How to Run Multiple Worlds on One Minecraft Server With Multiverse

A complete Multiverse guide for Java servers: install the plugin, import existing folders, create worlds, set spawns, restrict access, separate inventories and safely remove or clone worlds.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Yes—you can run several Minecraft worlds from one Java Edition server. Install Multiverse-Core on a Bukkit-based server such as Paper or Spigot, import existing world folders with /mv import or generate new worlds with /mv create, then control travel, permissions, inventories and portals with Multiverse commands and its optional addons. The workflow below covers a safe setup, world design, access control and maintenance without moving players between separate server instances.

What Multiverse changes on a Minecraft server

Multiverse-Core is a Bukkit-family plugin that registers and manages multiple worlds in one Java server process. Players can move between a survival map, a creative test map, a Nether or End map and imported adventure worlds while the server keeps one player list, chat system and permission setup.

Multiverse-Core does not contain a separate terrain engine. Its documentation explains that it makes calls to the Bukkit API to create and manage worlds. The server software and Minecraft version therefore still determine whether a world can load and how much CPU, memory and storage it consumes.

There is no published universal maximum number of worlds or player capacity. Treat capacity as a property of your hardware, view distance, entity counts, plugins and world activity. Start with the worlds you need, monitor tick time and memory, and test additional worlds before opening them to a large player population.

Before installation: server, version and backup requirements

Use a compatible Java server

This procedure assumes a Java Edition server using the Bukkit plugin API, such as Paper or Spigot. Download a Multiverse-Core build that matches the Minecraft and server version you actually run. The project does not publish one universal compatibility matrix for every release, so check the requirements for the specific build and any addon you install.

  • Make sure you can stop and start the server and read its console output.
  • Have permission to place plugin files in the server’s plugins directory.
  • Keep enough disk space for every world folder, its region files, backups and future growth.
  • Use a permissions plugin if regular players will receive selected Multiverse capabilities.

Back up before touching world files

Stop the server and make a complete, restorable backup before copying a world, changing server versions, cloning a world or removing one. A backup should include the server configuration, plugin configuration and every world directory, not just the map you intend to edit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep existing folder names stable. If players need a friendlier name, use a Multiverse alias rather than renaming the physical folder; stable paths make future backups, scripts and troubleshooting much safer.

Install Multiverse-Core and verify that it loaded

  1. Stop the server cleanly.
  2. Place the Multiverse-Core plugin JAR in the server’s plugins directory.
  3. Start the server and watch the console for dependency, version or class-loading errors.
  4. After the server reaches its ready state, confirm that Multiverse commands are available to an operator or console user.
  5. Install only the optional addons your design requires, and use versions compatible with both your Multiverse-Core build and Minecraft server.

If the plugin fails to load, do not begin importing worlds. Check the console’s first error, verify the JAR is intended for your server version, and correct the issue before changing any world folders. A partially loaded plugin can leave you unsure whether a command changed configuration or merely failed.

Import an existing world folder

Importing is the right choice when you already have a world folder from another server, a backup or a downloaded map. Multiverse cannot infer whether an unregistered folder is a normal world, a Nether world or an End world, so you must identify the environment explicitly.

Import procedure

  1. Stop the server.
  2. Copy the complete world folder into the server’s main directory. Preserve the folder name and its contents.
  3. Start the server and wait until it is ready.
  4. From the console or with sufficient in-game permission, run /mv import WORLD ENV, replacing WORLD with the exact folder name and ENV with NORMAL, NETHER or END.
  5. Read the command response and console output. If the world uses a custom generator, provide the generator information required by the command reference and that generator’s documentation; never guess a generator value.
  6. Test the imported world before inviting players: teleport to it, inspect terrain and confirm that expected structures, gamerules and spawn data are present.

For example, a folder named old-survival that is an Overworld map would be imported with /mv import old-survival NORMAL. The folder name is case-sensitive on systems whose file systems distinguish case.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Import-specific pitfalls

  • Wrong environment: registering a Nether or End folder as NORMAL can produce incorrect world behavior. Stop, restore the backup and import it again with the correct environment.
  • Incomplete copy: missing region or data files can look like corrupted terrain. Re-copy the folder while the server is stopped.
  • Custom generator omitted: a world made with a generator may not reproduce correctly without its generator plugin and the required generator argument.
  • Unintended folder rename: changing the path after import can make the registered world unavailable. Keep the physical name and set a display alias instead.

Create a new world with Multiverse

Use /mv create when you want Multiverse to ask the Bukkit API for a newly generated world. Generation can take longer than importing because terrain and region files must be created; watch the console and avoid repeatedly issuing the command if the server is still working.

Basic creation command

/mv create NAME ENV

For example:

/mv create creative NORMAL

Replace NAME with the internal world name and select NORMAL, NETHER or END for the environment. Confirm the world appears and that you can teleport to it before making further changes.

Seeds and generators

The command accepts optional seed and generator arguments, for example:

/mv create NAME NORMAL -s SEED -g GENERATOR[:ID]

Use a seed when you need reproducible terrain. Use a generator only when the corresponding generator is installed and its required identifier is known. A custom generator must be compatible with the server and Multiverse version; an invented or misspelled identifier can cause creation to fail or produce a different world than intended.

Choose a world role before generating

  • Survival: keep a normal environment and decide whether it shares player data with other survival worlds.
  • Creative: generate a separate normal world, then assign its game mode and access permissions.
  • Nether or End: create the corresponding environment when you need an independent dimension rather than an automatically linked destination.
  • Testing: create a disposable world for redstone, plugin or command experiments and protect the production worlds from accidental changes.

Teleport between worlds and set safe spawns

Multiverse travel is explicit unless you add a portal addon. The simplest method is a command.

Purpose Command What it does
Teleport yourself /mv tp WORLD or /mvtp WORLD Moves the command sender to the named world.
Teleport another player /mv tp PLAYER WORLD Moves a specified player when the sender has the required permission and can access the destination.
Set the current world’s spawn /mv set spawn Records the command sender’s current position as that world’s Multiverse spawn.
Return to the current world’s spawn /mv spawn Moves the player to the spawn recorded for the world they are currently in.

Recommended spawn workflow

  1. Teleport to the world with /mv tp WORLD.
  2. Travel to a protected, well-lit arrival point with enough room for new players.
  3. Run /mv set spawn.
  4. Leave and return with /mv spawn to verify the location.
  5. Repeat for every public world and test with a non-operator account.

An administrator who teleports another player must themselves be able to access the destination. If a player cannot travel, check both world access and teleport permissions instead of repeatedly trying the command.

Control who can enter each world

By default, access is generally open unless you enable enforcement or otherwise restrict it. The permissions reference identifies multiverse.access.WORLD as the world-access node, where WORLD is replaced by the destination world name.

Essential permission categories

Capability Permission pattern Use
Enter a world multiverse.access.WORLD Grant access to a named destination when access enforcement is enabled.
Teleport yourself multiverse.teleport.self.TYPE Control self-teleport actions using the teleport type defined by the command reference.
Teleport another player multiverse.teleport.other.TYPE Allow staff to move other players, with destination access still applying.
World administration Documented create, import, modify, reload, spawn, unload, remove, delete and purge nodes Separate routine player abilities from destructive or configuration-changing operations.

Configure these nodes in the permissions plugin used by your server. If enforceaccess is enabled, each player needs access permission for every destination they should enter. Apply the smallest set of permissions that meets the role, then test with a non-operator account; operator status can mask a missing node.

Example access design

  • Give builders access to the creative world and its teleport action.
  • Give moderators the ability to teleport other players only after they have access to both the source and destination worlds.
  • Reserve import, delete, purge and other world-management nodes for trusted administrators.

Separate inventories, statistics and locations

Multiverse-Core alone does not provide a separate inventory for every world. If players should have different items, experience or survival state in different worlds, install Multiverse-Inventories and configure world groups.

Multiverse-Inventories can separate or share, according to its configuration, the following data:

  • Inventory contents and equipment
  • Player statistics
  • Last location
  • Hunger and health
  • Experience
  • Bed spawn data

Decide the sharing policy before players start moving items. A common design is to share data among a group of survival worlds while keeping creative or event worlds isolated. After configuring the addon, test both directions of travel with a disposable account: place an item in one world, change health or experience, travel, and confirm that the result matches your intended policy.

Do not assume that adding the addon automatically converts an existing player state exactly as you expect. Make a backup, read the addon configuration for your installed version and test with real player-like accounts before enabling the design on a live server.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use portals and separate Nether or End destinations

Custom portals

Command travel is sufficient for administrators and small groups. For player-facing navigation, Multiverse-Portals adds custom portal destinations and portal permission restrictions. Build and configure portals only after command teleportation works, because a portal cannot compensate for an incorrectly registered or inaccessible world.

One Nether or End per overworld

Multiverse-NetherPortals is the relevant addon when several overworlds need distinct Nether and End worlds rather than one shared dimension. Plan the mapping before opening portals: name each world clearly, decide which dimensions belong together, and test return travel and permissions for every pair.

Install only the addons your design needs. Verify each addon against the same Minecraft and server version as Multiverse-Core; mismatched builds can fail independently even when the core plugin appears healthy.

Apply different rules to different worlds

Multiverse can store per-world properties such as game mode, mob or entity spawning, PvP-related behavior, aliases and permission controls. This lets one server host worlds with different purposes without forcing one global rule set.

The basics documentation gives this example for disabling monsters in the current world:

/mv modify set monsters false

Use the equivalent documented modify options for the properties you need, and apply them while standing in or explicitly targeting the intended world according to the command syntax for your installed release. After each change, test the rule with a non-operator account and confirm that it did not affect another world.

Unload, remove, clone or delete a world safely

World lifecycle commands have different consequences. Choose the least destructive operation that solves the problem.

Command Effect on the running server Effect on the world folder
/mv reload Reloads Multiverse configuration. Does not delete the world folder.
/mv unload WORLD Unloads the world from memory. Leaves the folder and Multiverse configuration in place.
/mv remove WORLD Unloads the world and removes it from Multiverse’s configuration. Retains the folder so it can be imported again.
/mv delete WORLD followed by /mv confirm Unloads the world and removes its Multiverse configuration. Deletes the world folder after the required confirmation.
/mv clone WORLD NEWNAME Creates a copy of a world directory. Leaves the original and creates a second folder.

Safe deletion sequence

  1. Stop player activity in the target world and announce the maintenance window.
  2. Create and verify an external backup.
  3. Confirm the exact internal world name with your Multiverse configuration or world list.
  4. Run /mv delete WORLD only when you intend to remove the folder.
  5. Within the confirmation window, run /mv confirm.
  6. Check the console and filesystem before declaring the operation complete.

If you may need the map later, use /mv unload or /mv remove instead. An unload preserves registration; a remove preserves the folder but requires a future import to make it available again.

Plan a multi-world layout before inviting players

A reliable layout separates technical identity from player-facing names and assigns one purpose to each world. Write down the following for every world:

  • Internal folder name and optional display alias
  • Environment: NORMAL, NETHER or END
  • Imported or generated status, including seed or generator requirements
  • Who can enter and who can teleport others
  • Inventory and statistics sharing group
  • Spawn location and arrival safety checks
  • Game mode, PvP, mob and entity rules
  • Whether players use commands, portals or both
  • Backup schedule and the person responsible for destructive operations

When comparing two possible designs, evaluate imported versus generated maps, the environment type, shared versus isolated inventories, command travel versus portals, open versus permission-gated access, per-world rules and the resource cost of keeping worlds loaded. Do not choose a world count from a generic server-size chart; measure your own server under the player load and simulation settings you expect.

Troubleshooting checklist

The command is unknown

Confirm that the JAR is in plugins, restart the server and inspect the first startup error. Make sure you are using a Bukkit-based server and that the plugin build matches the server version. A reload cannot repair a plugin that never loaded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The imported world does not appear

Check the folder name, capitalization and location while the server is stopped. Re-run /mv import WORLD ENV with the correct environment. If the map uses a custom generator, install that generator and supply the required generator information instead of guessing.

A player cannot teleport

Check the destination name, multiverse.access.WORLD and the relevant self-teleport node. With enforceaccess enabled, access must be granted for each destination. For staff teleporting another player, verify the separate other-player teleport permission and the administrator’s own access.

Players carry items between worlds unexpectedly

Core does not create isolated inventories. Install and configure Multiverse-Inventories, define the intended world groups and test inventory, health, hunger, experience and location behavior with a non-production account.

A world takes a long time to start

Generation creates terrain and can take longer than importing. Watch the console rather than issuing duplicate create commands. For an existing map, verify that the copy completed and that the required generator or companion plugin is present.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A portal sends players to the wrong place

First verify direct command travel to the intended world. Then inspect the Multiverse-Portals destination and its permission restrictions. If the destination is a separate Nether or End world, confirm the Multiverse-NetherPortals mapping and access rules.

Launch checklist

  1. Back up the complete server while it is stopped.
  2. Install a version-compatible Multiverse-Core JAR and confirm a clean startup.
  3. Import existing folders with the correct environment, or create new worlds with the intended seed and generator.
  4. Set and test a safe spawn in each public world.
  5. Configure world access and teleport permissions, then test with a non-operator account.
  6. Install Multiverse-Inventories, Multiverse-Portals or Multiverse-NetherPortals only if the design needs them.
  7. Apply and test per-world game-mode, entity, mob and PvP rules.
  8. Document world names, aliases, sharing groups, backups and authorized administrators.
  9. Measure resource use under realistic activity before adding more worlds or opening the server to more players.

The Bottom Line

Multiverse lets one Java Bukkit-based server host multiple independent worlds, but a dependable setup depends on explicit environment registration, tested spawns, least-privilege permissions, the correct inventory and portal addons, and backups before every destructive operation.
