where possible, and control locale, theme, viewport, and other settings that affect rendering. A baseline should be associated with the app build and the device or OS class and other conditions that materially change appearance.
Save Appium screenshots as test artifacts
Appium clients expose screenshot capture through their driver APIs. In a Python test, a checkpoint can be saved with the driver’s screenshot method after the app is in the expected state:
from pathlib import Path
# driver is the Appium WebDriver session owned by this test worker.
# Call this only after the test has reached its stable visual checkpoint.
artifact_dir = Path("artifacts") / worker_id / test_name
artifact_dir.mkdir(parents=True, exist_ok=True)
screenshot_path = artifact_dir / "checkout.png"
assert driver.get_screenshot_as_file(str(screenshot_path))
Define worker_id and test_name in your test runner, and ensure each worker writes to a unique path. Submit the resulting image to your chosen comparison layer or retain it as an artifact for review. Appium’s capture call does not decide whether a pixel difference is acceptable.

Add a visual comparison layer
Applitools documents SDK integration with Appium and adding visual checkpoints to an existing Appium script. That is a vendor-described option, not a neutral comparison of visual-testing products. Confirm its current Appium support, pricing, and data-handling terms with the vendor before adoption. When evaluating any comparison layer, check native-screen and mobile-web support, baseline approval workflow, dynamic-region handling, artifact retention, data handling, parallel-device coverage, and current pricing.

Run on a device lab or hosted devices
Self-managed devices
A self-managed lab gives your team direct control over devices and their state, but you are responsible for provisioning and maintaining distinct devices or simulators and applying the driver-specific isolation rules above.
AWS Device Farm
AWS Device Farm documents managed parallel Appium execution on multiple devices, including hosted physical Android and iOS devices. Its Appium guide also describes screenshot collection: screenshots written using DEVICEFARM_SCREENSHOT_PATH are made available in the run report. Follow the service’s current packaging and runtime instructions for your test package.
Do not treat hosted execution as proof that baseline visual regression is included. AWS’s Appium screenshot guidance establishes screenshot collection, not that Device Farm itself compares screenshots against approved baselines. Check current geography and supported-device availability before planning a run around the service. The available service information does not establish a comparable current price or capacity basis for recommending hosted devices over a self-managed lab.

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API, not an Appium device driver or native-app screenshot comparator. It can complement this workflow when the visual target is a web page or browser-rendered URL; keep using Appium to capture native app screens and use a suitable baseline comparison layer for those images. For a URL screenshot, one GET request is enough. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

Troubleshoot parallel visual runs
- A session fails to start or attaches to the wrong device: verify that every active worker has a unique device identifier and that no device is assigned to two concurrent sessions.
- iOS sessions collide during startup: check that each session has a unique WebDriverAgent port and derived-data path; make the MJPEG port unique too if recording streams.
- Android parallel runs are unstable: check device assignment and the current parallel-testing guidance for the installed UiAutomator2 version, including any required per-session port allocation.
- Images differ unexpectedly: inspect the raw screenshots and confirm the tests captured the same app state under comparable locale, theme, device, and build conditions before treating a difference as a product defect.
- AWS report has no expected screenshot: verify that the test writes the image during the run using the documented
DEVICEFARM_SCREENSHOT_PATHconvention and that the test completed the capture step. - A driver update changes results: compare the recorded server and driver versions separately, then reproduce with the pinned stack before attributing the change to the app.
Plan parallelism without guessing at speed or cost
There is no universal worker count or speedup established for Appium parallel runs. Capacity depends on the devices, driver configuration, test workload, and any limits imposed by the local lab or hosted service. Start with the number of distinct targets and isolated resources you can support, then raise concurrency while checking session stability, artifact association, and total execution cost.
For self-managed versus hosted execution, compare device and OS coverage, setup and maintenance burden, control over device state, CI integration, artifact retention, geographic availability, concurrency limits, and total cost. The available service documentation confirms AWS managed parallel execution but does not provide enough comparable current price or capacity information to declare it less expensive or faster than a local lab.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Appium compare screenshots with a baseline by itself?
No. Appium captures screenshots; a visual comparison library or service performs the baseline comparison.
Can I use ScreenshotNeo for a native iOS or Android screen?
No. ScreenshotNeo captures website URLs; use Appium for native device screenshots.
Should I run one Appium server per test worker?
Not necessarily. Appium documents both multiple server processes and multiple sessions in one process; follow your platform driver’s current supported configuration.
