Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can run an open-weight AI model on your own computer so its prompts and documents are processed locally rather than sent to a remote inference provider. That boundary depends on the runtime and features you use: finding and downloading models, update checks, cloud modes, integrations, and a network-accessible local server may still involve other systems or people.
What “open-weight” and “local” mean
Open-weight means a model’s weights are available to download under that particular model’s license. It does not mean every model has the same license, or that the software around a model is open source. Check the model card and license for the model you intend to use.

A local runtime—such as LM Studio, Ollama, or llama.cpp—loads a compatible model and performs inference on your computer. Model formats and runtime compatibility vary. Hugging Face’s local-app guide describes using models with tools including Ollama and llama.cpp, and notes the local-inference privacy benefit: “You won’t be sending your data to a remote server.” That describes local inference, not every step or feature in an AI application.
Choose a setup that fits your workflow
| Option | Interface and capabilities | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| LM Studio | Desktop application for macOS, Windows, and Linux; can download and run models and supports local document workflows. | Check the chosen model’s requirements and runtime compatibility. Model search, downloads, and update checks need internet access. |
| Ollama | A command-line application for running local models. | Check model-format compatibility, your operating system and hardware, and whether you are using local or cloud-hosted features. |
| llama.cpp | Offers command-line, server, and Python library interfaces and supports multiple hardware types. | Check model-format compatibility and hardware support; a server interface also requires attention to who can connect to it. |
These tools offer different interfaces and capabilities, not a documented speed ranking. Hardware needs depend on the specific model and workload; the available sources do not establish a universal RAM, VRAM, or GPU recommendation. Review current requirements before deciding whether your existing computer is suitable.

Beginner route: run a model with LM Studio
- Install LM Studio. Get the application and follow its current installation steps for your operating system.
- Choose a model. Review its model card, license, compatibility, and system requirements before downloading it.
- Download the model files. Model discovery and downloads require an internet connection.
- Test with non-sensitive prompts. Confirm that the model loads and produces useful responses before using private documents or information.
- Test the intended workflow offline. Disconnect from the network and try local chat or document processing. LM Studio says downloaded-model chat and document workflows can work without connectivity. This is a practical check of that workflow, not a security audit.
LM Studio’s Offline Operation documentation says, “Once you have an LLM onto your machine, the model will run locally and you should be good to go entirely offline.” Its documentation also says content entered when chatting with local LLMs stays on the device and describes local document/RAG processing. Keep those statements scoped to downloaded models and local functions: searching for models, downloading models or runtimes, and checking for updates require internet access.
More configurable route: Ollama or llama.cpp
Choose one of these when you prefer a command-line workflow or need interfaces such as a local server or Python library. Hugging Face provides guidance for using compatible models with Ollama or llama.cpp; follow the specific model card’s “Use this model” instructions rather than assuming one command or file format works for every model. Before putting sensitive material into a server-based workflow, determine which devices or users can reach that server and restrict access accordingly.

- Compact, Connected Design: Includes a 2TB M.2 SSD, 10GbE LAN, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.4, USB-C connectivity, and HDMI 2.1b.
For any runtime, verify that the exact model format is supported, the runtime supports your operating system and hardware, and the features you plan to use are local. A graphical interface, local API, document workflow, or server can have different network behavior from basic local chat.

Local inference can keep prompts on your machine when the selected runtime and enabled features process them locally. It does not, by itself, prove that every part of the application is offline or secure. Separate the inference path from model discovery and downloads, update checks, cloud features, hosted endpoints, integrations, and server access.

- Model and runtime downloads: These involve retrieving files over a network. LM Studio says model search, model and runtime downloads, and update checks require internet access.
- Cloud or hosted inference: If you select a cloud-hosted model or endpoint, content may be processed remotely. Check the feature’s terms and data-handling documentation rather than applying local-chat claims to it.
- Telemetry and metadata: A vendor may describe content handling separately from device or usage metadata. Read the current policy for the runtime and feature you use.
- Local servers and integrations: A local server may be reachable from other devices on your network, and integrations may communicate with external services. Check access controls and each integration’s data flow.
Ollama’s Privacy Policy, last updated March 2026, states that Ollama does not collect, store, transmit, or access prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content processed locally. The same policy says it may collect limited device and usage metadata and treats cloud-hosted model use separately, with content processed transiently. These are statements in the vendor’s policy, not an independent network audit.
Before using sensitive data, read the runtime’s current privacy documentation and the model’s card and license. If the workflow has a server or integrations, check who can connect and what those services receive. An offline test can help confirm that a particular local workflow runs without a connection, but it cannot establish the security of the computer or every feature.

Example: OpenAI’s gpt-oss models
OpenAI says its gpt-oss models can run on infrastructure users control, with inference stacks including Ollama, vLLM, and llama.cpp. OpenAI also says these models are not served through the OpenAI API or ChatGPT. The gpt-oss weights are described as Apache 2.0, subject to the gpt-oss usage policy. Those licensing and deployment details apply to this model family, not to open-weight models generally. Self-hosting still carries compute, storage, or hosting costs.
