YouTube’s stream key and ingest URL come from Live Control Room; FFmpeg can send the media in real time; and the Windows task must be configured and tested for the way your PC is used. The exact Task Scheduler settings depend on your Windows version and reboot, sign-in, and recovery requirements, so this guide covers the supported FFmpeg and YouTube setup without presenting unverified scheduler settings as official instructions.
What you need before scheduling FFmpeg
- A Windows PC that can stay powered on and connected to the internet. A task on that PC cannot keep running if the computer is off.
- A current FFmpeg build with support for the RTMP or RTMPS protocol you intend to use. This guide does not verify a particular Windows build; check the build you install.
- A YouTube Live encoder stream, its ingest URL, and its stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A video file and enough reliable upload capacity for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Get the actual RTMPS server URL from Live Control Room rather than copying an address from an old example. Create and configure the YouTube stream
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream.
- Reveal and copy the current server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a secret; do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs.
- Choose the video and audio settings FFmpeg will send. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use a bitrate appropriate to your codec, resolution, and frame rate, and to the upload capacity you can sustain. For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p at 30 fps at 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; for 720p at 30 fps, it lists 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube-published ranges, not a guarantee that your connection or encoder can maintain them.

Send a video file to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
FFmpeg’s documented command structure puts global options first, then input options and -i input, followed by output options and the output URL. For real-time delivery of a file, its protocol documentation shows the pattern -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream. Adapt that structure to your file and the current URL from YouTube Live Control Room; this is a command shape, not a verified, ready-to-run YouTube command.

Match the GOP to your actual frame rate: for example, a two-second interval at 60 fps is 120 frames. The example does not guarantee YouTube acceptance or stable delivery, and it does not configure every possible input, resolution, frame rate, codec, or audio format. Replace the placeholder URL with the exact ingest URL and key format YouTube provides for your stream; never publish the real key.
For an unattended background invocation, FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin so its normal console-input checks do not interfere. Add it among the global options near the beginning:

ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i "C:pathtovideo.mp4" ...FFmpeg also documents redirecting standard input to NUL on Windows as an alternative. Read the FFmpeg FAQ and FFmpeg protocol documentation. Confirm that your installed build supports your selected RTMP(S) protocol and test the command interactively before automating it.
Put the command in a script and schedule it
A practical approach is to save a tested command in a stable script or command file and configure Task Scheduler to launch that file. The exact scheduler choices are not established here: Windows version, whether the task must run after sign-out or reboot, credential storage, power settings, retry behavior, and handling of an already-running instance all affect the setup. Consult current Microsoft documentation for your Windows version before choosing those options.

- Save the tested FFmpeg invocation in a file at a path that will remain available to the task. Make sure the task’s account can read the media file and run the FFmpeg executable.
- In Task Scheduler, create a task that launches your script or command file according to your intended start condition. Choose the trigger and sign-in behavior based on the actual Windows version and whether the PC will be logged in; do not assume a particular option guarantees operation in every case.
- Set up any required credentials and power behavior in accordance with Microsoft’s current instructions and your security requirements. Do not place a real YouTube stream key in a public or shared script.
- Run the task manually from Task Scheduler and check that FFmpeg starts, YouTube receives the feed, and the Live Control Room preview and stream health show the expected video and audio.
- Test the behavior that matters for your use case—such as sign-out, restart, loss of network, or FFmpeg exit—before relying on the task. A scheduled launch is not itself proof of automatic recovery after every failure.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
YouTube recommends matching test motion and audio to the intended broadcast, choosing a quality your upload connection can reliably sustain, previewing the feed, and monitoring audio, video, and stream health. Start setup early and verify that the event is accessible through the channel and watch pages. YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder guidance
- Video: check for frozen frames, unexpected scaling, or an unsuitable frame rate.
- Audio: check that sound is present and does not clip or fall out of sync.
- Connection: watch stream health while the encoder sends the planned content; reduce the load if the available upload connection cannot sustain it.
- Task: confirm that the task launches the intended script and that FFmpeg’s output or logs are available for diagnosing failures.
What “24/7” means for a scheduled FFmpeg stream
Task Scheduler can start a local process, but it cannot make an offline PC, failed network connection, or stopped FFmpeg process continuously transmit. Recovery behavior must be tested and configured for the specific Windows setup rather than assumed.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a single encoder session can run indefinitely as one uninterrupted live event, or that a 24/7 stream will become one archive. Treat the lifetime of the broadcast and its archive as separate from whether FFmpeg is still running, and check YouTube’s current live-stream guidance for your event. YouTube: Archive live streams

- FFmpeg exits immediately: run the command interactively first. Check the input path, quoting, permissions, FFmpeg build, and whether the selected protocol is supported.
- YouTube does not receive a picture: verify that you selected the intended encoder stream, copied its current ingest URL and key correctly, and used an output format YouTube accepts. Check the Live Control Room preview and FFmpeg error output.
- The task runs but cannot find files: use stable, fully qualified paths and confirm the task’s account can access the media and FFmpeg executable. Test the task itself rather than only running the command in your own session.
- The stream stutters or drops: compare the chosen bitrate with reliable upload capacity and inspect YouTube stream health. YouTube’s bitrate figures are guidance, not a promise that your line can sustain them.
- Background FFmpeg behaves unexpectedly: include
-nostdin, as FFmpeg recommends for background tasks, or use its documented WindowsNULinput redirection alternative. - The stream key may have leaked: reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the command or script that uses it.
- The video ends or repeats unexpectedly: check the input and command behavior. The documented real-time file example establishes a way to send a file, not an indefinite looping configuration.
