Mistral announced on October 6 that it plans to release the weights by the end of October, alongside technical details. Until those files, a license, and supported runtime instructions are published, treat local installation steps and hardware recommendations as unconfirmed. Can you run Mistral Large 4 locally now?
Not on the evidence available as of October 9, 2026. Mistral said the weights would be released by the end of October, with more architecture and technical information. That is a future release commitment, not confirmation that downloadable files are already available. Check the official announcement and Large 4 model documentation for release updates.

Mistral describes Large 4 as an open-weight, multimodal Mixture-of-Experts model. Its official documentation lists 1.05 trillion total parameters and a 1.6 billion-parameter vision encoder. The active-parameter figure is inconsistent: the October 6 announcement and one documentation page say 49 billion, while another official page says 52 billion. #1 Best Overall
- Local AI. No Waiting: AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 processor with Zen 5, RDNA 3.5, and XDNA 2 NPU enables local deployment of massive LLMs up to 100B parameters. 128GB unified memory (up to 96GB VRAM) ensures privacy, security, and near-zero latency.
- Desktop-Class Gaming: Radeon 8060S GPU delivers 11,130 Time Spy score. Black Myth: Wukong runs 80+ FPS at 1080p max settings. Cyberpunk 2077 and Horizon Forbidden West run smoothly – true AAA gaming power in a compact workstation.
- 128GB Quad-Channel Memory + Dual PCIe 4.0 SSD: 8×16GB LPDDR5x at 8000MHz provides massive bandwidth. Two M.2 2280 slots support up to 8TB total storage (4TB per slot). Perfect for local AI models, game libraries, and content creation.Ultimate
- Connectivity: Dual USB4 ports (40Gbps) support eGPU and DP 1.4. 2.5G RJ45 Ethernet and Wi-Fi 7 deliver blazing-fast networking. SD 4.0 card slot (300 MB/s) for quick file transfers. HDMI + DP + multiple USB-A ports cover all peripherals.
- Advanced Tri-Fan Cooling with Adjustable TDP: 3 copper heat pipes + 2 turbo fans + downward-blowing fan + large aluminum fins keep thermals under control. Switch between 55W (quiet), 85W (balanced), or 120W (performance) modes via OneXConsole.
The documentation lists a 1-million-token context, but that is not proof that a local runtime will support the same context or feature set. The reviewed official material does not establish a Large 4-specific license, local hardware requirement, or supported inference runtime. Do not infer these details from parameter counts or hosted-preview capabilities.
What to verify before installing
Once Mistral publishes the weights, use the model card, license, and runtime documentation to confirm each of the following before downloading or launching the model:
- Official artifacts: Find the official repository and check which weight variants are available, including whether reduced-precision or quantized files are provided.
- License: Read the model card and license file for usage restrictions; do not assume “open-weight” means unrestricted use.
- Supported runtime: Confirm the publisher’s recommended inference engine, minimum version, required model code, and companion libraries.
- System requirements: Look for stated accelerator type and count, memory, storage, host RAM, and download requirements.
- Working instructions: Use the release’s actual download and launch commands, with their prerequisites and tested software versions.
- Local capabilities: Check which modalities, context length, tools, and other features work in the local runtime; API support does not establish local support.
- Test conditions: Distinguish configurations the publisher or runtime maintainers actually tested from configurations that are merely expected to work.
Why there is no reliable hardware recommendation yet
Parameter counts alone cannot determine whether a particular GPU or workstation can run Large 4. Memory needs depend on details such as weight precision, runtime overhead, KV-cache requirements, and whether the model can be distributed across devices. No model-specific, independently usable hardware specification was established in the official material reviewed as of October 9, 2026. Choosing a GPU or server on that basis would be guesswork.

Not unless the instructions explicitly name Large 4 and the relevant software versions. Mistral’s mistral-inference repository contains installation and download examples for other models, but the reviewed repository material does not confirm Large 4 support. Its setup notes also say that xformers requires a GPU for installation; that is not evidence that installing the library enables Large 4 inference.
Mistral’s general inference overview says open-weight models can be downloaded from Hugging Face and hosted on customer hardware. This general guidance does not establish that Large 4 files are available there or that a particular engine supports them.
Quick Recap
What to do until the release
- Monitor Mistral’s announcement, model documentation, and inference repository for the weights, license, and explicit runtime instructions.
- After publication, confirm that the repository, model card, and runtime all refer to Large 4. Check version requirements and hardware guidance before selecting a machine.
- Follow the documented download and launch commands for the specific artifact you intend to use. Do not substitute generic commands for another Mistral model.
- Check the documentation for local context and modality support, then test with the versions and hardware you plan to use.
