You can run many Java ME (J2ME) feature-phone games on Android with J2ME Loader, an emulator—not an installer for Android APKs or arbitrary desktop-Java JAR files. The project lists Android 4.0 or later as its requirement. Whether a particular game works depends on the title, so check its compatibility notes before assuming a launch problem is caused by your phone.
What you need before you start
- An Android device meeting the project’s stated Android 4.0+ requirement.
- J2ME Loader, installed from its Google Play listing.
- The JAR file for a Java ME/MIDlet game. Use a file you have the right to use and obtain it from a source you trust; the cited sources do not establish that any game-download archive is safe or lawful.
A JAR extension alone does not prove a file is a J2ME game or that it is authentic. A desktop-Java archive, ZIP, or Android APK is not interchangeable with a Java ME game.
JAR and JAD: what is the difference?
A JAR contains the game application. A JAD is a Java ME application descriptor associated with a MIDlet suite; Oracle’s Java ME SDK guide demonstrates launching a MIDlet using a JAD descriptor: Oracle Java ME SDK 3.2 Developer’s Guide.
If your game came with a matching JAD, keep it alongside the JAR. The available J2ME Loader documentation does not establish that a separate JAD is required for every game, so do not treat the absence of one as proof the JAR is unusable.

How to load and launch a game
- Install J2ME Loader from its Google Play listing. Android may ask you to grant access when you choose a file; the prompt and app layout can vary by Android version.
- Open J2ME Loader and use the import or open control available in your installed version to select the game’s JAR. The project’s official pages do not document a current, universal button label or storage location.
- Choose the imported game in the app to launch it. If it starts, use the built-in virtual keyboard and that game’s settings to adjust controls or scaling as needed.
This process runs a Java ME title inside an emulator. It does not convert the JAR into an APK or install the game as a native Android app.
Check compatibility one title at a time
The J2ME Loader project describes support for most 2D games and 3D games with limitations, and links separate tested-game lists for touchscreen and non-touchscreen titles as well as a known-bugs list. Check the title in those lists before diagnosing a failure as a device issue: J2ME Loader project README and compatibility lists.

The project’s README and its Google Play listing differ on Mascot Capsule 3D games: the README mentions support, while the current store description warns that 3D support has limitations and says those games do not work. That disagreement is a reason not to assume compatibility for a specific title; the title-specific lists are more useful than a blanket promise.
For a practical compatibility check, look for whether the game is listed as tested or known to have bugs, whether its controls suit the virtual keyboard, and whether its display can be made usable with per-game settings. The project offers no controlled compatibility percentage, so its qualitative “most” claim is not a guarantee.

Fix common launch and gameplay problems
The file will not launch
Check that you selected a Java ME/MIDlet game JAR rather than an APK, desktop-Java archive, or unrelated ZIP. If a matching JAD was supplied, retain it. Then check the game’s entry in the project’s known-bugs and tested-game lists; the official sources do not provide a general file-validation procedure.
Controls feel wrong
Open the game’s individual settings and adjust the virtual keyboard layout. J2ME Loader documents both a built-in virtual keyboard and per-application settings. The sources reviewed do not establish external Bluetooth controller support.

Performance is slow
The project advises disabling filtering if it greatly reduces performance. Treat this as a developer troubleshooting tip, not a result from an independent benchmark.
Graphics flicker or scaling looks poor
For image flickering, the project suggests enabling “Immediate processing mode.” If the game is too large, too small, or poorly fitted to the screen, try its scaling and per-app configuration options. The documentation does not establish one resolution or scaling value that works for every game.

The game crashes, shows a black screen, or lacks features
Consult the title-specific compatibility and known-bugs lists. J2ME Loader’s broad support description is qualified, and a game may behave differently depending on its implementation or device behavior. The official sources do not provide a universal fix for crashes or missing functions.
