For most residential networks, Cat 6 is a practical starting point; route it carefully, keep it separated from AC wiring as local rules require, and protect it from sharp bends, crushing, and fasteners. Check the selected cable’s own handling limits, and take extra care around concealed utilities and fire-rated walls or floors.
Plan the route before you drill
Start with a room-by-room sketch. Mark the devices that need wired connections, proposed outlet locations, and a central, accessible spot for your router, switch, or structured-wiring enclosure. Allow room for likely additions, then plan an individual home run from that distribution point to each outlet rather than chaining outlets together. Label both ends of every run and keep a wiring chart; Leviton’s residential networking guidance and Basic Residential Installer Guide recommend this structured approach.

When choosing an enclosure location, favor an accessible interior wall. Leviton identifies an uninsulated interior wall as useful, and cautions against placing an enclosure in a fire-rated wall unless a third-party solution maintains the assembly’s rating. Avoid locations immediately beside electrical panels or large appliances, and avoid exposed environmental extremes such as unprotected outside walls, attics, and garages.

Before drilling or cutting, inspect both sides of the proposed path. Account for wiring, plumbing, framing, fire blocks, and rated assemblies. There is no universal method in the cited guidance for identifying every concealed hazard. If you cannot establish what is behind a surface, or are unsure whether a wall or floor is rated, stop and get qualified local advice rather than drilling blindly.

Choose cable that fits the network and route
Leviton recommends Cat 6 for the vast majority of residential applications, describing it as suitable for gigabit, 2.5-gigabit, and many 5-gigabit use cases at residential distances. Cat 6A may make more sense for demanding endpoints, such as a home editing studio with high-bandwidth network-attached storage, or where extra performance margin is important. Leviton notes that dense bundles and high-noise environments can limit Cat 6 performance for 5GBASE-T compared with Cat 6A, while characterizing those conditions as rare in homes. These are manufacturer recommendations, not independent comparative test results.

Also compare the planned run length and environment, cable diameter and ease of routing, jacket/environment rating, conductor construction, bend radius, pulling limit, and compatibility with jacks and termination tools. A Cat 6 or Cat 6A label alone does not establish that a cable is suitable for every pathway.

Keep Ethernet away from electrical hazards
Ethernet is generally low voltage, but that does not make every route permissible or safe. Leviton’s installer guide says to drill independent holes for low-voltage cable and never share drill holes with AC wiring. Use a separate stud space where possible. If a crossing is unavoidable, the guide recommends crossing AC wiring at 90 degrees; for parallel runs it gives a 12-inch separation recommendation. Treat that distance as Leviton guidance for its installation context, not a universal code rule. Local electrical and building requirements, as well as the actual wiring method, control.

Do not route cable through electrical equipment, reuse holes intended for AC wiring, or drill framing in a way that could compromise it. Keep low-voltage cable away from hot-water pipes and heat ducts. Where conduit is used, leave a pull cord for future additions, and check applicable code and the pathway details for conduit fill rather than treating one guide’s recommendation as universal.

Pull cable without damaging it
Follow the documentation for the exact cable you bought. A Cat 6A specification from CommScope, for example, lists a minimum bend radius of four times the cable diameter and a maximum pulling tension of 25 pounds for that named product. Those values illustrate model-specific limits; they are not universal rules for all Cat 6 or Cat 6A cable.
- Pull gently and avoid kinks, sharp bends, and abrupt changes of direction. Leviton’s guide recommends less than 25 pounds of pull force in its context; the selected cable’s own limit takes precedence.
- Work around one bend at a time rather than forcing the cable through several turns at once.
- Use suitable low-voltage supports, secure bundles loosely, and do not crush the cable with tight ties or ordinary staples.
- Install nail plates where fasteners could reach cable concealed in framing.
- For long or complex routes, plan access and support points before pulling so the cable is not dragged across sharp edges or left hanging unsupported.
Protect rated assemblies and exterior routes
A cable penetration through a fire-rated wall or floor can affect the assembly. Do not assume a general residential wiring guide specifies a suitable fire-stopping method for every construction type. Leviton specifically warns that its structured-media enclosure should not be mounted in a fire-rated wall unless a third-party solution maintains that wall’s rating; that enclosure guidance does not prescribe how every cable penetration must be sealed. Check the assembly requirements and local rules, and use qualified help if the correct method is unclear.

Conceal cable where practical. If a visible or exterior route is unavoidable, use a supported, protected pathway such as appropriate conduit and cable products rated for the exposure. Leviton advises against exposed external cable where possible and recommends conduit for an external run. Do not assume ordinary indoor cable is suitable outdoors.
Terminate, label, and verify each run
Use jacks, outlets, and tools compatible with the cable and termination system. Leave enough service slack to make a clean termination without forcing the cable into a tight coil. Keep the labels at both ends legible and update the wiring chart as each run is completed.

- Check the wire map or continuity with an appropriate cable tester before closing access points.
- Correct any wiring fault while the route is still accessible, then record the completed run and outlet location.
Leviton’s guide recommends using tools intended for structured cabling and inspecting installations. No particular tester or termination technique is established as the right choice for every system, so follow the component manufacturer’s instructions.
