You can stream from Raspberry Pi OS Lite to YouTube with FFmpeg by installing the encoder, choosing the right input command for your camera or video source, and sending an H.264 stream to the RTMPS destination shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The bitrate must fit both your Pi’s encoding capacity and the stable upload speed at the streaming location; there is no single profile that works for every Pi or Indian internet connection.
What you need before starting
- A Raspberry Pi running Raspberry Pi OS Lite, with SSH or local command-line access. Lite is the command-line-only version intended for headless setups. Raspberry Pi’s download information identifies its 64-bit Trixie-based release as dated 15 September 2026; check the current download page because OS releases change. Raspberry Pi OS downloads
- A video source: a Raspberry Pi camera, USB camera, network feed, or prerecorded file. Each requires a different input method.
- A reliable internet connection with sustained upload capacity for the chosen video bitrate, plus room for audio and network variation. Test from the Pi’s actual location and at the time you expect to stream; Wi-Fi, mobile uplinks, congestion, router placement, and service plans vary.
- A YouTube channel with access to the current Live Control Room settings for its stream destination and key.
Raspberry Pi OS Lite includes the lightweight rpicam-apps-lite camera applications. The exact FFmpeg version, encoder support, camera options, and YouTube account settings can vary, so inspect your installed system rather than assuming a particular build.

Install FFmpeg and check your build
- Update the package index and installed packages:
sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade. Reboot if the system requests it:sudo reboot. - Install FFmpeg:
sudo apt install ffmpeg. - Check the installed version and available encoders:
ffmpeg -versionandffmpeg -encoders. Look for the H.264 encoder you intend to use. Do not assume a specific hardware encoder is present; available support depends on the Pi model, OS packages, and build. - If using a Raspberry Pi camera, check the installed camera app:
rpicam-vid --help. Raspberry Pi documentsrpicam-vidas a camera capture tool that writes an encoded bitstream, and its FFmpeg/libav backend can encode audio and video. Its H.264 hardware-encoding availability depends on the platform. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Choose a YouTube streaming profile
YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe every two seconds (no more than four seconds apart). For audio it lists AAC or MP3; AAC is required for 5.1 surround sound over RTMP/RTMPS. YouTube says, “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” Use the current encoder settings guidance as the authority for your account and destination. | Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|

| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 360p30 | 3 Mbps |
Start with a modest resolution and frame rate your Pi can encode in real time and your uplink can sustain. Measure upload performance at the installation site rather than relying on a plan’s advertised maximum. Leave practical headroom for variation and audio. If YouTube’s stream-health feedback reports insufficient or unstable input, lower the bitrate or resolution and test again.
Get the YouTube destination and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the broadcast you intend to use.
- Copy the current ingest protocol and server URL shown for the broadcast, choosing RTMPS when available as YouTube recommends.
- Copy the stream key from the same screen. Treat it like a password: do not publish it in screenshots, public scripts, repositories, or shell history. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update your encoder.
- Use the current Control Room values in the commands below. YouTube’s labels and account eligibility can vary, so do not rely on a copied endpoint or key from another account.
Run FFmpeg with a prerecorded video file
For an already encoded file, passthrough can avoid re-encoding, but only if its codec, settings, timestamps, and container path are acceptable to YouTube. Inspect the file first:
ffprobe -hide_banner input.mp4
If the video and audio streams are compatible, a starting passthrough command is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/<STREAM_KEY>"

Replace the URL and key with the exact values from Live Control Room. -re paces a file input in real time; it is generally appropriate for prerecorded input, not a universal option for live capture. This example converts audio to AAC while copying video. If the file’s video is not compatible, or its timestamps or container cause problems, encode video instead. A general software-encoding starting point is:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune zerolatency -b:v 4M -minrate 4M -maxrate 4M -bufsize 8M -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0 -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/<STREAM_KEY>"
This illustrative profile assumes 30 frames per second: -g 60 sets a two-second GOP at 30 fps. If you choose another frame rate, set the GOP to approximately twice that frame rate to retain a two-second keyframe interval. The example’s 4 Mbps is a starting value, not a universal recommendation; use a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and the tested uplink. The libx264 encoder must appear in your local ffmpeg -encoders output.

On a Pi camera workflow, rpicam-vid handles capture. Its FFmpeg/libav output backend may be available in the installed app; confirm the exact options using rpicam-vid --help, since app builds and camera hardware differ. One possible pattern, where supported by the installed version, is to pipe H.264 camera output into FFmpeg for RTMPS delivery:

rpicam-vid -t 0 --inline -o - | ffmpeg -f h264 -i - -c:v copy -an -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/<STREAM_KEY>"
This example sends video only; it does not provide microphone or other audio input. Add a suitable audio source and encode it as AAC if the broadcast needs sound. Confirm available camera options locally, and verify that the captured H.264 profile, frame rate, keyframes, and timestamps meet YouTube’s current ingest requirements. If the stream has no audio, missing audio is not necessarily an FFmpeg failure.
Use a USB camera or network feed
USB camera
USB camera device names, capture formats, and FFmpeg input options depend on the device and installed drivers. On Linux, inspect available video devices and formats before composing a command; the camera may expose V4L2 rather than a ready-to-stream H.264 feed. If it supplies raw video, FFmpeg must encode it, and the Pi must be able to sustain that encoding workload. A generic V4L2 pattern is:

Replace the device, supported resolution, and frame rate with values the camera actually offers. This example omits audio; add and configure an audio input if needed. It also assumes libx264 is available. Treat 4 Mbps as an example to tune, not a claim about the best bitrate for all connections.
RTSP or another network feed
Use the source’s actual protocol URL and authentication requirements. If the network source already provides compatible H.264, passthrough may work; otherwise re-encode with an available encoder and tune the bitrate and GOP. Avoid putting credentials in a public script or shell history. Network feeds can have their own buffering and timestamp behavior, so test the complete route to YouTube rather than assuming a file or camera command applies unchanged.
Check performance and YouTube stream health
- Start with a private or unlisted test broadcast and realistic motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing before a live event using conditions similar to the planned stream.
- While FFmpeg runs, watch its output for encoding speed, dropped frames, and connection errors. On the Pi, also observe CPU use, temperature, and throttling behavior with tools available in your OS.
- In Live Control Room, monitor stream health and messages. If the input is unstable, reduce bitrate or video demands and test again; if encoding is falling behind, reduce resolution or frame rate, or investigate whether a suitable encoder is available.
- Test from the actual installation location and the time of day the stream will run. A speed test is only a snapshot, so allow margin for upload variation.
Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders. Raspberry Pi documentation says its --low-latency option reduces encoding latency, with slightly worse coding efficiency, potentially less efficient multicore use, and a possibly slightly reduced maximum frame rate; the same documentation says 1080p30 remains readily achievable in its documented context. That is not a performance guarantee for every FFmpeg pipeline or for other Pi models. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely checks and fixes |
|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a signal | Check that the ingest URL and key are current and copied correctly, the RTMPS endpoint is being used as intended, and the Pi has working internet access. Do not reuse a key or endpoint from an unrelated broadcast. |
| Stream health reports unstable or insufficient bitrate | Measure the sustained upload at the Pi’s location; lower the configured video bitrate or resolution and retest. A headline speed-test result or advertised plan speed does not establish sustained capacity. |
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder | Run ffmpeg -encoders and select an encoder actually present in that build, or install a package/build that supports the needed encoder. Do not assume a hardware H.264 encoder exists. |
| Video stutters, drops frames, or falls behind | Check FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed, CPU load, temperature, and throttling. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or encoding complexity; verify whether passthrough is possible for an already compatible source. |
| Video works but audio is missing | Check whether the selected source actually includes audio and whether the FFmpeg command maps or captures it. Add an audio input and encode to a YouTube-supported format such as AAC. |
| Camera command or options fail | Confirm camera detection and consult the installed rpicam-vid --help. Raspberry Pi camera application options and hardware support can differ by release and device. |
| File input runs too fast or live input behaves oddly | Use -re to pace a prerecorded file when appropriate. Live capture inputs normally have their own real-time pacing; applying file-oriented options indiscriminately can cause timing problems. |
Copyright and YouTube channel rules
Use only video and audio you own or are licensed to stream, and check the rights for music, footage, and other material before going live. A stream key does not grant content rights. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies can affect a broadcast or channel, including content that is reused; review the rules that apply to your channel and content in YouTube’s current guidance and Live Control Room before scheduling a long-running stream.
