To check and repair protected Windows system files, run DISM first and then sfc /scannow from an administrator Command Prompt. SFC can replace certain corrupted protected files with cached copies; it is not a general fix for every Windows error or hardware problem.
Run DISM before SFC
Microsoft’s repair workflow for Windows 10 and Windows 11 uses DISM to prepare the repair source before System File Checker scans protected files. Sign in with an administrator account, and keep the Command Prompt open until each command finishes.

Open Start, type Command Prompt, then choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt if it appears.

At the elevated prompt, enter this command and press Enter:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for DISM to complete. It normally uses Windows Update to obtain the files needed for repair.

After DISM completes successfully, run:
sfc /scannow -
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100%, then read the final Windows Resource Protection message.
Microsoft says SFC scans protected system files and replaces corrupted ones with a cached copy. This applies to protected Windows files, not every application file, setting, or cause of system instability. See Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.

Understand the SFC result
The final message determines what to do next. A completed scan does not necessarily mean Windows found a problem or repaired one.

“Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.” SFC found no missing or corrupted protected system files. The issue you are troubleshooting may have another cause.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.” SFC reports that it repaired the detected files. Restart Windows if appropriate, then check whether the original symptom remains.

“Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.” Inspect the SFC records to identify what it could not repair before choosing a recovery step.

“Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.” Microsoft advises trying the scan in Safe Mode and checking that the

Find which files SFC could not repair
Microsoft records SFC details in %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log. To extract the System File Checker entries into a text file on your desktop, run this command from an elevated Command Prompt:
findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log >"%userprofile%Desktopsfcdetails.txt"Open sfcdetails.txt and compare the timestamps with the scan you just ran. The log can include records from earlier SFC runs, so do not assume every entry refers to the latest scan. Microsoft documents the log and extraction steps in its SFC troubleshooting guidance.
If files remain unrepaired, use the log to identify the issue and follow Microsoft’s recovery guidance. Avoid downloading replacement DLLs or other system files from unrelated websites: a file must match the Windows installation, and an arbitrary copy can introduce further problems.

If DISM cannot get repair files from Windows Update
When the Windows Update client is unavailable or broken, Microsoft documents using a suitable alternate Windows repair source, such as a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on network share or removable media. The source must be valid for the Windows image being repaired.

Microsoft’s example is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccessReplace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to a suitable repair source; it is an example path, not a folder every PC has. The /Source option specifies where DISM should look for repair files, while /LimitAccess prevents DISM from using Windows Update. This is a conditional recovery route, not part of the ordinary SFC scan. See Microsoft’s documentation on repairing a Windows image.
Choose another SFC mode only for a specific need
sfc /scannow is the normal whole-system scan and repair command. Microsoft’s command reference also lists narrower options for targeted troubleshooting and offline recovery:

These commands have specific syntax and require administrator privileges. Consult Microsoft’s SFC command reference before using them, especially for offline repair.

SFC checks Windows-protected system files and can try to restore corrupted copies from the component store. DISM addresses Windows image and component-store repair and is placed first in Microsoft’s support workflow because it can provide files SFC needs.
Neither command is a universal troubleshooting tool. If the scan reports no integrity violations, or the original problem persists after repairs, investigate other possible causes rather than repeatedly treating SFC as a fix for unrelated faults.
