To use OpenRouter models in OpenCode, create an OpenRouter API key, connect it in OpenCode with /connect, then choose a model with /models. In OpenCode Desktop, connect OpenRouter in Settings and use the model picker; if the catalog does not appear, restart the app. Configuration files are optional for a basic connection, and their syntax depends on your OpenCode version.
Connect OpenRouter to OpenCode
The terminal workflow is the shortest route: create a key, connect the provider, and select a model. OpenRouter’s OpenCode integration guide documents the same sequence, while OpenCode’s provider guide explains its credential and model commands.
- Install or launch OpenCode. Use the installation method for your operating system; the official integration guide links platform-specific options rather than prescribing one universal install command.
- Create an API key. Sign in to the OpenRouter dashboard and create a key. OpenRouter’s guide describes keys beginning with
sk-or-v1-. Treat the full value as a secret: paste your own key into OpenCode, and do not put it in shared examples or public repositories. - Open the project in OpenCode. In a terminal, change to the project directory and start OpenCode there.
- Connect the provider. Enter
/connect, select OpenRouter, and paste the API key when prompted. - Select a model. Enter
/modelsand choose an available OpenRouter model.
OpenCode stores credentials added through /connect in ~/.local/share/opencode/auth.json. That file contains authentication data; avoid sharing it or committing it to source control.
Connect in OpenCode Desktop
In the desktop app, open Settings or the provider command, choose OpenRouter, select API-key authentication, and confirm with your key. Then choose a model from the session view or command palette. OpenRouter’s integration guide says the desktop provider catalog loads at app startup, so fully quit and reopen OpenCode Desktop if the models do not appear immediately.

Choose a model that fits the task
Use /models in the terminal interface or the desktop model picker to browse the models available to your connection. Check the model’s capabilities against the work you intend to do, compare its current cost, and consider any provider-routing preferences you need. The available catalog and prices can change; consult OpenRouter’s live model catalog instead of relying on a static ranking or price list.
If you know the model you want but cannot find it, copy its exact identifier from the catalog. Model names and slugs are not necessarily interchangeable; preserve a leading ~ when the catalog’s alias uses one.

When to add configuration
You usually do not need to edit a configuration file to connect or select a preloaded model. Configuration is useful when you need to add a model that is absent from the picker, set a default model, or specify provider-routing behavior. OpenCode’s documented examples use different structures, so follow the page matching your installed version rather than combining snippets.
OpenCode provider-guide configuration
The terminal example in OpenCode’s provider guide uses opencode.json and a provider.openrouter.models map to add models by ID. It also documents per-model routing options such as options.provider.order and allow_fallbacks. These routing settings are optional advanced controls, not prerequisites for using OpenRouter.

OpenCode v2 provider configuration
The newer v2 provider page describes supplying OPENROUTER_API_KEY to the OpenCode server or connecting an account. Its example selects a model with a full provider-prefixed ID, such as openrouter/anthropic/claude-sonnet-4, and uses a plural providers configuration structure. The v2 page also advises retaining OpenRouter’s native runtime when overriding an endpoint or using an OpenRouter-compatible gateway, so OpenRouter-specific request and reasoning behavior remains available.

Troubleshoot missing credentials or models
- OpenCode reports an authentication error: run
opencode auth listto check whether OpenCode has a provider credential, then verify that the key is valid in OpenRouter’s key settings. If the key is missing or invalid, connect again with/connect. - The desktop model picker is empty after connecting: fully quit and reopen OpenCode Desktop to reload the provider catalog.
- A specific model is not listed: verify the exact slug in OpenRouter’s model catalog, including any leading
~alias prefix. In the provider-guide configuration format, add an absent model underprovider.openrouter.modelsand restart OpenCode; use this format only if it matches your version. - A configured v2 model cannot be resolved: check that the top-level model value includes the
openrouter/prefix and the full OpenRouter model ID, as shown in the v2 provider documentation. - You are unsure which config syntax applies: do not mix the older provider-guide fields with the v2 structure. Identify your installed version and follow its matching official provider page.
