Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou can run Freqtrade continuously without a software subscription if you already have a suitable computer and internet connection. On Linux, a systemd service can monitor the bot and restart it after certain failures; Docker Compose offers a separate route that can start the trading service and restore it after a host reboot. Neither setup guarantees uninterrupted trading: power, network, exchange, credential, configuration, and strategy problems still need attention.
What “$0” and “self-healing” actually mean
Here, $0 means no additional software cost when you reuse an appropriate computer and internet connection. It does not include hardware, electricity, internet service, exchange fees, or other costs that depend on your circumstances. If you must buy a host or rent a VPS, the setup is no longer literally free.

Automatic recovery is also limited. A service manager or container runtime can restart a process or container after certain failures, but it cannot keep a computer powered during an outage, restore a broken internet connection, fix an exchange outage, repair invalid credentials, correct a bad configuration, or make a strategy profitable. Think of a watchdog as a way to recover from some process failures—not as a guarantee of 24/7 trading or positive returns.
Choose a deployment: systemd or Docker Compose
| Approach | Best fit | Recovery and watchdog | Data and remote access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Linux systemd service | A Linux computer you can leave running, with Freqtrade installed natively. | Freqtrade documents an sd_notify integration that lets systemd monitor the bot and restart it after failures according to the service configuration. This is the closest fit to a watchdog. It does not work when the bot runs inside Docker. [Freqtrade: Advanced Post-installation Tasks] |
Keep the working directory and user data in predictable locations, and back up configuration and database files. Protect remote FreqUI access with an SSH tunnel or VPN. |
| Docker Compose | A host compatible with Freqtrade’s official Docker workflow, especially if you prefer a container-managed install. | Run the trading service with docker compose up -d. Freqtrade’s quickstart describes this workflow as providing proper service startup and restart after a host reboot. The bot’s systemd sd_notify mechanism is not available inside Docker. [Freqtrade: Quickstart with Docker] [Freqtrade: Docker Compose restart guidance] |
Persist the user-data directory so configuration, logs, and the database survive container replacement or upgrades. Protect remote FreqUI access with an SSH tunnel or VPN. |
| Screen or tmux session | A simple Linux setup where you mainly need the bot to keep running after you log out. | Freqtrade’s installation guidance mentions terminal multiplexers to keep a session alive after logout. This is not equivalent to a supervised service that automatically restarts a failed process. [Freqtrade: Installation] | Keep user data in a location you can back up; use a protected remote-access method if you need the UI away from the host. |
For a native Linux install, use systemd if process supervision and the documented watchdog integration are priorities. Choose Docker Compose for containerized management and its host-reboot workflow, not to combine it with Freqtrade’s systemd watchdog notifications. If you only need a process to outlast logout, a multiplexer is simpler but provides less recovery.

Install Freqtrade using current instructions
Use Freqtrade’s current installation guide for the path that matches your host. The guide currently lists Python 3.11 or newer for the script/manual installation path; requirements can change, so check the live documentation rather than reusing an old command or environment. Freqtrade also warns that the host clock needs regular synchronization to avoid exchange communication problems.
Choose one deployment path—native Linux or Docker—and follow its corresponding official setup. Keep the bot’s user data, including configuration, logs, and database, on storage that persists across restarts and upgrades. For Docker, Freqtrade’s quickstart documents its image and Compose workflow, including where user data is stored.

Set up automatic recovery on Linux with systemd
Freqtrade’s advanced setup documents a systemd service example and the bot’s sd_notify keep-alive integration. Follow that current example for your installation, adjusting the working directory and command to match where you installed Freqtrade. Configure the documented internals.sd_notify setting or flag as directed, then enable and start the service using the instructions for your system.

- Use the official service example: Open Advanced Post-installation Tasks and adapt its unit configuration to your installation’s working directory and Freqtrade command.
- Enable the notification setting: Set the documented
internals.sd_notifyoption or flag so the bot sends the keep-alive messages systemd expects. - Enable and start the service: Use the service-management commands and unit naming shown in the current Freqtrade instructions. Confirm that the service is active and inspect its logs before relying on it.
- Keep a user service running after logout, if applicable: Freqtrade notes that a user-level service may require
loginctl enable-linger. Apply this only when using that service arrangement.
Systemd’s response depends on the service configuration and notification behavior. A running service does not mean the exchange is reachable or that orders are being handled correctly. Check service status and logs after a restart, and investigate the cause rather than treating repeated restarts as a fix.

Run the Docker service with Compose
For Freqtrade’s documented Docker route, use its official quickstart and start the trading service with docker compose up -d. The Compose workflow handles service startup and is documented to support restart after a host reboot. Keep the mapped user-data directory persistent so replacing or updating a container does not discard your configuration, logs, or database. Use Compose logs and the user-data directory when diagnosing problems.
Do not configure Freqtrade’s systemd sd_notify integration expecting it to monitor a bot inside Docker: Freqtrade explicitly says that integration does not work in a container. Docker’s own service and restart behavior is a different recovery mechanism.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Protect FreqUI when accessing it remotely
Do not expose FreqUI directly to the public internet. Freqtrade recommends using an SSH tunnel or VPN for remote access, and its Docker quickstart notes that the UI does not support HTTPS out of the box. Follow the current quickstart’s access guidance and keep the interface reachable only through a protected route.
Test safely before live trading
- Start in dry-run mode: Set
dry_run: Trueas directed by the installation guide, then confirm that the bot starts and operates as expected. - Backtest the strategy you intend to use: Review the results as a historical test, not a promise about future performance.
- Continue with dry-run before risking funds: Observe the bot’s behavior and review its logs and configuration before considering live trading.
- Do not treat the sample strategy as a recommendation: Freqtrade describes the bundled
SampleStrategyas a demo, not a ready-made profitable strategy.
A healthy process only shows that the software is running; it does not establish that a strategy will make money or that future exchange conditions will match a backtest.

What automatic restarts will not fix
- Power loss: A service manager cannot run a machine without power. After power returns, host startup configuration may bring the service or container back, but it cannot prevent the outage.
- Internet or exchange disruption: A restarted process cannot restore connectivity or make an exchange API available.
- Bad credentials or configuration: Repeated restarts will not correct invalid keys, permissions, or settings.
- Strategy behavior and financial risk: Watchdogs supervise software behavior, not the quality of trades or the risk of losses.
